  • Valve Kicks Off Spring Cleaning Event

Valve Kicks Off Spring Cleaning Event

Play some old games before you buy new ones?

Given that we already seem to know when the Steam Summer Sale will go live, it just makes sense that you should play and finish some of your back catalog first. That seems to be what Valve was thinking when they kicked off their Spring Cleaning Event today. This event rewards you for playing old games that have been sitting in your library, games you haven't played yet, and even some new, free games they're offering for the duration of this event.

The following games are freer to play while the event is live. I don't believe...

Review: Last Year: The Nightmare (PC)

A solid asymmetrical survival-horror game that's light on content.

Asymmetrical multiplayer games have been going steady for the past few years now. Some of the biggest games in that particular genre include the long departed Evolve, the still ongoing Dead by Daylight, and even Friday the 13th if you're into that sort of thing. You can now add in Last Year: The Nightmare to the mix as it combines 5 versus 1 multiplayer with elements of survival-horror. As with those other titles, Last Year places one player in the shoes of a bloodthirsty murderer while the rest of the players play as one of five teenagers trying to survive and escape. What it delivers is a well-crafted gameplay experience that ultimately comes up short on content. Last Year: The Nightmare relies on a number of tried and true horror movie clich├ęs. The group of teenagers include the nerdy kid, the popular girl, a stereotypical jock, and m...

  • Jim French, Voice Actor Known for Left 4 Dead, Dota 2, and Half-Life 2 Has Passed Away

Jim French, the voice actor behind Bill in the Left 4 Dead games, passed away on December 21 at the age of 89.

French brought a force and a life to Bill that immediately made him my go-to choice any time my friends and I played a game of Left 4 Dead. He continued to breathe life into Bill for a special mission in Payday.

French also provided the voice for Father Grigori in Half-Life 2. He was the lone Fisherman in Half-Life 2: Lost Coast. Dota 2 players will know him best as the voice of the Elder Titan. Back in 1959, long before acting in games was ever even a thought, French was a morning radio DJ for KIRO...

Gabe Newell Says Valve is Working on a New Single Player Game and Source 2

Valve's Gabe Newell had an AMA today in the quasi-satirical r/The_Gaben subreddit. During his brief session answering community questions, Newell revealed that Valve might actually still be a game developer.

    Who knew?

Reddit user Baldemoto asked that which should not be asked to Newell. His response will shock you (assuming you missed the headline that you clicked on to read this news piece).
Is Valve still working on any fully-fledged single player games? An unidentified anonymous

PSA: The Steam Winter Sale 2015 is Here

The Steam Winter Sale 2015 is here. You have savings on this, that, and the other. There's even a comic. From the looks of things, there are no flash sales. There are no daily deals. This seems to be like the Fall sale in that what you see is what you save. The items in the sale will not go any cheaper than what they are. Now, the sale promised savings on thousands of games but the Store page itself (when it loaded) only said "149 games" on sale. Needless to say, the page is loading super slowly right now so it might be a glitch. You can also earn cards by going through your Discovery Queue each day or by buying games. You can also get a free...

Early SteamOS Gaming Performance 'Significantly Worse' Than Windows

Ars Technica recently put SteamOS through its paces and found that Valve's new operating system performs "significantly worse" than Windows when it comes to playing games. That seems like a pretty big issue since the thing you're going to be doing the most on SteamOS is playing games. While SteamOS is currently the new kid in town, it still doesn't mean it shouldn't be compared to the most widely used operating system in use by a vast majority of Steam users. Ars found that the performance gap between Windows 10 and SteamOS were anywhere from 21% to 58%, depending on the game. Even Valve's own first-party titles struggled to match the performance in Windows 10. ...
