Im suprised that a supposed expert in the field has been reduced to blatant whining over something that hasnt been released yet because it does not meet his expectations.? Thats fanboy behaviour right there!

as for the PC only crowd here (an i used to be a pc only gamer until about 3 years ago) .. get a grip. sadly times have changed for the PC gaming scene what with spirialling dev costs, online capable consoles, expensive graphics cards and rampant piracy making it pointless from a cost point of view to develop PC leading titles. its a sad fact that its cheaper to lead development on consoles and port to the PC for extra revenue generation. This is evident to me personally by the fact that my main gaming rig is now an xbox 360 along with the majority of my ex pc gamer friends.

Plus can I say to all those bad company haters.. you don't know what your missing out on. it has its problems and really should of been ported to PC but what a battlefield game! (and yes i have played battlefield since 1942 came out).
I am a fan boy, yes. I can't help that, but I do my best to tone down my opinions.

What I am trying to get across here is that DICE/EA seem to be focusing on a product driven design methodology. This is where the company develops a product and then tries to sell it to the customer. Initial uptake may be low, but they hope by constant pressure and advertising, it will catch on.

I want a market driven design methodology. This is where the company researches the market before hand and then designs a new product based on customers demands.

I understand the concept that there are huge overhead and variable costs involved with the development and do respect the fact that money is tight. But, if 1943 is going to be a PC release, it means they have had a dedicated team working on it's porting from consoles.

I just believe that the revenue they have spent there would be better used on supporting other development teams, working on what we want (if they even are!). I know DICE is a large company and can produce multiple titles, but resource allocation should probably consider what the market wants

Here is my personal thought about what you are saying:
Who are "we" as in "working on what we want" in your statement?
The entire market? The total gaming network forum members? The fanboys? The BF2 players? Hardcore gamers? Who are you representing here? The majority of gamers aren't posting a single word on any game forums.

If you see the new Battlefield products as not in the market driven category, you are suggesting that there isn't a market for these games no matter how many Bad Company games are sold out there, no matter how many have shown interrest for the new Battlefield games. I doubt the BC1 buyers bought the game only based on heavy advertising - that would be pretty sad.

Do you mean to say there are noone out there who's looking for an FPS that has that comic touch? - that clean, non hardcore, fun touch, or the smaller then 64 player touch?

I am certainly one of the guys who loves to play different styles of games depending on the moment, and I can't wait to play the new games with with you guys when they are public!

See you on the battlefield! :)

I think what others are getting at is that 1942,V,2 and 2142 all had a niche in the market, they catered for lot of the Fps crowd, they offered the feeling of teamwork and squad play using squad based voice chat and the squad/commander system. They catered for the 'casual' gamer by being a pick up and play game without any complex game mechanics to understand. A large range of vehicles and infantry classes covered more of what I would say is the FPS crowd who like close combat intense fire fights and the Fps that does not like that! they crowd that loved to be part of a large war machine clashing with the other team in tank, jets and on foot.
The games catered to everyone and yet were unique at the same time. A cartoonish fps is already out, Fps's with smaller player limits were already out there.

I play Battlefield PC because I can do countless things in a single map, while other games focus almost exclusively on a single concept. In this way it's almost all those games rolled into one. A real, accessable and fun Battlefield. Which is why I always come back to Battlefield PC, it does everything and it does it right!

The 64 player count enables that.

Now with all due respect Pirelli, you are right. The vast majority of the Battlefield fanbase would not post on the forums. But that also does not mean Alex is off the mark with his perception of what gamers want. Battlefield 2 has been consistently among the most played online PC games year-in year-out. Would you not call these people a fanbase? Alex has been merely pointing out that the veteran PC Battlefield fanbase has been expecting a true sequel to the PC franchise. By true sequel I mean a game which improves and adds content; gameplay features and capabilities. The console Battlefield games are being seen as doing the opposite.

I admit that what DICE is doing for the console market with the Battlefield franchise may be perfectly suited for it. It makes complete sense for a more casual market and for the consoles capabilities. I also really look forward to Battlefield 1943 and Bad Company 2 being played on PC. It is just the fear that, that is ALL the veteran Battlefield PC fanbase can expect from now on. DICE can not expect that the formula they've establised with PC Battlefield has died out in popularity?

The veteran Battlefield PC fanbase were and still are expecting a continuation and addition to the formula established in Battlefields past.

I'm hoping for a Modern Warfare (improvement of Battlefield 2) sequel. I don't mind waiting, it just shouldn't be indefinitely. Some news or acknowledgement would be great. Current information from DICE developers is really ambigious :shakehead:

                -----

I would like to make a suggestion for the BF2 patch. Would you pass the idea around at DICE about including a new weapon kit for the Anti-Tank class? BF2 already has static Stinger and IGLA missile sites (anti-aircraft), a portable Stinger or Igla missile for the Anti-Tank class would make a world of difference on the larger 64 player maps.

Best of luck for Battlefield 1943, Battlefield Bad Company 2 and that future PC Battlefield? () can't wait!

