For realism, switch claymores to bouncing bettys!

First of all, yes I use claymores. Secondly, yes I hate claymore whores. This is the second most unrealistic element in BF2, aside from engineers repairing stuff from inside vehicles but I wont get into that.

    Here's how a claymore works...

BY THE WAY, I was a combat engineer in the 10th Mountain Division for 4 years and have actual combat experience, so dont bother arguing with me about my descriptions because you would already be wrong.

Anyway, a claymore doesn't just go off by itself. It has to have a blasting cap screwed into it with an electrical transmission line running to a handheld "clacker". You depress the handle on the clacker, it creates electricity that sets off the cap and detonates the mine. This practice of dropping claymores wherever and running off to the other side of the map is so ridiculous!

Not only that, but claymores are a bunch of steel ball bearings stuck to about 2 1/2 pounds of C4 encased in a plastic sheath... THEY DONT JUST KILL THE GUY TWO FEET AWAY FROM THEM. The actual kill radious is supposedly classified but it's a helluva lot more than two feet.

Anyway, the point of my rant is this: Who's ever heard of the BOUNCING BETTY? Pretty much anybody who's ever watched a war movie, right? Well, guess what? IRL they have almost all the characteristics of a BF2 claymore. They have pressure prongs for stepping on them, but are also tilt-activated so you can rig them with tripwires as well to cover a larger area.

I think replacing the Claymore with the Bouncing Betty would pretty much silence the discussion about them BECAUSE AT LEAST IT WOULD BE HALF-ASS REALISTIC. And not only that... but think of the kick-ass animation of a Betty popping out of the ground to about waist level and blowing a dude apart? :p

It's cool turkey. Your welcome. I went into the Army in the summer of 01... thinking I was going to play wargames in the woods for a few years and then snag 50 grand for college... then 9-11 happened while I was in Basic Training

Now I happily install phone systems.... BORING

          From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claymore_mine):

Uncontrolled Mode (also known as Victim Initiated Detonation) - Uncontrolled firing is accomplished when the mine is installed in such a manner as to cause an unsuspecting enemy to detonate the mine. Mines employed in this manner must be reported and recorded as land mines. There are many fuzing mechanisms that can be used to initiate the M18A1 in uncontrolled mode, including the M142 Multipurpose Firing Device, M5 Pressure Release Device (mousetrap), tripwires, strikers, infrared sensors, acoustic & vibration sensors.

The reason the military doesn't use Bettys anymore is because all anti-personel land mines have been banned (at least by the United States and other "civilized nations"). Too many children stepping on them. The claymore is not actually a mine because, like I said, it doesn't go off by itself. It's an "Emplaced Munition".

I <3 Bouncing Betties. Those things are evil.

Here's more info on the clays:

says the casualty radius is 100 meters :) and yes, I am a clay whore...not so much as a sniper whore though becuase you only get 2 and usually by the time I can get more, I'm already dead because support jockeys rarely drop me ammo bags.

Heh, I like to take a Sniper's kit after I kill him and just drop his Claymores wherever and then go back and pick up my original kit.

i think that bouncing bettys would own to much:) they sound like they can tare a tank apart not to munchen an entire sqaud. i may be wrong about their power, but they sound like hell.

Re: For realism, switch claymores to bouncing bettys!

Nah, not really. The Betty, like a lot of Anti-personell mines are really designed to wound and incapacitate as much as kill. The concept is that it demoralizes your buddies when you get your foot blown-off... and then two of them are taken out of the fight in order to carry you to safety.

Erm...No mines are banned by the US. They never signed the Geneva convention, or anything like it.

They can use whatever they want...

                        Bouncing Betties are cool though...

Hmm, OK, perhaps "banned" was impropper terminology. But the fact remains that United States and most, if not all of the members of NATO do not use AP mines anymore.

Furthermore, do you mean to say that the U.S. never signed the Geneva Convention Treaties? Is that why I had to study it endlessly before being shipped off to war? Do you even know why the Geneva Convention came about? Have you ever heard of the Hague Convention?

In my original post I said "dont bother arguing with me because you would allready be wrong" and yes, as I predicted, somebody came along feeling like they know it all because they have a cousin in the Rhode Island National Gurad or something like that who decided to argue. You are that person Living Ghost, and you are wrong. But thanks for irritating me and making me write this so I can stay up a little later and be tired at work tommorrow.

One more thing, without looking it up on wikipedia, do you even know what NATO stands for?

First off, if you want to argue realism, you're playing the wrong game. There's a whole laundry list of things unrealistic about BF2, the easiest of which is that I can undo a .50-cal bullet wound to the head with defibrilators.

Second, if you want to argue a trigger, you can hook a claymore up to practically anything, including vibration and infrared sensors.
