What do you mean by "Basically" when you say it can basically play any game out there. Do you have any problems with any games, or did you say that because you can't guarantee it'll play upcoming games. Also, what res are you running at?
1600X1200 minimum for most games. I play HL2 on 1900X1250 (or something close to that) at highest settings and it is stunning without any fps stutter.
The only game I've seen that makes my system stutter sometimes is FEAR. Last night I was playing Call of Duty too at highest res and settings and got some temperature related tearing after playing for an hour or so. Probably time to blow out the dust bunnies.
For BF2, I follow most of the video settings guidelines from TweakGuides. I did some testing the other day with seeing what differences were visible by playing around with settings and also monitoring fps. Turns out that the TweakGuides guidelines were pretty good. There are some settings that you can see zero (human eye visible) difference between medium and high, so it isn't worth the fps loss to run at high. The setting that definitely makes a difference between medium and high is textures. I didn't keep the screenshots but it was easy to tell the difference. If I can't see a meaningful difference between medium and high on a setting, I'll just run medium. When I'm running and gunning I don't stop to admire the graphical beauty. I just want solid fps.
I say basically because you never know exactly what technology change will pop up in that time frame. Take DX 10. That will likely be the thing that makes me build my next rig.
for the time being im going to make do with my X850XT... Perfectly good for BF2 or anything else I might play....
I think I'll buy one of the first DX10 cards IF there might be any around in 2007. If not then I'll go 7900 GT or X1900XT.
That's pretty much my strategy. Stick with a rig until a must play game comes out that you can't play. BF2 is the reason why I built my lastest rig. My old box had a GeForce TI4600 and it wasn't on the list of supported cards. Made my decision really easy.
I just ordered my BFG 7900GTX OC from NewEgg! I simply couldn't resist after seeing the Leadtek 7900GTX go OUT OF STOCK already! But hey, I got mine, and it will be here tomorrow [Friday]! Finally I can kick this lump of steaming crap EN7800GT Dual out the window!! w00t!
Post your 3DMark scores when you get this bad boy in. I'd like to see what it'll do.

this makes me feel good about my x1900xt purchase last month. i was actually hoping to see the 7900gtx smash my card, but that is not the case. i guess we shall have to wait to see true next gen cards come out at the end of the year.

Within 90 days of buying they allow up to upgrade to the latest card for the cost difference. (something along those lines) Basically anyone who bought a 7800GTX in the last 2+ months can get a 7900GTX etc..
