The multiplayer just wasn't engaging enough.

It was certainly a curious thing when The Last of Us multiplayer project was a no-show during the latest PlayStation Showcase event this week. The last we heard anything about this project came in January 2023 when Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann promised we would hear more about it later in 2023.

Co-president of Naughty Dog, Neil Druckmann, posted a new blog post from the company that shares a new piece of concept art from The Last of Us multiplayer game that they are working on. Druckmann did share a couple of smaller pieces of information alongside the new art but promised that far more information will be coming later in 2023.
