Dell's have a horible reputaion for their hardrives failing. The dell's in my school always have bad HDs and my mom's dell has lost it's HD twice, but she had some warranty on it and got it replaced for free.

Are they Western Digital, Maxtor, Samsung or Seagate? Dell doesn't make their own HDs, they buy them from manufactures. In fact, all those companies don't even make them, they buy the disks from Toshiba and Hitachi.

BTW, the 2405 FPW 24" widescreen dell monitor kicks ass. The best monitor i have looked at, better than any Samsung or Viewsonic.

Running on a Dell 2.6ghz P4 right now.

I've had a Dell for 3+ years. The first year was hell...actually about 8 months. Blue screens, etc. They replaced it....with this upgraded one...about 2 years ago. They upgraded the CDR to a DVD-R. I kept my old 21" CRT Dell monitor...running it right now. Looks great and its very large :)

I also upgraded: video card to a 9600 Pro and 1gb ram about 1.5 years ago.

And 3 months ago I upgraded to a X800XT Video card and 2gb ram.

Working wonderfully. Dual monitor setup...2nd monitor...19" Samsung LCD for my BF2CC and TS.

I'll wait another year or so before making a full processor upgrade...but I'd have no qualms about buying a Dell again, even with my initial problems. Turns out it was bad RAM that did it the first time.

By the way....my Dell Hard-drive has never failed.

Hey I use Dell laptop for playing BF2. Mine is a 1.8 GHZ M processor with 1 GB RAM, 60 GB 7200rpm HD, 15.4 inch screen, radeon 9600 Pro and DVD+R burner. I got this 2 summers ago for a whooping $2500 and have never had a problem (this includes 3 yrs of insurance which was $300 or so plus $100 tax). Basically I got top of the line then, bottom of the line now. It runs every game including BF2 (low settings) and has been good to me. I would not say anything bad about Dell laptops, desktops maybe a bit. However if you ever have a problem they are very very fast about fixing it.

That xps600 uses the new NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16 MCP motherboard (2 PCIe x16 slots for SLI) and the site says it is using the 7800GTX video cards. But yeah, the price can get up there depending on what you want. Mine would cost me $3800 with that 20inch wide screen flat panel, which has had good reviews. You just have to catch it when they have those 34% off sales, then you can save some $$.

I like to build my own mainly to overclock, but if the Dell cost the same or cheaper than me buying the peice parts, I'll go buy a Dell. At least I'll have 2 or 3 years of support so if anything breaks, I get it replaced for free rather than out of my own pocket. My first Dell had those IBM Deskstar drives in it and they were notorious for crashing, I had to have mine replaced, but that was IBM's doing just like someone else said, Dell doesn't make HDD, they just sale the different brands. I haven't had any problems with my second box or notebook.

Ow please, that 1700$ is a basic price, when you want 2gig ram, the fastest CPU they have and some other stuff in it you will pay much more.

Also, as we all know, DELL uses the cheapest stuff available in there PC's , I have seen many DELL PC's at my home because there is something wrong (I repair PC's) and when looking in the inside it's sometimes unbelievable, motherboards with only 2 PCI slots and stuff like that, and tons of other cheap cheap stuff.

DO NOT BUY DELL!!

I love my Inspiron 9300lap top, it rocks at gaming and is portable and did I mention upgradeable video card and memory too.

I have Dimension 8200 & 8300 desktops and a XPS Gen2 note book at home.
At work I have 25 Optiplex workstations and 2 Poweredge servers - trust me they suck.

I wouldn't buy Dell again.

EDIT: not for the spec but for the service and warranties - Dell after-sales support is shocking.

all Sales and Customer Service calls are handled by indian call centres now which gets boring real fast when you're both struggling to understand each other. I miss the friendly Irish peeps.

Dell..... Ugh.

Friend recently got a dell gaming setup. We benched it and it was well below the 3d mark 05 score that it should be at. My lesser system was outscoring it by a few thousand points. We then ended up trying to get rid of all the preload crap and doing a fresh install. That bumped up the score a little bit but it still wasn't where it was at. We checked the bios and everything was cool. We finally ended up cracking the case and looking inside and it wasn't pretty.

One small ass motherboard all smooshed together up next to ribbons and cables, some generic ATI x850, and a massive collection of 2 PCI slots made up a rather nice oven of plastic and silicon that would probably go bad in about a year.

We sorta just ended up accepting the fact that the crappy mobo was probably the limiting factor. It plays BF2 pretty nicely but not where it should be at for whats inside.

Dells systems are designed to fail. All that heat = stress = frying = you pay for **** after the warranty is gone or you get frustrated after talking to retarded Indians and buy another Dell system (yes people will do that).
Some systems are remarkably built rock solid but its getting more rare.

Dell is begining to become as bad as HP.

They outsourced their tech support awhile back, IF you wanna PAY EXTRA for their stupid gold plan or whatever it is/was called you can talk to an american that may actually know wth their talking about. Me I just call a friend or fix it myself, oh and no offense meant toward indians or other nationalities...just...speak slower and enunciate.

its big business in india now with the call centres.

HP/Compaq now use them along with a scottish one and its funny because they apprently go to great lengths too get these indian call centre people to try and pretend there british.

They give them ellecution lessons and they all have to have a story about where they live in England etc all to try and fool the claler in too thinking there talking to someone in England.
