    Valve Reflects Back on Steam in 2018 and Looks Forward to 2019


    Valve just released a fairly comprehensive "year in review" for Steam that covers everything from the Steam Store, to active users, to a breakdown of users by region, to changes made to the Steam Community, to upcoming changes they're already working on for 2019, and more.

    Most of what is discussed in the blog is essentially a recap of what we already talked about at various times in 2018. You're more than welcome to check out the full entry for yourself, but we're going to focus on what Valve is talking about bringing to you in 2019 "and beyond."

    Valve released a substantial update for Steam today. This update includes big additions for SteamVR and the Steam Controller.
    SteamVR
    • Added new Desktop Game Theater support, run any of your normal desktop games and have them appear on a giant virtual screen in your headset. Any game that supports Steam Broadcast should work with this feature, some tuning of the games graphical settings may be required for the best experience.
    • Added new Desktop overlay button, access it via the system dashboard. Use the grip on the motion controller to bring up a keyboard, and the touchpad for mouse wheel movement.

  • Valve Update Wrap-up - Steam Client, Dota 2, and Team Fortress 2 (February 18, 2015)

    Multiple updates were released tonight from Valve. There was a Steam client update, an update for Dota 2, and an update for Team Fortress 2.

    Let's just go ahead and list all the updates in the order that I mentioned them.
    Steam Client
    General - Added UI listing your owned DLC in the library details view - Changed recent games lists to include recent purchases as well as recently played - Added a new Browser settings page with new option to delete the cookies use by the built in Steam browser - Fixed some cases where certain long chat messages could cause long client hangs - Fixed drop down options in settings dialog initially showing as blank - Fixed a crash in OpenGL games when taking a screenshot or recording video - Fixed multiple crashes on shutdown & client restart for update - Fixed check boxes in list panels flickering or not rendering immediately after mouse wheel scroll of the list - Improved responsiveness of library details view for games where you have many friends who play - Fixed case where running a game that has Cloud Sync disabled, when in Offline Mode, could cause existing Cloud files to be ove

    A new update for Steam Music has been rolled out that will bring a more cohesive experience to your music listening. If you purchased or own any game soundtrack and still have that game installed through Steam, the soundtrack will now automatically be added to your Steam Music Library.

  • Steam Music Beta Introduces a Desktop Interface in Today's Steam Beta Client Update

    Today's update for the Steam beta client is full of new features. Notably, the update now allows you to assign multiple categories to games plus it introduces a new desktop interface for Steam Music Beta!

    The desktop interface includes all the same features, including library setup, album and artist views, settings, and a basic player which is also available in-game via the Steam Overlay.

    To access the desktop interface, simply load up the Steam beta client, click on "Library" at the top, and then select "Music" from the drop down menu. Get ready for the list of changes from the July 23 update to the Steam client beta.
