I disagree, 1 GB is more than enough. If you bought a better GFX card, you would have run it on HIGH 100fps at 1600*1200. But I understand that you have a certain setup, dropping some small cash and getting a performance increase is nice. But the game uses maximum of 1150 MB, maxed out. Personally, have tuned alot of boxes pure for BF2, I wouldn't suggest such an upgrade. I would suggest to go from 512 to 1024. Your loading will be faster and maybe your mind plays little tricks on you. Benchmark the fps yourself. You'll see no big difference.

I disagree. I had 1gb and it was very jerky and laggy. Now with 2gbs it runs smoothly.

But I manage to get the game running perfect on every system I tried it on. Even really old systems, like the one I did for my kid brother.

It has alot to do with tuning. I respect your opinion, Ben. I haven't seen any real performance increase to suggest it to my clients if they are on a tight budget. But I manage to get the game running perfect on every system I tried it on. Even really old systems, like the one I did for my kid brother.

What exactly do you mean by tuning? How about being more specific. Did you bother to read the link I posted yet? It's very a good read for those interested in the mechanics of BF2 and RAM.

Selecting components which hook up perfectly within the clients budget.

- when everything is new, a clean install with the best tested drivers for each of the components, test out different driver setups and see if there are any perfomance increases with different drivers. I swear by Nvidia and the G-Xtreme drivers of www.tweaksrus.com for the GFX component.

- exsisting system, do a low-level format of your system, use Killdisk (full program), install all best tested drivers and the G-xtreme ones. And test differenr setups.

- Get at least a vidcard with a base of an 256 MB, starting at a 6600GT or X800GT

- 1 GB of memory, depending, if the client insists, put 2 GB in

That is about it. And I manage to get excellent performance. I don't know how you all are complaining BF 2 it's performance. Just buy a good gfx card, and depending on the gfx quality rise the bar for the cpu. But I really don't understand all those faulty setups, because I haven't had those with all the boxes I looked at.

I'm surprised your "tuning" doesn't include them keeping their startup items clean. This is the main thing that you need to do to prevent BF2 from using all your memory.

The boxes I did were mainly for games only. The clients usually have other setups for work, laptops and such. I recommend a good router instead of good anti-virus software for a gamingstation. And do an online virus-scan every day (Java based, which frees up the memory when it's done). So there may be like 5-10 games on 1 pc and 20-50 movies. But other than that it's a clean machine in most cases. Just for gaming. XP pro takes up 100 MB of the Mem when everything is checked and reaches a final install. I'm talking about Ultra High settings and AA and AF enabled.

Btw, I used to run on ultra high settings 2xAA with a mere 660GT AGP 128 MB, with a AMD64 3200+ and 1 GB of mem at 1280*960 with great fps. That is how I got started tuning peoples boxes at work and such.

Dude, I just addressed this on another Forum so I'm not going to make this long. BF2 uses up a lot of memory. MORE than 1GB on High settings, just by itself. Then there are the other programs like the OS and the other 20 programs that you need to run your PC. That comes out to A LOT over 1GB.

If there isn't enough RAM, then the processor has to continously access the Hard Drive. THAT leads to performance fluctuations, most noticeable in FPS fluctuations. As if that wasn't enough, the memory isn't human. It can't work twice as hard. It is what it is, and if thats not enough then you have another problem, performance loss.

I don't really care who you are. If you don't get the basics of how a PC works, you shouldn't be selling people PCs.

Your tuning tips were BS, btw.

a q's i have ..............
if 1gb is enough why does a game like doom state when u put it on ultrahigh quality do this(a box pop up saying u need 512 of free memory to use this setting)thats 512 unused memory not including the memory the game and op is already using.
i tryed it on 1gb and it was slow.tryed it with 1.5gb and it was better.
i also make custom rigs but not for a big company.
i curently use 1280 for bf2 and i get a small amount of stutter in big action parts of the game.
but i tested a amd 3000 with a standard 6600(not gt)and the diffence from 1gb to 2gb was pretty impressive.overall smothness didnt see any drop in fps(i.e more than 10)
if bf2 uses 1150 max as some say then thats just for bf2 add windows and desktop and ohter apps that use memory it all adds up so in my opinion 2gb is a safe option.even more so if u want everything on high.
but thats just my opinion.
the grafs were very intersting to,clearly shows what u mean when refering to memory lost and hardrive being acceses.

I've mentioned this before, BF2 uses significantly more ram than that. I have seen it use 1500-1750mb of ram...NOT counting the ram used to start your computer and the misc little things that go with it.

Certain maps in BF2 use more ram than others...also, I have noticed after playing several hours that the ram continues to sink...there is a memory leak in this game I think.

If you play BF2 for a while you'll notice it does slowly use up the full 1Gb or ram and then start using your page file. I'm sorry, but 1Gb isn't enough to play with no stuttering at high settings. Obviously if he noticed such a difference it did something.

I second this, If you do however have a really old graphics card and 1 gig of ram with lots of jerkyness, go for a graphics card, however if your graphics card isn't too bad and is up to par, another gig of ram will make a huge difference.

I don't care if you're Bill Gates, your "expertise" is wavering. There is no way to run max settings with AA and AF maxed on 1GB with no lag. I know because one of my sticks of RAM failed and even with 7800GTXs, I was getting very bad lag with 1GB on all high. Lowered the vid settings and was fine with 1GB. Everyone that has gone from 1GB to 2GB have all said the samething, the lag disappeared. Period. No arguement. 1GB is not enough. Plain and simple.
