  • TGN Reviews Fallout 3

Total Gaming Network's newest article writer, Eldri, has published his first review today. In his review, he takes an in-depth look at the hit game Fallout 3. Here is a portion of the review:
The Fallout series has been around for over a decade, offering four games that remain close to the hearts of many PC gamers. Interplay’s Black Isle Studio developed the original Fallout, which garnered critical acclaim and received no reviews to speak of under an 8 (out of 10). Black Isle also created Fallout 2, which was as solid a game, despite critics noting certain issues that weren’t fixed from the first installment.

The Fallout reigns were then turned over to Micro Forte for Fallout: Tactics, a tactical combat-style game where the player controls a party and attacks by clicking on your target. The departure from role-playing gameplay was a letdown to many Fallout fans and the blow was worsened when Interplay closed Black Isle Studios two years after Tactics’ release. Development of Fallout 3 ceased, and instead, Interplay released Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel in 2004, a lack-luster action role-playing game and the series’ first venture onto consoles.

I started playing this but soon got bored. The gameplay seemed highly repetitive and trying to find certain locations was nigh impossible as the pip-boy map doesn't update your location when you are in the u bahn network.

Fully agree with your rating the game is not for everybody though, and it really is stuff like crashes and glitches that are holding this game back.

I've heard the story's ending is legitimately terrible from multiple sources.... Also, the new expansions are supposed to change the 200 slight variations ending right? I'll wait and see if the expansions are worthwhile.

          great review eldri.

I was not looking into this game as I never played the first two but I love Interplay so IDK why i didnt get them.

Hopefully this will help some people in their decision in getting this game.

I heard its one of those games where the ending changes depending on your path.

That was supposed to be the case. But I think they severely scaled back the "hundreds of endings" goal they were aiming for.

I agree, the ending was disappointing.

                This however, is not:

In an interview with Eurogamer, Fallout 3 lead producer Jeff Gardiner reveals that the Broken Steel downloadable content due out in March allow players to take their character all the way to level 30.

You guys really missed the whole point of the game, complaining about the ending, because the game doesn't have a definitive ending. Yes, there is the end to the main quest which I didn't like very much, but anyone who's actually put several hours into the game, or Elder Scrolls games will know this game style is about numerous the side-quests, each with multiple choices and outcomes.

Anyway, the review was excellent and I agree with it a lot. I have one quibble though, where eldri grouped Graphics and Design together and gave it an 8/10. I completely agree with the graphics portion (I had buggy issues too), but the Design (including the style, atmosphere, etc) was top notch in my opinion, especially when listening to GNR. The post-apocalyptic feel was great in the game and definitely one of the strongest points, in my opinion.

I honestly never had trouble finding a location and compared to Oblivion it was much easier.

Exactly my thoughts I wanted to add to the review. When something is important for me regarding games it is the atmosphere. When I play a real rpg I don't want to follow blindly the mainquest to the ending. It's just amazing in this game to travel around and find interesting places with their own small quests and background. (my favorites are the dunwich house and the Oasis where you're able to find maybe the most important background person of the series)

Bethesda really deserves a price for maintaining and even expanding the feeling of a series which was created by totally different developers.

Nevertheless the final rating gives this game what it deserves. It's the best game of 08 and one of the best and atmospheric games I've played so far and I can't wait to get my hands on the DLC.
