Is Activision Going to Nickle and Dime Call of Duty Fans?

If their recent statements hold any water, Activision is ready to give Call of Duty players more micro-transaction opportunities than they could possibly wrap their minds around.

Taking a cue from the Blizzard model of online paid content, Activision opens up about its future ideas for the Call of Duty series.
"It's definitely an aspiration that we see potential in, particularly as we look at different business models to monetize the online gameplay," said Tippl. "There's good knowledge exchange happening between the Blizzard folks and our online guys."

"We have great experience also on Call of Duty with the success we had on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. A lot of that knowledge is getting actually built into the Battle.Net platform and the design of that," he added. "I think it's been mutually beneficial, and you should expect us to test and ultimately launch additional online monetization models of some of some of our biggest franchises like Call of Duty."

Tippl added there is a demand from its core fanbase willing to pay for additional services and content.

"Our gamers are telling us there's lots of services and innovation they would like to see that they're not getting yet. From what we see so far, additional content, as well as all the services Blizzard is offering, is that there is demand from the core gamers to pay up for that," Tipple explained.
These comments come after an official poll was conducted asking if people were interested in a subscription service that gives "additional multiplayer and gameplay enhancements" for upcoming Call of Duty titles.

This certainly seems to indicate that future CoD titles will give premium content and potential gameplay bonuses to those who fork over the cash. There's no saying how this may impact the balance of gameplay. It also indicates that a potential model is in the works for a "pay to play" format to the Call of Duty franchise.

Nothing is set in stone yet, but Activision is already charging an extra $10 on the PC version and will have DLC on the PC that requires a payment. As it currently stands, it does not seem as though these potential payment plans are too far fetched of an idea. We'll just have to wait and see for now.

Oh they'll make it happen. Just make sure you upgrade yourself to Veteran status for a small fee.

It was painfully obvious that they where going to do this, that's the whole reason IWnet was made, for Paid DLC in mind.

Nothing about IWnet was made to "better the player experience" at all.

welcome to the new face of video games boys. vote with your wallets and stop buying shit for companies that are shit.

It's the new trend of online gaming. Gaming isn't just for teenagers anymore.
Nowadays, men and women aged from 25 to 55 have taken over the market share and want (and can) to pay for customization, etc.

bullshit we want to pay for stuff that used to be free.

The allure in buying at 60 dollar game should be that down the road, the game will receive updates and new content that the community creates, or is given.

NOT forced to buy meager map pack updates, all while at the same time the community is not allowed to create content.

Don't worry too much. This sort of thing works fine for PS3. Little Big Planet DLC is either stickers in game or new outfits. Killzone2 stuff is new levels. There's never any stuff for any game that gives you an advantage over other players. I can't think of any shooter where you can only buy guns; there won't be anything like "only paying players get AWPs".

Unless of course Activision are going to give players the finger.....again. Let's hope it's just silly outfits, gune skins and maps.

This IS Activision we're talking about here. The same company that charged PC gamers an extra $10 for the PC version just because they could. Don't put anything past them.