A veteran Battlefield PC gamer :salute:

Of course - however the old BF games sort of had that feeling without having very few maps and low player count on servers. I know BF1943 isn't supposed to be a full scale game, but the lack of news for us fans of the old school BF games, is somewhat annoying.

It started when Bad Company was announced. At first, it was like a dream come true, but I quickly came to my senses again after I saw it was console only. I don't mind consoles, but FPS games with a controller just... don't work.

Us BF2/2142 fans thought, "hey that's OK, I mean the console players deserve a good BF game too, and thankfully DICE isn't doing a half arsed port of it".

Just when the community is starting to give up hope about a new game, BF1943 and BFBC2 are announced. Yes! I can't wait to play all those old maps again with great graphics, and with squadplay and all those things that made BF2/2142 great. But wait... 24 players? 3 maps? 3 classes? What is this?

64 players for me, really gave a good feeling of immersion. You could do so many things!

                  • Join a squad, grab a jeep and cap some back flags to make their tickets bleed faster.
                  • Have two people jump into a chopper/gunship and wreak some havoc.
                  • Crawl up on a mountain and practice long distance sniping (which in my opinion, is one of the best things to do in BF2).
                  • Grab a shotgun and battle it out in close quarters.
                  • Infiltrate the enemy base to destroy the commander assets, and maybe knife some AFK guy
                  • Set up a camp at a flag, trying to hold it at all costs
                  • Being a super aggresive medic
                  • Hanging back a little, not killing so many people but healing, reviving or resupplying
                  • Get a tank and harass people in jets/gunships

In 2142 there was even more things to do! I know you can do many of these things with much less than 64 players, but it's... just not the same thing. 64 players allowed for huge maps, and that is what made BF unique. You really were a part of a huge, dynamic battlefield where you can help win the round in an endless amount of different ways.

Yet again, BF1943 might not be supposed to be a traditional BF game, but since it's all that is announced right now, it saddens many people. I would stay optimistic about BFBC2, but since we have no info there, what can I do?

I really hope DICE haven't forgot about us long time fans. That's all I'm saying. I know many many people that would sacrifice destructive environments for larger servers with more players. Make the right choices, all I'm saying.

Thanks for reading the forums and actually bother with replaying, Pirelli. I know we're all whining horribly

                    Okay, I got this one...

"We" are the one who bought BF 1942, BF Vietnam and BF2. Raved about it to our friends, played them day and night, started websites dedicated to them and don't even get me started on the love that the MOD community has for these games.

"We" are the ones who pay for servers so we can play online.

"We" are all so the ones who had the foresight to wonder why BF 2142 was getting all the love from EA/Dice and abandoning the patch system for BF2. Many called the fact that BF 2142 would not be as big as BF 2 (and the server/player numbers have proved us right!)
"We" can plainly see that you were listening to someone else OTHER THAN the majority of BF players on that call.

"We" are the ones who have been waiting 3 Years, 7 Months and 29 Days for a new improved BF to get our game on. It has been so long that a number of people I know where were big BF 2 gamers have moved on the other games (as in new graphics, engines and toys to kill with. You know the games I am talking about...)

"We" are the ones who ask for things like larger maps, destructible environment, support for multicore processors, widescreen monitors, more players per map, and so on...

"We" are ALSO the ones who have come to LOVE what BF 1942, BF Vietnam and BF 2 have brought to the PC gaming arena.

"We" are the ones who feel like a great series of games are dying so that a company can make money on "Fun" games.

Oh, and don't go far... "We" know the score, if EA/Dice wanted to quell ANY negitive feeling from the die hard BF players, All they would have to do is:

                    1) Tell us that the "Good old days of gaming" are over
                    or
                    2) Tell us that there is a future plan for a BF game that is as big as BF2.

                    :salute:

*NOTE: As stated before, just the facts. No hate here for BF 2142. I am sure it is fun and that EA/Dice made a lot of money on it. But that whole "patching" thing...

If you think that you can beat a game like TF2 etc then go ahead and try, but imo it will fail

people want Battlefield for what it is, not what its being turned into (for purposes I cannot understand, to perhaps please console kiddies? *flame)

and also, while some people may want to play Comic games at times (this is true) it is also true that some people want to play Battlefield, not unlimited ammo, regen health, console player numbers, 3 maps, "IO was good wasn't it? Lets make a game like that... Battlefield

they want Battlefield as in Battlefield 2, 2142.

I know you can do it Dice, under all those layers of wasting time making Heroes, Bad Company etc I still have faith that you can make BF3

                          because who else will?

I just hope that when you go into the area of creating games that use ideas that have been done to death you are not disheartened when its success does not compare to the true BF games...

They better get their stuff together and let the PC market know whats going on. Many of the large BF2 tournaments are already looking to Arma2 and OFP2 as a replacement.

Anyway I think Alex98UK put that in a very mature manner and in a very kind way. The thing is you can't bash them, you need to do constructive critisism, you can't just flame and bash.

Good job Alex, I sure hope they listen to your wise comments!
