Sorry, misread. I read it as "if anyone wants dibs on it BEFORE I REPLACE IT". Just a miunderstanding on my part since I've been fretting over this all day =P

Anyway, it's done. I also paid for overnight delivery (which means it'll be here thursday) because I absolutely want it here for a weekend project, and it was only $20 more than standard shipping (which still might have made it here in time, but probably not). Sounds like a waste, but it's basically like paying $20 to ensure a fun weekend. Well... hppefully it'll be fun heh.

That's that. Thread is effectively closed. Well, discuss if you want, but I don't see the point anymore.

I'll probably delay liquid cooling by 4 weeks. I have to be good and pay back my savings account to protect myself with my home equity loans, and rent's due on the 18th. Doing my taxes this weekend though, and just got my Best Buy check in the mail (returned an Insignia portable dvd player that squished and stretched movies improperly) so really the only thing holding me to that 4 weeks is a "calm down" period after this fairly major swap. I just wish the damn board wasn't green. But if it works, it can turn hot pink with daisys on it for all I care.

Yeah it's best to wait and get everything working before you add the liquid cooling in, it can be a bitch to pull in and out if a component turns out to be bad.

Don't worry about selling the old ati card, I believe that they are getting kinda valuable.

Don't worry about selling the old ati card, I believe that they are getting kinda valuable.

Definitely, in a few months, the card will sell for $400 easily. There's lots of people out there who would gladly pay that much in order to keep their AGP system going. I'm hesistant to sell my board because Directx 10 boards will be coming out soon and if I sell now, I won't have a good video card.

Finally got everything installed and although I've only jumped into single player for a few minutes, I can say without a doubt that this combo surpasses my old combo by a hundred fold. After a couple of hours trying to get windows on an SATA drive, everythings gone pretty smoothly since then. Plus, the combo looks a lot better than I thought it would. I am PSYCHED. Very glad I went this route. I'm not sure if it was getting a new mobo, or going to pci-e, or switching to nVidia, but it looks like I may have finally found the light at the end of the tunnel.

Interesting note though: there are only two options for anti-aliasing inside BF2. Weird.

Looking at the manual for my PCI-E vid card it says I need either a AGP or PCI-E slot. Which leads me to beleive that it's backwards compatible. I have it installed in a PCI-E though so don't know for sure if it will work in an AGP slot.

If you find a PCI-E card you like, maybe going to that manufacturers site, downloading the manual or looking at their FAQ's, etc. might help seeing if it will actually work for you in an AGP slot.

I am in HEAVEN. Every test I throw at it passes unbelievably. At stock speeds (including cpu) and air cooling, I gained 300 points on 3dmark05 at 7069. I can actually play Special Forces now. When I turn left and right, it's fluid and clean, not stuttery. No lag at all, not even when BF2 starts up (used to stutter for a few seconds during a new round). FEAR maxed out completely at 1280x1024 (or is it 960 or something like that?) actually hit the 120fps mark, though was usually around 45-50. COD2 maxed out ran a little low at like mid thirties but considering all the other peformance I've been getting this past hour, I certinally can't argue. Anyway, even when I have low fps the game runs smoothly. If it wasn't for FRAPs I'd think I was still in the mid fourties at least.

Heaven heaven heaven. I couldn't ask for anything more right now. I'll play around with overclocking my cpu this weekend (probably will leave the card alone for now since it's playing nearly every game fine).

Thank god I couldn't find an AGP mobo! We might pop this (the ati) in my friends gf's computer (dunno why we didn't think of it before to see how it runs. It's only got a gig of ram, but it's quality ram, and it's running a 3000+ AMD so that's not too bad. But I love my new computer and am so happy that I can finally make it BETTER instead of trying to FIX IT. Thank you lil_jimmy_norton and everyone else who pressured me into the changover.

edit: oh yeah, and I now have a 25 second boot. I just timed it. 25 seconds for my desktop to appear, and just under 30 until everything's loaded. It used to take 48 seconds for my desktop to even appear, and over 60 until I could do anything.

I'm guessing windows XP didnt have drivers for your SATA controllers and you had to make a disk with the drivers on it during the XP install.

That can be a real pain in the buttcheek if youve never had to do it before.

No, it wasn't that. The mobo came with a SATA disk for that. The problem was that until Windows was entirely installed, it couldn't boot to it. But half of installing windows is after you boot to that drive. With an IDE drive in slave position, it still refused to boot to SATA. Unplugging it fixed the problem, and I've been able to plug it back in without any troubles. I now have a 25 second boot to desktop from a cold sit. Literally, I timed it.

The only way that would mess up the boot is if your BIOS had been set to boot from the slave disk from the start.

Otherwise the IDE chanel shouldnt factor into the boot at all.

Maybe its just one of those random windows gremlins.

I got tired of loading SATA drivers all the time, so i use a program called Nlite to add in all the service packs, hotfixes, and drivers (along with the SATA ones) for my needs, and create an unattend install all packed into an ISO, then burn it and voila......custom Windows Install disc that fits my personal needs.

PCI-E and AGP are absolutly not backwards compatible.
