Is there anyway to make a macro that I assign to a keyboard key?

If I have my "E" key set as use, and i walk over by where a tank would respawn and push the e key as fast as I can waiting for that tank, is it cheating?
Holding down the E key works much better.
If I go into the nostromo software and make a macro that does the exact same thing, with the exact same timings, and set it such that when i hold down a key, it simulates me pushing e, that is cheating?
You couldn't possibly refine that action any more than is already in the game. Pressing E fast reduces your chance of getting the vehicle.
No. Here is why its not cheating: Because I could accomplish the same, exact thing without the macro. With or without the macro, the absolute exact same result can be reached, in the exact same amount of time.
Aside from the poor example, let's look at this a different way. Say I wrote a macro that allowed me to dolphin dive repeatedly and flawlessly for as long as I hold the key down (or for 10 seconds on a single press). Is that cheating? I mean, you could do the same thing with out the macro, right?

Wrong. As a humanbeing (I'm making an assumption here), you are prone to making mistakes. It's easy to flub up the keypresses required to preform the action. Wrose, while you're busy DDing, it distracts you from aiming. It gives you an advantage that someone without the macro wouldn't have. I'd call that a cheat. So would any rational gamer.

This is where you start to talk about something you dont understand, and consiquently, sound foolish. A macro written in VB could be considered an app of sorts, but then its not a macro, its an app. The macros we are talking about are not "code", and to call them an app is a huge streach.
A macro is a string of commands that are executed by the computer. An application is a string of commands that are executed by the computer. A macro is an application. To be more precise about it (since you seem to be found of splitting hairs), macros are simple nested applications (they rely on another application to execute them. Oh yeah... that's right, they require an application to execute them. As in a thrid party application. Jeez, I guess even without the semantic BS of what a macro is, you've still got no ground to stand on.
EA is not God, and in this case, you can recite any rule you please, but that doesnt mean the rule is right. Infact, i would be willing to bet that atleast 1 developer at EA has and uses a speedpad or similar device.
And thus you prove you are either a child or are childish. EA owns BF2. You have a license to their product. You do NOT own it. If they had stated in the EULA that you had to wear fluffy pink bunny slippers while playing the game, you'd be legally bound to it.
Is it cheating for me to have very nice sound surround sound system setup that gives me an advantage of being able to hear whats going on behind me, to my left, and to my right? How about a better video card that gives me a framerate advantage?
      Strawman much?
      Look it up.
C'mon, get a clue, its not cheating . If you personally dont like them, thats fine, done use them. No harm done there. Its your opinion, and you are fully entitled to it.
I'm not getting into "my opinion" here at all. I'm looking at facts. EA has specificly stated that using 3rd party apps (inclusive of macros) to cheat is a no no. You can argue all you like, but that won't change how stupid you are making yourself sound by debating a FACT.

What can be debated is what constitutes "A Cheat". That's the grey area here. The standard definition of a cheat is anything that that is outside the game or requires alteration of gamecode to gain an advantage over other players.

Is it a cheat to duplicate a WADS interface to your Nostromo?
No. It's a set of keys that is being used as intended.

Is it a cheat to program your Nostromo to auto-dolphin dive?
Yes, because a human being could not possibly preform at the same level as the macro would allow.

The bottom line is that if you rely on code to do something for you in-game that you can't do as well as as reliably without it, you're cheating. Dress it up any way you like, the fact remains a fact.

That said, there's instances where the "cheat" is so minor that no-one is going to care. I got a PM from someone here asking if I thought using a macro to switch to grenades, toss a 'nade, then switch back to their main weapon is "cheating". I replied by saying "Yes, but I wouldn't worry about it. That's so damned minor, no one is going to care.". If I see that player bragging about his uber-l33t 'nade tossing, I'm gonna rag on 'im tho.

This is a very longwinded way of saying: "STFU noob".

Yeah, but the thing I am asking to do, is just moving one action on one key, to the same action, but just another key.

Its just like changing my parachute key from 9 to backspace...

