i wonder if this guy's FPS increased a well? as i am planning to buy 1 more GB of RAM (2 x 512) this week.

My FPS didnt increase because I was playin medium-low, but now I get the same FPS as I did when I was playin on low-med with 1gb ram with everthing on high.4x AA. Sickness!!!!! By the way Ive got 4x 512mb ram.

first off, lay off the darksniper dude. he has a good point, i often run mine smooth with every on high, anti aliasing and all that, and i only have one 6600 GT OC and 1 gig of ram, and a 2.6 hyperthreaded Pentium 4 to boot.

however, i think you need 1.5 gigs to run HIGH textures. to run MEDIUM textures 1 gig is sufficient, but 1.25 is better.

also, 2 gigs will run EVERYthing on higher resolutions and high textures, whereas 1 definitely will not smoothly.

however, 1 is MORE than enough for most CASUAL USERS! ie, who just want to run it on all high with textures on medium or low for performance.

Everyone that has gone from 1GB to 2GB have all said the samething, the lag disappeared. Period. No arguement.

Add another to that list of people. :rock:

I have an Athlon FX-53 and 6800 Ultra, so I already had everything on HIGH and 4x AA at 1280x1024, but lag was definitely an annoyance. Beginning round lag (when textures were being cached I guess) was always present, and some maps were pretty unplayable all round long, like that Oilfield map for instance. (Also, SF maps were lag city.)

Friday, I upgraded from 1 GB to 2 GB, and all I can say is, "Wow!" I've been playing since Friday night, and all lag has disappeared completely! That oilfield map runs smooth as silk now, and so far, I have yet to see any of that infamous SF lag (which, as I stated, I was getting before with my 1 GB setup).

So to recap, from June '05 to January '06, lag was there in abundance with 1 GB of RAM, and from Friday until now, lag has completely vanished after my upgrade to 2 GB. I'll let you guys form your own conclusions.

We are talking ALL high settings with AA and AF at a high resolution. For that 1Gb is not sufficient which is what this conversation is about.

The boxes I did were mainly for games only. The clients usually have other setups for work, laptops and such. I recommend a good router instead of good anti-virus software for a gamingstation. And do an online virus-scan every day (Java based, which frees up the memory when it's done). So there may be like 5-10 games on 1 pc and 20-50 movies. But other than that it's a clean machine in most cases. Just for gaming. XP pro takes up 100 MB of the Mem when everything is checked and reaches a final install. I'm talking about Ultra High settings and AA and AF enabled.

Btw, I used to run on ultra high settings 2xAA with a mere 660GT AGP 128 MB, with a AMD64 3200+ and 1 GB of mem at 1280*960 with great fps. That is how I got started tuning peoples boxes at work and such.

i make pc part time but i recently had the problem of stutter with high gfx settings on a similar machine amd64 3000 with a 6600 256card and 1.5gig ddr400(1x1gig1x512)
no way can i get it to run on ultrahigh with anykind of AA.but 2gb smothed it out and it loads faster and can have a few things on high but no aa<i recomended a fater card in the future.
if you could give me a run down on how you achived this i would aprriciate it.at the time could only get 60fps on medim settings.
i may not of understood it correctly but are youre custom rig made from new parts or do customers bring in there old systems for upgrade/tuning like i do.

i thought i was preety good a getting the best out of a pc but you are in a differnt league to me<-- no disraspect intended->

i belive if darksniper has the ablitly to make rigs run with ultrahigh with AA on lower systems,i think we should ask kindly to his secret recipe.
and pray he shares it with us all.
i for one really want to no how he does it.:)

thats what i thought.
but i just wonderd what darsniper does that i dont and get unbalivable results.
just wanted to try it the exact same way he did with a 6600 and 1gig of ram to see what results i get.
tba i dont think its possible with out 2gb but im willing to give his way of doing it one try to make sure for myself.

