Infinity Ward Responds to PC Fans, Says Very Little

Community contributor, blackops7799, brought to our attention the fact that Infinity Ward responded to the backlash about the lack of dedicated server support on the PC version of Modern Warfare 2. Jason West and Vince Zampella both chime in on their decision to scrap dedicated server support.
"We're just prioritizing the player experience above the modders and the tuners," says West. He points toward the mounting feedback IW has received from PC fans of Modern Warfare who couldn't find a decent server to play on between all of the cheaters, the insular communities, and huge skill level disparities that the original game's community fractured into. "We thought maybe it would be cool if the fans could play the game," he laughs.

IW says that gameplay concerns for the majority of MW2 players are the overriding reasons for the decision. Zampella downplays the obvious piracy prevention angle (IW has cited numbers of people online playing illegal copies of Modern Warfare up to 60 percent). "The Steam stuff helps with the piracy. I don't know that the matchmaking stuff does," he notes. West takes a shot at the motives behind some of the outrage, noting that there's money to made by selling dedicated servers and adspace on them: "It's a little dubious. Some of the people complaining are complaining with their pocketbook."

Again and again during our conversation, West and Zampella hammer the point that hardcore PC players lose very little to this change relative to the returns that casual to moderate fans will see. Clans can set up private matches to do their training or what have you; all they lose is the ability to customize the game on a deeper level with mods and such. Infinity Ward sees the addition of solid matchmaking and community support like IW-run tournaments to the PC as a huge win, and not something that could be done under the old system.

It's interesting to note that the points brought up really don't address much of anything in the way of what people are complaining about. Check out the rest of the article over at Game Informer.

It doesn't help to have some of these PC guys saying/typing ridiculous barely English responses that are threatening.

However, this is just laughable and so are their responses. They didn't remotely respond to any of the legitimate complaints.

What a slap in the face. I have $10,000 worth of hardware sitting in my garage that I bought in anticipation of increased gameserver demand. They drop the info that there won't be any demand an hour and a half into some webcast, THREE WEEKS before launch. When were they planning to break this news to the people who make a living off this market?

Was I some sort of idiot to assume that one of the biggest FPS franchises in PC gaming history would just scrap this function out of the blue?

A server owned by a small clan can be as thoroughly moderated as any other server can be, and they don't need to take away dedicated servers to use VAC, so I don't see how cheating is at all relevant to the dedicated server arguement.

I also don't see why matchmaking can't take place in parallel with dedicated servers. You don't need to scrap dedicated servers from the game entirely in order to allow for 'match-making'.

Piracy; Again, you don't need to scrap dedicated game servers from the game in order to move to Steam. Moreover, Steam is not a digital rights management solution. It's digital distribution, so it's not going to do a ton in the way of preventing piracy.

I don't know what Infinity Ward doesn't get about the whole 'customizing/tweaking' deal. There's a reason why 'no-special-order' restaurants can't compete with the 'made to/cooked to order' restaurants; You can't please everybody with any one single order, so it's in your best interest to let customers special order. The same concept applies to games and game servers. Not everybody wants the same thing, and restricting all gamers in the community to the same servers with the same content and the same rules is like trying to make everybody eat their burgers with the same toppings and the same condiments. It's not gonna work.

Man I'm in the same boat as you. My boss was so mad when we read this news because our idea got shot down and now looking for new servers to host. Not so much the money from it, but the community status of hosting...
And another friend of mine and I got screwed because we wanted to dev. tools\mods with this game, and well its a slap to the face that we can't, and most likely if we ever can won't be anytime soon on IW bullshit list of priories.

Even MyIS is screwed from this. And all things considered, Zips is doing a rather swell job at not overstepping his bounds of bias. After remembering the now screwed contest, I just realized Infinity Ward isn't insulted enough in the news posts that cover this surprise (hard to say if this counts as controversy if it's a one-sided fight).

Noted, even before you posted that. I am almost confused that your Twitter page also lacks bias against Infinity Ward. Almost that is... But uh, noted.
