The Essex is about as useful as the RIBs.

PlaneWhore as stated above the essex's are as useful as ribs.
They never ever hit unless the j-10 has no flares where as team work form the 4 aa's (airfield beach and the 2 at north base) can easly take down the two f35 and the ah1z unless theres a skilled pilot who can manage 2 j-10s and 8 aa's that are pretty hard to avoid in a f35b.

An armored turret with eight rapid fire S2A missiles and a cannon that can shred a plane in under a second is useless? Even with a newbie in control of an Essex gun he can still at least wound an attacking J-10 and with the slow repairs on Chinese airfields it'll quickly add up. I'm not sure where you got the idea that those missiles suck though because in my experience (both getting shot at by them and shooting them myself) they seem to be just as effective as an IGLA.

PlaneWhore is correct in his assertion that the armored Essex turrets are superior to IGLA's. Even if one ignores the cannon, the missiles are relatively effective. What most people fail to do correctly is lead the target when firing the missiles similarly to leading a J10 when shooting from an F35B. If i'm in an Essex and a J10 ignores me on their first pass they are toast.

Conversely, PlaneWhore is ignorning the fact that good pilots can outrange the Essex with the machine guns. Because of this when I fly I think of a manned Essex as +1 kill +2 points. They aren't a real threat. Additionally, most pilots consider the Essex a priority target while many seem to ignore the IGLA's. Because they ignore the IGLA's they are typically more effective.

Lastly, overlapping the fire of the two Essex guns would eliminate carrier raping by a single plane--assuming both are manned and know how to lead a target. The Essex located higher up on the carrier is pretty useless as is when confronted with a competant pilot.

Re: Where have all the real aviators gone?

Every aspect of air and anti-air has its strengths...It's up to you to identify these so you can better exploit your enemies weakness. Everyone plays by the same set of rules in this game, so if you are the one complaining of spawn raping or some other aspect where your enemy has exploited your weakness, I have one thing to say, ADAPT AND OVERCOME!!! If you are being spawn raped, spawn somewhere else, if your down to onen last flag, well...sorry but you put yourself in a bad situation and you deserve the beat down you are more than likely going to recieve.

Try to spawn rape the carrier and I will shred you with the phalanx, hell, if there is an IGLA I will at least get one hit on you if you fly too low every time keeping you away long enough repairing for our pilots to get up. Not becaue I'm some uber pilot or AA gunner, but because I took the time to figure out when they hit when they dont hit.

On another note I just want to say, I consider myself a decent pilot, and the one thing I notice that really contributes to my success in the air is I almost always spot my enemy first, I dont focus on ground or helos while there is an enemy jet in the air, I love it when other pilots do this, this is when you sneak up on them with guns and if need be finish them with two missles.

before they nerfed the **** out of everything. back when you had to actually line your jet up properly to get a good lock with the missiles that would land a solid hit and you had to use your guns for sneaking up on people with the radar off.

Not only did they make it easier for everyone, they made it even easier for the pilots that already knew what they were doing pre1.2. Being that easy = boring.

I haven't fired this game up in about half a year because it got to be just that, boring.

I'm not ignoring these facts but rather taking them in to account. Lets assume for a moment you have a pilot such as myself attacking the Essex guns. I approach from odd angles, from an AoA that is impossible for them to fire back or any number of other methods in destroying the cannons.

This has two ultimate results: the first being that I waste time killing these cannons. Every single time I approach the Essex to rape I first have to destroy these cannons with a very fast respawn. This takes an entire pass cycle and sometimes has to be repeated twice and leaves me with very little time inbetween for Essex rape before the first gun respawns. I have to destroy these cannons every pass empty or not because unlike the IGLA I don't recieve a targeting box telling me if it is manned or not. This is a LOT of time wasted in a jet over the course of a round.

Secondly the vast.. vast majority of pilots are fodder to a reasonably skilled player in the Essex gun. Measuring the impact of the Essex gun has on a pilot is best done on your average aviator rather than those at the top of the food chain.

When speaking purely for the average pilot the Essex presents a much more challenging target than an IGLA ever would simply because where a single bullet would suffice in killing an IGLA it takes quite a few fairly accurate rounds to down the Essex gun and is made even more difficult when you're in the crosshairs of said Essex gun.

I didn't really get into the jets until the last few patches, but I still have a lot of fun. I only fly on wake and usually only when I can get an f35. I just love taking out those j10s.

When I do get in the j10, I usually end up landing on the carrier, letting my squadmate spawn, then taking off again, running over all the people waiting for the chopper.

I LOVE the essex.. that thing is awesome.

The chaingun is where the real power comes in... Most missles miss... that is why I use the cannon mainly.. people don't realise there is a ton of bullet drop and you need to lead the target ALOT...

The only problem I have with it, is the other retards on your team...

You know the starting position of the Essex? I put it there then jump out, and stand far enough away so if it blows up I won't die. I look around outside the essex so the other jets don't see it moving which = empty... your average J-10 pilot WILL do that.

So basically, once the J-10 is at a point of no return (When even if he does see me, he has 0 time to try to kill me), I hop in, get the cannons spinning, and then he is toast...

Re: Where have all the real aviators gone?

metal guitarist try this, if the jet is approaching and you are still in the phalanx, fire off two missles as he flies toward you. Your not so much trying to hit him so much as making him drop flares. If you dont chain gun him down on his approach, now just start spamming the missles, and lead him a bit, they will take down any jet. if he doesnt drop flares at the approach at least one of the 2 missles will hit letting you use guns to finish, either way you win and he loses.

I will however say the second phalanx close to the bridge, is very effective for surprising about 99 percent of most carrier raping pilots. Personally I like to stay just out of range of that phalanx and shoot down everything that tries to cross the water, helos, boats, jets it's much more effective, I find, in keeping their air assets supressed.

bombing neutral flags and shooting down attack helos, am I the only one who uses the time inbetween the enemy jet spawning to do this? I get so frustrated watching freindly pilots flying around like chickens with their heads cut off, just bombing anything that moves while the enemy air assets have free reign. Just IMHO.

Try this dont use missiles at all. I was playing kubra and went 68-0 in the mig simpley because of changing views and sneaking up behind the f-18 while it was on a bombing run.
I never ever go on a bombing run now unless i have downed the f-18 its so funny to see the hack accusations of noobs saying wtf.
