    Half-Life 2 on Mac OS X - May 26, 2010

Unless they have made some radical changes to HL2, I'm not sure releasing it this late to work on the Mac OS is going to do anything worth all this attention. The game itself is soo old that even Mac guys have probably had the chance to play and finish the game by now (through friends or on a console).

The good news is what the engine brings. A lot of popular games are based on it (yes I can say that like it is fact, this was my dedicated CS news and mod source). :3

More interesting is the possibility that they get Steam going well on Linux based OSes. Mainstream Gaming on the alternative to Windows. Microsoft is not going to be happy about this.

There's a remote possibility that this Mac release means they updated HL2 to a newer build of the Source engine, and many PC users are hoping this also means it will be updated on the PC as well (like how CS is being updated), complete with HDR, better visuals, achievements, etc.

Guess we'll have to wait and see though.

I'm impressed that they found a way to enter the market for Mac OS X. I'm not just saying having their games ported, because if that was the case, Epic Games beat them a long time ago with Unreal Tournament, as an example. I'm talking about being a computer software publisher for various games that Mac OS X users either didn't notice, or didn't have available to them. I imagine nobody in the industry would've thought to create a market by developing a portal for games made by both first and third parties. Now I can imagine Mac OS X games are better exposed, and developers/publishers will see the market VALVe developed, creating a possible chance for more platform choices. And VALVe benefits from this all simply because they gained the first-movers advantage. I feel pretty stupid for not realizing the way to take advantage of a poorly tapped market that has been around for years, is a rather simple solution. Create a portal, and create the market. D'oh!

As for Linux... I assume the same applies to Linux users, though I think there were more software options than Mac OS X users. I suppose by software I actually meant computer games during this entire post, but I'm not sure if VALVe will decide to publish other genres through Steam in the future.
