Alien Swarm & Source SDK Arrive on Monday for FREE

Two years ago Valve picked up the mod team of the popular Alien Swarm mod for UT 2004. Since then, the game has been ported over to the Source engine and with it comes a completely free release of the redone game through Steam!

On Monday, July 19th Alien Swarm is going to be released for free via Steam.

In addition to the game, Valve will also release the complete code base for Alien Swarm. This includes updates to the Source engine SDK and full Steamworks integration. If you’ve ever thought about developing a mod on the Source engine with Steamworks, this release provides more insight and examples for using Steamworks in game production.

For more information on the top-down shooter, check out the Alien Swarm website!

It's great to have another free game, but the main thing I like about this news is flat out explaining why they're giving this away for free; it's marketing without the conspiracy bull$#!t which is a bit refreshing to me. I mean yeah it's playable, but its intention is similar to Lost Coast where the purpose is to show off VALVe's technologies and services. Only part I'm wondering about is whether or not VALVe will start charging licensing fees to use Steamworks the day they have the entire industry at the palm of their hands.
