Brink Dedicated Server FAQ and Steam Pre-load

Bethesda has put up a short but important FAQ for Brink dedicated servers.

What is the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server?
The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server allows anyone to run multiplayer servers for the PC version of Brink. As the server is standalone, it does not require a full version of Brink to be installed and is completely free.

Where will I be able to get the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server?
The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server will be available for download via Steam prior to release. Once the server is available, you can simply browse to the Tools tab in your Steam client and grab it from there.

Will I be able to run several instances of the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server on a single machine?
Yes. The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server comes with several pre-made bat files that automatically define different ports for each instance. It’s also possible for you to set your own, custom ports.

In terms of available game options, how customizable will the Brink Standalone Dedicated Server be?
The Brink Standalone Dedicated Server includes several different game configuration files covering all of the regular game modes, including campaign, stopwatch, objective, and co-op challenges. In addition, there are a variety of server-side commands available that allow you to further customize your server, including team sizes, time limits and overtime, warm-up rules, friendly fire, voice chat, availability of Command Post buffs, rank restrictions, number of bots, and password.

I represent a Game Server Provider. How can my company offer servers for Brink?
Easy! Once the Standalone Dedicated Server is available on Steam, you’ll be able to start getting Brink game servers up for your customers. We’re currently aiming to have the server files available before release so you’ll be all set when the game comes out.

Also of note from their FAQ blog entry is the fact that a pre-load on Steam will be forthcoming prior to the game's release.

Re: Brink Dedicated Server FAQ and Steam Pre-load

Finally... Dedicated servers the way I like it. I didn't like the new idea of exclusively paying for hosts to make your own games if you have enough bandwidth, and an extra computer that can handle it (or if you want games with few people in it). Don't get me wrong, I don't hate professional companies that offer them (otherwise I'm being an ignoramus for trolling on the wrong turf - TGN), I just want the choice of both options like the old days. I appreciate the dedicated server files being released to the public for free.

I fully agree with K-16 about being about to get dedicated servers the way we use to get them in the old. So many companies cut the cost and drop dedicated server support for the clients because they feel that it is not needed. This is one the few company, and valve of that nature also that still offer dedicated servers and anyone the ability to host them without charge. GSP are fine for those who don't have to tech knowledge/time to waste on setting them up, but when you want real performance and control dedicated servers are the only way you are going to be able to get that. I'm going to stay out of the topic of GSP because they are a necessary evil of the world and they are only just another business trying to make it in the market, can't blame them.

Any who; I look forward to be able to rip about the dedicated server and see what abilities it has in store. Like they said it is like their other dedicated server in the past, admin/other functionality should be easy to make use of.
