Physics Based Rendering Added to Morrowind Engine

A modder, Hrnchamd, managed to get Physics Based Rendering (PBR) and normal mapping added into the 14-year old Morrowind game engine. The video was uploaded by user PeterBitt on YouTube and shows off the work done by Hrnchamd.

It obviously isn't the best looking use of PBR, but it could breathe some added life into that game one day.

Sony is Being Sued Over Killzone: Shadow Fall's Graphics

Sony is being hit with a lawsuit for "deceptive marketing" of Killzone: Shadow Fall because the game's multiplayer mode isn't a "true" 1080p resolution. Douglas Ladore from California, filed the suit in the Northern District California court. He says that Sony advertised that the game runs at a native 1080p resolution but it "used a technological shortcut that was supposed to provide 'subjectively similar' results." See, what Killzone does for the multiplayer component is render each frame at 960 by 1080 resolution with a "temporal upscale." On the next frame, the lines that were "blank" in the previous frame are rendered, also at 960 by 1080. So it's still technically rendering at 1920x1080, just not all in the same frame. The lawsuit says that Sony falsely advertised...

Digital Foundry Examines The Last of Us Remastered and Framerate

The latest "Digital Foundry vs." feature takes a hard look at The Last of Us Remastered. One of the big promises for the release is that the game will have an unlocked framerate that will hit the sweet 60fps. Just how often does it hit that magical number, though?
To answer the question everyone's been asking, frame-rate isn't locked to 60fps, but The Last of Us Remastered does spend the vast majority of its time at the optimal refresh. Problems can kick in during busy combat scenes, and just like the PS3 version, particles and transparent effects in particular can take their toll - the first confrontation with a fungus-spewing Bloater sees frame-rate hit

  • Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare Visuals Are So Good, You Won't Be Able to Tell It's a Game

Please, try to hold back the laughter until after you finish reading this news post. Sledgehammer games, in a new trailer, boldly proclaimed that the visuals in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare are so damn good, that you won't even be able to tell that they're from a game.

"Because our subject matter is very advanced and technical, and we're kind of peering into the future, we did whatever it took to make the game look as photorealistic as possible," said Art Director Joe Salud. "The first thing the gamer's going to notice when they see our facial performances, they're going to wonder, like 'It looks like it's on TV!'

  • Kojima Releases Video Visual Comparison of Every Console Version of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

Not content with releasing comparison statistics and still image comparisons, Hideo Kojima has now released a new video comparison for Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes. He shows off each version of the game and the visual differences between them.

Kojima just Tweeted something extra about this video. He says that "special treatment for the sky is made for PS4 based on atmosphere simulation." So yes, it seems as though the PlayStation 4 version has yet another one-up on the competition here in the form of more robust sky and weather simulations....

Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will Include Better Visuals than PC Version

Crystal Dynamics says that Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition will feature better visuals than even the PC version of the non-definitive edition. The Definitive Edition is slated for release on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Sure, I'll bite. So what does Crystal Dynamics planned that will make it better than the already graphically superior PC version of the game?
Speaking specifically to the differences between the Definitive Edition and the PC version, Amos stated that the next-gen versions of the game use upgraded character models for Lara and all of the major story NPCs in the game, in addition to the TressFX and higher-resolution

  • Digital Foundry Compares Battlefield 4 on PlayStation 4 vs Xbox One vs PC

Digital Foundry has delivered in spades again tonight with their in-depth analysis of Battlefield 4 visual fidelity and performance between the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and the PC. They do stress that both console versions are being run on development kits and are still in development.

Needless to say, there are some basic differences in image quality that need knocking on the head right away. Chief among them is the hot topic of internal resolution, where we determine that the Xbox One code is indeed running at 1280x720. If this is set in stone for release - as is likely - the Microsoft version is poised to give us the most aliasing