Yeah, I know. Not raggin on ya fer it.
Your request could be viewed as cheesy or cheap by some folks, but I don't think it could be called a cheat.

Hmm. It is changing a game file in a way not supported by the engine (you can't assign a mouse wheel roll to fire from the in-game functions), so it sounds a little grey ta me. I wouldn't personally care and wouldn't presume to judge that case.

Well, regardless. You clearly feel that using a macro isnt cheating. Using it to accomplish something in the game that you couldnt normally do (DD constantly) is. I agree.

If someone wants to create a macro that DD's and shoots, and does all sorts of other cheap tactics, thats upto them. By design, its not made to cheat. I would assume an admin would spot someone using a "cheating" style macro real quick and put an end to it just as fast.

Like you said, its a grey area. Im going to stick to my "not cheating" point of view, and politely disagree with you and EA's rules.

If you can't do dolphin diving with normal key presses, your not going to be able to do it with a macro. It is just simulating key presses, or you could look at it as streamlining multiple key presses into one key press.

I really don't see it as a big deal unless someone is somehow managing to use it to do things that just literally impossible to do otherwise. If someone managed to make a macro that enables them to shoot 1300rpm instead of a hardcoded 300rpm in single shot mode, yah, that would be a big issue. But that won't happen because the server dictates how fast the next shot can be called on, it won't go any faster than 300rpm.

Personally, the only thing close to macros I had ever used were keybind scripts for Tactical Ops and UT. Most of those were/are so common knowledge that you can find them on their respective forums. Hell, TO actually had some of them in their readme.txt file for those that liked to make their keys a little more useful.

But, to each his own. I don't use them, but I don't see the issue with them either.

You guys could probably check on zdnet or tucows for macro tools though, two of the best places to look for freeware/shareware/etc things. Most of the ones I was browsing through on there (out of curiousity, whether you want to believe it or not is no big deal) are all time limited freeware. You'd be better off buying a Nostromo, it is half the price of some of those freeware programs if you want to keep it after it the free-ness expires and does the same thing they do also.

I found one for free called AutoHotkey. Although it isnt focused on macros, it has an ability to write a hotkey 'script'. As in, launch this prgram or press backspace or launch email with this messsage, etc. However, I do not know whether PB will ban you for something like this running in the background.

Well I can verify that PB won't ban you for using AutoHotkey, I had been using it for quiet a while, mainly for increasing the functionality of my joystick before I started using JoyToKey. I was using it make a one button spot and also for some time I was using it in conjunction with Voice Recognition software to issue Commo Rose commands by issuing voice commands and having AutoHotkey move and click the mouse for you on the Commo Rose, it was handy for when I was flying. PB doesn't have any issue with it. Nice piece of software but don't need it currently for anything.

Macros don't allow you to do anything outside of what pressing buttons on your own would do, it just automates the process. If it were to defeat the built in restrictions of the game (ROF, recoil, deviation etc), then there is a problem.

This is a pretty good discussion though.

I will admit that there are some grey areas for people who try to take things too far. But there are some grey areas in the wording of the ROE also, like 3rd party software, that could be anything from NVTweak to RivaTuner.

I think you missed my point.

DDing is possible now, but it requires 3 quick key strokes per dive. This is something you can do without a macro, but it's very easy to screw up in the heat of combat by mis-timing or just mashing the wrong key. Conversly, you can set up a macro that not only allows you to preform the action, but since it's so easy to do (hold down 1 key to continuosly DD) it lets you focus on aiming.

Suddenly making good shots while DDing is easy.
                            That's a cheat, IMO.

And yes... it really does work and makes a big difference. I set it up awhile ago just to see if I could. Nothing quite like being able to DD with a sniper rilfe and make mid-air shots from 200 meters or more. :hmm:

And the aiming deviation incurred from moving around was negated by doing this and you were able to hit someone from 200+ meters? Although, I do think that looping moves like that could be a bit shady, but alot of what people want to use them for are a bit on the harmless side, like a one click spot button.

                                For Nostromo users:

                                New macro:
                                q press
