Re: Newly Released Battlefield 2142 Video

Let's just sit back and watch EA take a bath on Armoured Fury. If they are trying to get 2142 out when indicated, no one will be interested in paying for another booster pack when a whole new game is just around the corner.

They are not just shooting themselves in the foot, they are taking out most of their leg.

funny about the release game, they've abandoned bf2 like bfv and now going for new game. very different than bf42. i liked bf42 better. would have been better for them to redo bf42/bfv using bf2 engine.

Re: Newly Released Battlefield 2142 Video

I love the Battlefield series- don't get me wrong. But mechs and invisibility, thats not Battlefield. That is Quake, Tribes, Unreal, etc. I just wish they wouldn't screw with my Battlefield Series. I love the historical and modern eras, but this future stuff just seems silly. Leave that up to other companies and give me some quality modern/historical shooter EA/DICE.

Found some proof for those who don't believe it:

And a summary of the PC Gamer article:
"It's official, BF2142 has been in development for awhile and the video shown along time ago of a mech in a futuristic city was the new game. It's being made by Dice Sweden and is scheduled for release in 2006. IMPORTANT! The game IS using the SAME core engine as Battlefield 2.

There will be two factions, American-European Alliance (Americas and most of Europe) and the Pan Asian Coalition (Russia, the middle-east, and India). These two factions are fighting over control of the only hospitable places left on Earth after the polar ice caps melt, covering 75% of the world in an ice age.

Apparently each base class will have two subclasses to choose from, such as support going engineer or medic. And you can develop the class "RPG style" as you progress, with a more extensive ranking system like BF2's.

Snipers and spec-ops are two paths to take in the "recon" class. There appears to be two sniper rifles. They have a cloaking ability that makes them appear like a blurry blob running around (when moving), when cloaked they are almost invisible. One of the branches carries tracking bugs they can plant on/near things which will put some kind of target on those enemies, and the article mentioned some weapons will automatically track/follow that target. They also get EMP grenades disabling vehicles and binding players.

Assault didn't get revealed too much except they have "badass guns", and the secondary fire on them launches proximity grenades (unless it hits someone/thing then it blows up).

Support you can choose from engineer or medic. Nothing revealed about medic, but engineers will have drones they can deploy which will spot enemy targets and attack with some light firepower, but it's made clear that it is a very loud obvious device that will attract attention to you. Also they will have access to 3-4 types of mines.

Anti-tank had really no info about it at all. PCG guessed the branches are anti-air and anti-ground vehicle, and their rockets might seek.

There are weapons still on Dice's drawing board such as a vehicle mounted railgun. APC's are equipped with emp weapons to help deploy under enemy fire, and have "mysterious hatches that might be used for experimental weaponry", perhaps customizable turrets or emplacements. The picture of the APC shows side mounted turrets and a top turret, with 4 little hatch-like things with logos that appear to be some kind of buildable area.

Infantry wear special uniforms that will allow for different abilities (recon has cloak).

Rewards will be given for excellent squadwork, and staying in the squad each map will have benefits.

Squad leaders will now deploy special beacons to allow squad members to respawn by him, so the leader will be able to join the fight while teammates are respawning unlike BF2. But the beacon can be destroyed, or camped until it's naturally destroyed.

New physics are being added to allow for more versatility with animations and such like the mech walking. They can also be knocked over in "extreme circumstances". It will also crush players.

New mines include the "chaser mine" which will be planted until a nearby vehicle drives by, at which point it will hover after it.

There are sticky-bomb like explosives for the recon.

Hovercraft-like things (think HK's from Terminator) will replace helicopters, and there will be futuristic fighter jets but Dice is keeping those under wraps.

The interface is being overhauled completely. Buddy list is being implemented that will allow you to join the server any buddy is in. Simplified menu is replacing the cluttery old menu. Also map loading times are being reduced.

Parachutes are being replaced with something Dice has not commented on. They did say though that they are not jetpacks. So it's something else.

Night vision/grappling hooks will probably show up in the game, they are thinking of importing expansion pack features into their game but they aren't sure what to do.

Co-op with your friends is going to be a complete new game mode, against an AI team.

There's another mystery game mode they are keeping under wraps but PCG is guessing it's an entirely air game mode (odd!).

Apparently the game was in a pre-alpha stage when PCG played the game but they said it should be out by the end of this year and the game will be displayed for sure at E3."

The article does make it sound kind of cool. I know I'm probably going to cave in and buy it

Another Battlefield title so soon! It's got BF:V written all over it, although I quite liked that so will probably end up buying BF2142 aswell. I doubt some of the stuff shown or printed will make the game though, tends to be the case so far.

We'll have to wait and see.

Also notice TotalBF2142.com has been registered, wasting no time on that one.

Be nice if they'd done this in BF2.

A lot of the features sound very similar to ones we've heard of being implemented in Quake Wars. If everything in that article turns out to be true (multiple game modes, released this year) then Quake Wars has serious competition.

I wonder if this is being produced by Dice Canada...

Either way this really doesn't look that exciting, to be honest I don't like the move Dice has taken away from the WW2 theme. The great thing about BF1942 was the huge vehicles and variety of maps, so far neither BFV or BF2 have been able to live up to that. Maybe if Dice aim to have some big vehicles and a bigger variety of maps, this game will be interesting. If Dice innovate for the first time since BF1942 instead of continuing to stagnate, then we may have something interesting to look forward to. If not then this series is no better off than MoH, CoD or Halo - the first games were innovative, or interesting, the ones that followed were the same old crap.

and since its DICE/EA around 1/2 of those features will make it into the game, and the 1/2 that is cut will be all the cool stuff.

plus it will require 4gb of RAM to run without hitching every couple seconds and even if you do drop enough money to buy the best hardware around it will still lag and play like ****.

Actually this vid is less impressive than I hoped it would be. For this type of game, QuakeWars still seems like it will be top.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, but with BF2 etc. DICE/EA had a niche... but now their trying to take on the likes of QuakeWars and UT 2007, on homeground, so to speak... and this genre is so overpopulated anyways.

As someone else mentioned, the invisibility looks a bit dodge and I find the mechs looked a bit lackluster... all squared off and stuff. Seemed nothing out of the extraordinary.

Further a release date of 2006 makes me think that their gunna run this on the current BF2 engine, or a slightly upgraded version...
From that vid, I'd say I'd skip this one for either of the games mentioned above that have roots in the sci-fi genre and are both using new engines and ideas.
This does just feel like a BF2 mod or boosterpack

I'm all done handing my cash to EA for now. Bought BF2, SF2 and EF (and feel a bit cheated tbh)... and I still don't have a bug free game after having spent double the cash on this franchise already, than I have on most my other games.
