Re: TGN's Big Releases of 08' Top 10 List

MyIS did some really good things with Electronic Arts to help the support of Medal of Honor Airborne after it had a very bad start off on the PC.

We are here to report news, and offer support, and an area for discussion about gaming.

You could do that if you wanted to...and I think it would be fantastic in the message that it would send. But because $$$ are involved...it won't happen. I'm not here to mess with your livelihood. But I can't help but wonder if in the long term, you, as well as the community, wouldn't be better for it.

So in general, I think you have some power to make things better for the PC gamer. Yes, it might hit you in the pocket in the short term...but long term, everybody wins...even KAOS because they get to push THQ with additional manpower and development dollars.

I think you have that power....and I also think you bear that responsibility. This site exists because of the fans....well, your base needs help in collectively speaking out.
in some respects i agree with you :)
but as a community member and speaking your mind and opinion as a mass.... aren't we infact doing that?

we report the news that they give us..... but if i were to "harass" them and try to knock them over the head..... why would they even try to come here and post?
you get more flys with sugar then you do with salt :salute:

at the same time i do not want to come off as a "fanboy" ... this is where the discussion part comes in....

we don't have to like it to keep it .... people have a right to their opinions as do we :) this is a place to express that....

      or so the itent is.....

the moral of my story is that this is the totalgamingnetwork.... and consoles are apart of that
each section has its respective discussions...... both pc and console alike.....

80% of our areas are pc related.... why not add the console part?... who knows you might even convert them LOL

The problem I had with your list was that I think that the biggest games are not only the biggest sellers, but also the most innovative. On your list, Spore will be huge and so is Super Smash Bros. But most of the others, while being wildly popular, are repeats (sequels). That's why I posted mine because alot of the games I posted are more concerned with innovation in gameplay.

If consoles become just as customizable as PCs, then doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of a console? I thought consoles were to deliver current-gen gaming without spending a ton of money on constant upgrades every few months.

Replacing a small hard drive with a bigger one is completely different from replacing the GPU or CPU. A new hard drive won't make the system more powerful, or faster. (in console terms)

Re: TGN's Big Releases of 08' Top 10 List

Stu- you are the man, I agree with you 100%. Its alot cheaper keeping up with a console than it is a computer (400 bucks for a 3-4 year system compared to 4000 just to upgrade to the latest adn greatest rig).

You bring up some interesting points. This brings up some intersting trends you see in todays gaming market are

              1. SEQUEL SEQUEL AND HELL MORE SEQUELS (as one person said the "EA" stratregy)

              2. A push for a Casual Gaming ie Wii like mini games, motion control input devices, and downloaded arcade style games (like those found on XBLA and the new WiiWare service).

              3. And DLC and how to make money off it.

              1. With one you can see on the top list from TGN (I dont' agree with some of them, i don't think Haze will be that big and brothers in arm..gah...ANOTHER WWII game....its getting to the point that we've had as many WWII games as they're been ppl fighting in the war, and where is RE5 or Prototype). Most of the games listed are sequels, with the exceptions of Haze (which is going to be like every other FPS with a hook) and Spore. In todays VG market, established franchises make money...unless they completely tank (cough FU SONIC). Sequels are safer risk for developers and publishers so why not invest into something you know will sell, make it shiny as hell and release to the masses. Sell a Million plus and rinse & repeat.

              2. Casual Gaming (or as I like to call it, gaming for dummies) is being pushed by everyone thanks mostly to the Wii. Now casual gaming isn't all bad if you like easy pick up and play side scrolling shooters or puzzle games, but serious "hardcore" gamers like ourselves who truly care about games find this trend someone uncomfortable. You do see games like Rockband and Guitar Hero that probably won't have the same benefit being on pc as they do on the console (kinda hard to get a chick infront of a computer to play Guitar Hero). If developers are putting effort into games that take shorter time to make, then gaming will become stagnant. Developers will find innovative ways to create games and such, console/pc hardware won't be pushed as much.