Well, people, I don't have magic hands and probably work with the same equipment you guys have in your pc. You all stated that you are more happy now. So, there is no problem there. Only in my experience I haven't needed more than 1 GB. I do notice faster loading times with the increased ram, but that is it. Try setting it up correctly, make a games only pc, invest in a good 256 MB or 512MB GFX card, 6600GT series / X800GTO or above, 1 GB of ram. Try my setup and see if it works. If it doesn't work. Try out more ram, but for 100 pc's I did. 1 GB was enough to play on high or ultra high settings.

i upgraded from 512 to 1024, and while my 6600 GT OC ran everything medium on vanilla smoothly before, aftre the 1.12 patch and especially in SF maps the 1 gig does excellently, obviously with textures not at high.

its simply a fact that 1.7 gigs of ram are used by the game on 1600 by 1200 with high textures and high everything else.

people can either have 1768 of ram that will most likely run it smoothly, or 2 gigs to run their operating system and make sure it doesnt go to the pagefile.

if you have a super comp, its a no brainer to buy the extra ram, why have a 7800 GT with 1 gig??

if you dont have a super comp, simply run textures at medium or low for really nice performance.

i play my textures on low on a projector, and went to a friends house who has a 5000 dollar computer (AMD 64 4800 dual core, 7800 GTX, 2 gigs, all the other fancy stuff, i know it shouldnt cost 5000 bucks but it somehow did heh) and played it on all high settings.

the amount of graphical difference in my eyes? absolutely none. despite the super high resolution and textures relative to mine, i noticed absolutely 0 difference in looks or even smoothness!

in fact, the only thing in all of SF that i noticed the resolutio and textures on were the kits that are left after a guy dies. i was like "whoa! look how crisp, high res and nicely textured they are"!

unfortunately, the rest of the game looked no different from mine. it confirmed that there is no reason to spend thousands upon thousands for this game, when spending a few hundred for a new card will make it look almost identical.

of course, for those who have money to burn, might as well buy the hardware and get rid of lag. but youll still get the glitches and bugs, so im my mind and most peoples its not worth it.

one thing i do notice is anti aliasing, or rather the lack of it. i turn off anti aliasing and the following happens:

everything looks really jaggy and sloppy
it is NO better in smoothness
you dont notice how good the game looks ,all you notice are jaggies

funnily enough, these jaggies disappear at 2x, which any powerful card can do with no loss in speed.

When I had 1 gig I still played the game on all HIGH settings...but it took 3 minutes to load the map...and once in the map, I had to traverse the entire map before the HD would stop blinking.

Then, halfway through the map I would 99% of the time get a 10 second total freeze with looping sounds...then recovery and smoothness as the others have mentioned.

Smoothness only after the entire ordeal decribed above. Constant HD thrashing, freezes every round.

Lowering Textures to Medium solved much of this, once again as mentooned by the others...but again as mentiopned by the other others...we are talking and have been talking about ALL HIGH settings, not a mix and match, and maximum AA, not 2x or 4x.

All HIGH, max AA requires 2 gigs for smoothness WITHOUT constant loading and freezing...PERIOD.

The guy asking if 1.5 is enough? It's certainly better than just one, but still a few hundred shy of PERFECTION. 2 gigs is perfection.

Also note that many many of those with 2 gigs, have AMD64's with dual channel capabilities. A 1.5 gig option doesn't allow the use of dual channels, therefore in our needs, 2x1024 or 4x512 are the only options for us.

Look buddy, a lot of us here actually made our PCs JUST FOR GAMING like you say you make yours. Some of us even make ours just for BF2, so we know what we're talking about. Yes 2GB gives you faster loading times but in addition it lets BF2 run faster do to more space for it to use memory. Look at my PC: X800XL and 1GB RAM. Now according to you I should be running high or ultra-high settings with absolutely no lag. Well guess what, I'm not. I'm running medium-high without lag. Others who have the same card I do and have an extra gig of RAM said they are running Ultra-High, everything as high as possible, 1280X1024 @ 75Hz without lag. I have tried this with my rig with 1GB and my loading times were so slow and I was lagging in-game so much that I could hardly move at times. Do you know why? I didn't have that extra gig that's why. If you look around the forum, there are TONS of threads about how people are doing so much better with 2GB of RAM from 1GB. And just look at this topic too, almost everyone here seems to disagree with you. I'm sorry but you are wrong.
