Re: Downgrading to XP

My question is what OS do the gamers who have rigs with 4gigs of Ram or more are they getting raped with vista or buying XP 64 bit?

who uses 4 gigs of ram? I have friends that do video editing that barely use 1 1/2. I have 2 gigs and I don't think I've used much of that 2nd gig. Maybe you need 4 gigs for vista?? But thats kind of lame.

The max amount of RAM XP 32 bit will recognize is something like 3.43 gigs of RAM.

XP 32 can use all of that. I know with BF2, I use roughly 1.3 gigs of RAM.

It's 4GB per process. No problem with it at all. You have to change a few boot options, but it'll work with 4GB of RAM perfectly well. Now, for those on 8GB, it's a slightly different matter, for the most memeory intensive applications (that require more than 4GB address space at once).

All you need is 2gb of ram... I don't know why I went with 4, I only got 2.8/4 recognized anyways.

As for what OS to use with 4GB of ram from a gamer point of view - XP.

Then again, you'll need to get vista64 when DX10 games come out so really it comes down to how much money you are willing to spend. 64bit OS doesn't have a lot of support either or not as much as 32bit so you may be in the dark on certian things anyways (XP over Vista)...

Just stick with 2-3 gb of ram.

EDIT. 4GB of ram can actually make your computer slower though I don't know why but it is true. After running benchmark tests with 2GB of ram VS 4 GB of ram when my system was new and freshly installed, I actually noticed a decrease in marks with the 4GB of ram after a few tries. So again, just save your money and don't make a silly mistake like I did :)

Your pc had chunks of data equaling the size of Maryland data strung about all throughout Texas, relatively speaking, so it takes a few more nanoseconds to route data through a larger state. Now, if you're actually using 3-3.5 gb of RAM, you'd see an obvious increase in performance because you won't be thrashing the swapfile...on your HD...which is (relatively) like taking a dirt bike across Kaaah-leee-faaa-nee-yah* to get to your data in Mexico.

*A better e-Schwarzenegger you will not hear in a web faaa-room.

Why not just wait for SP1 ? ?

That should fix most the Bugs, Also iv heard it should be out 28th of September... hopefully what i heard is right, it should fix most problems!

Well what's wrong with your Vista system, perhaps I can help. I've been running vista for about a month and after a little optimizing (its actually very configurable), its blazing away for me.

If he's a level designer, I'm assuming he'll need a bit of RAM.

I run 4 gigs Ram with Vista 64, and it recognizes all of it. Does it use it all? ...probably not, but BF2 runs amazingly fast, and I am good to go when DX10 games come along. Thats the point, and why I got it. But more important ...I like it.

I have come to realize that the main reason people have problems with Vista, is because they are trying to make it run on machines that don't have enough resources. I have no problems with it. The programs I could no longer run with it, I was able to find an alternative, which in most cases was better.

This rig is running at some amazing speeds. I tell people I can load a map on BF2 in about 10 seconds, and I get told I lie, or exaggerating. Vista = no problem ...love it, and couldn't imagine going back <--- to XP.