              3. DLC (Downloadable Content) is the new rave these days. How to make a 60 dollar game worth more....well....add addtional levels, weapons, skins, models, cars, music, and charge 2-10 dollars depending on the content. DLC is basically won't the mod community has been doing for years except now the actually developers wont' their "additional" share. I think DLC is bad for modding communities as it puts less pressure on developers to release modding tools to the public when they can easily satsify the gamers need with a 5 dollar map pack. DLC is more prevelant on console than pc's which is where the huge shift in development is going.

@ Tommie - You're correct, but now consoles (at least the X360 AND PS3) are pushing for digital distribution ie HD movies, games, music ETC over their proprietary networks xboxlive and psn. You gotta be have a hd to store all that stuff. Now getting a bigger hd and such won't matter cause those consoles are to last a few years anyways, until the next next gen console is around corner (which we should here someting within the next 12-18 months from microsoft).

If you saw the latest NPD numbers, the Wii/DS is kicking ***, SSBM sold 2.3 million copies in march! COD4 has sold 9 million units across mutliplatforms (go go multiplatform game releases), and the ps2 refuses to die.

Re: TGN's Big Releases of 08' Top 10 List

Considering the notion that ever since 2005, only utter crap has been released on Personal Computers, I dont mind gaming shifting to consoles more and more. If it is all just a big conspiracy, a systematic shutdown of oxygen for PC gamers, then let it be. Fact remains that at least in 5-7 years, noone will touch PC online gaming, which is what essentially were here for. PC online games. Consoles are perfect for offline games and they are dominating the area. If I had to choose between playing Gran Turismo on my couch and behind a screen, guess which one Id choose. Its stupid to fight against something that is already established itsself and works perfectly fine. Youre being catered your own food, stick to it, noones going to be touching it.

Besides, economy works like this, nothing you can do about it. Were in a low-time of online games on PC, have been for 3 years now. It works in waves, we have peaks and bottoms, and if this is the bottom, what will follow? Thats right, a peak.

For the most part, the list is VERY accurate, and you were wise not to put them in numerical order because GOW2 nor GTA would be in the top. However, games like Haze and Brothers in Arms are a non-factor, both being expelled from the list by already available and better competition. Battlefield: Bad Company will have to do just a tad more PR because frankly, none of my buddies in RE forums (avid console MP online gamers), have any idea what it is. And they are generally very well informed of all games.

As for Spore, watch for another Black and White.

I was a bit shocked when i didnt see BF:H or especially Far Cry 2 which has been long awaited. I also dont think GoW2 will actually get released till early 2009 due to a push back but otherwise good list and well done.

There was a few other games I had in my 1st list that many of you did list. There was many other games that I had wanted to include but due to the fact that there was no idea of any sort of release date I couldn't exactly put them in a '2008' release list. yea i know release dates get moved, but I went off of current information out there.

Someone said there's a lot of sequels, well yes they always tend to be 'big' games. Just because of the name it's self and its past popularity.

And I am guilty of the past 3 weeks I been driving to Walmart to play Guitar Hero on a ps2 and a flatscreen they just hooked up. :p

There's not room for everything only 10 spots. I looked into this game when I did my research, but I felt it didn't deserve a top 10 spot. Yes, most of the Turtle Rock/Vavle/Steam games do get a big following, and it will probably be a game that gets a good following, especially from the steam community.

Well, we are definately in a season of change. From a personal perspective, I'm a little bitter because I invested in PC hardware to be only entertained by a few titles.

I thought ET:QW would be great for pubbing and as a tournament-based game. I thought Bioshock would have a MP component. I hoped Crysis would run better and be a better MP game. I was counting on FFoW to be the next Big Thing. All were disappointing and did not spawn communities.

While TF2 is very fun and CoD4 totally caught me up with its very well balanced, fast and furious game play, they aren't great "team play" games. You can do very well "lone wolfing it".

I'm into MP gaming because of the team play. IMO most console games are not geared for that, so I'm not real interested. I'm a PC gamer because at best, it is a different level of gaming. Unfortunately, that is a hard thing to find these days.

I've been getting my frag on by playing co-op AI-X mod for BF2 with some dudes from these forums. Some new content should be releasing for BF2142, too. And Heroes is due out in a few months.

                                So, there's reason for hope.
