    Vista- Needs more RAM?

I’ve just upgraded(?) to Vista x64 from a skt939 X2 4400 on XPx64. New specs are in my sig- all is new apart from the gfx card which I carried over from my old PC. This is 18 months old now but ran BF2 on highest specs on my XP machine.

I’ve updated drivers, ran all the hotfixes on offer, done all the normal tweaking of Vista, etc. but it still does not seem to run well.

As examples, my 3D Mark score has risen on my new machine (not by much as it is currently limited by the same gfx card as before), but my Steam benchmark score has gone down by about 10-15 fps, & I also get the 'Vista judder’ in BF2.

I have checked my memory usage when running the game, & it sometimes seems to run close to 100%, when my machine is idle it runs pretty close to 1GB.

My question is: would I benefit from going up to 4GB? I primarily use this machine for BF2 & have seen that increasing ram may in itself cause other problems.

I will upgrade my gfx card some point soon, but given the performance difference between machines using the same gfx card I don’t think that this is the answer.

No. I see no difference with 2.5GB of RAM and 2GB of RAM, going to 4GB will need super-memory intensive applications.

Vista with ALL the candy is taking 607MB adjusted for cache (36 running processes, Windows Defender, NOD32, Perfectdisk, and others - superfetch SERVICE taking 100MB, Superfetch itself taking 1.4GB, DWM taking 60MB, Firefox taking 100MB), meaning if I were to run BF2 on top of it (which peaks at around 1.2GB on the highest of the highest settings), it would STILL run perfectly fine - starting a memory intensive app kills DWM, and all the memory intensive services go down to around 1-2MB. BF2 usually takes 800MB, just for reference.

You will benefit, but not for BF2.

I have 58 services running on a new self-built machine (no pre-installed crap) & is running at 1.10GB with only iexplore running in a window. Other than this, main services running are NOD32, Creative console, Xfire & mobo console- that's it.

What Paging file size should I be running in Vista with 2GB of RAM?- initial & maximum?

Personally if the drive/partition that Vista is installed on is big enough I would just leave the pagefile on system managed. Here's one of the better Vista tweaking guides,

including a detailed part about the pagefile.

As far as needing more ram for something like BF2, I'm thinking 3-4GB is needed now. Reason for saying that is before the new Punkbuster "services" with BF2 running my total memory usage was around 70-75%, and since the new services it is 90-95%.

If I ran vista, I would have more than 2 gigs. If it idles at 600, that leaves me with 1.4 gigs for games. I'd probably want a hint more than that, so might as well have 4 gigs.

You should also read up on how Vista manages memory. If an app/game needs the memory, Vista throws everything it can onto the pagefile to free up memory for the game/app. Like I said before these new PB services with BF2 running my ram usage topped out between 70-75%,

Haven't got a screen shot since, but now it tops out at 90-95%. The PB services themselves may not necessarily use much ram (around 3-5MB), but they cause the game to use more. And I'm not too sure that they aren't having an affect on Vista memory management either, as I can fire up a LAN server that doesn't use PB and the total memory usage goes back down to 70-75% (and that is a 16 bot co-op server to boot).

Went back to XP and I'm back to Vista. The difference is now negligible. A few friends of mine *cough* gave me the service pack pre-release, how kind of them :).

exactly. Thats why I'm not paying all sorts of money to beta test an operating system.

The "beta testing" stopped long ago, when the 158.x drivers (nVidia) came out.

It didn't do much as far as I see though.
