ive got an X850 XT, my friend has a 7800 GTX ... he brags about it, i brag about the fact that i get the same 100 FPS in the corner that he does and my card cost 150 less and ive had it for 6 months. Im also about even with him in CS:S, same processor and same settings... he beats me when we go to higher rez than 1280x1024, but thats the highest my monitor supports so :laugh: , remember, the most important part of your PC to consider when buying a new graphics card is not the CPU (better GPU = higher FPS NO MATTER HOW CRAPPY YOUR PROCESSOR IS its a hinderence not a bottleneck) but your monitor is more important... a 7800 is worthless below 1280x1024 (well for now, im sure next years games will give the 7800 a tough time at 1600 and above), and as for SLI... why bother, a 6800 or above will give you about your monitors refresh rate, its not worth 300+ dollars to see a higher number in the corner

when i first set up my new rig i had a x850 xt pe installed and bf2 ran quite good, however far away from flawless (especially when playing in ultra mode and 1280 res).

then i gave away my x850 and bought the 7800gtx. and yes; there is definitely a huge difference between those 2 cards.

I basically got about 70 - 80 fps average on the x850 which was not a bad value. however when entering battles with many players, tanks and choppers the framerate sometimes went below 35 fps which was indeed noticible.

now with the 7800gtx im never below 60 fps, no matter how big the battles are.

in fact i was a littly disappointed in my rig, since it wasn't giving me the performance boost i was expecting it to give.

with the 7800gtx im for the first time in my life really content with the specs and results of my system.

by the way; the x850 was loud as hell. sometimes i couldn't stand the sound the fan was producing, specially when reducing the fan speed, since it then began producing an even more disturbing and painful high pitched sound...

you barely hear the 7800gtx. For the first time im actually able to sleep, when the pc is turned on..

Ive got 2 in sli ! and to be honest there useless without a top end cpu ive got a 3500+ and its a major bottleneck

humpf... ill just sick with my 9800pro(256mb,256bit) i think its a great card... but for the people with enough money to buy the 7800GTX in SLI...(if you could send a cupple my way that would be great..)

No contest, if you want to run high with 1600x1200 or above, nothing comes close to the 7800GTX. Nvidia seems to have better drivers now anyway. Transparency AA is also a feature that the 7800GTX has, it makes it so those shimmering fences look much better and more like real fences. There is also a 7800GT out which is the lower performing version, but cheaper as well.

On the bright side, it makes a refreshing change knowing my cpu is the bottleneck,
instead of the olde way of it being the gfx card you were constantly looking to update, its now the cpu
the athlon64 x2 4400 looks tempting
anyways PPU cards are gonna help a bit there with cpu performance,
i think the new UT engines going to support it a few other big names too, its the nxt big thing i tell ya

Not only do you need a good CPU for the 7800 it takes up a lot of power so a 500 watt or higher is needed. 550 i would think is suffcient. 650 is needed for duals imo.

actually less than an 6800ultra, but still a good 100W, double that in SLI

Too much money for me, I just upgraded to x800pro last year not gonna upgrade again for a long while and thats gonna be a new Mobo with dual cpus.

Nah, Im running on a Nexus 400watt silent PSU and it has never given me any problems. Also, I have 8 harddrives in my rig :) Cant even remember when my last lockup or bluescreen was. I'd rather have a good 400watt than a crappy 500 or 650watt.
