Let me get this off my head

I wouldn't mind ads if as ealier people said, were much more integrated into the map - but this would have to be only if Valve would update 1.6 more often. Now since 1.6 sales obviously are no more, they plan to suck every ounce of revenue they can get from their platform. Why not ads BEFORE we connect, and not fucking in game?

Update 1.6.....add some more shit, improve graphics, and fix steam friends, then valve's efforts would be worth it.

I'd rather be seeing ads then paying per month for steam (OMFG NO) running their servers must cost a lot. But comon, fix your client! Make amends, build it and optimize it, friends still doesn't work! Skin in vista sucks! Offline mode is a joke!

There still lazy fat bitches in my book though.

Yeah, the Steam 'loading' screen was supposed to have ads, now it just says what content server you're on, or the server you're connecting to can put a banner there if they know how.

Ads there, I almost wouldn't mind (since I'm usually AFK while loading anyway, ha ha).

Steam is free. Steam can have ads all it wants. CS was not free. Ads do not belong.

Wow, what eyesores. Does Valve realize what this cash grab is going to cost? They've got one enraged community on their hands.

This is the most blatant disregard of player interest I have ever seen from any company. At least EA told players when they bought the game that there would be ads in BF2142. This feature that Valve is beta testing isn't something that players are interested in - no player is EXCITED to see ads coming into the game - either they don't care, or they hate the idea. There's a rather large amount of the latter.

With such a delicate subject as in-game ads, it's hard to believe that Valve would put out a beta that's far worse than the final version. I see no reason for the ads to change in size, location, or general appearance (ie, decals placed half-assed on the map).

Exactly! I don't see why Steam is ad free, while games that people have PAID FOR are starting to be ad venues. Valve is pretty retarded, I agree.

Ads in games that were bought will mean less people will recommend the game to friends, which means less sales, which ultimately means no money for VALVe. Are they TRYING to kill 1.6?

1.6 is a dieing breed... it's past its prime. I doubt Valve will be hurting much at all if people stopped buying CS1.6.

If people stopped buying CS1.6? No, they wouldn't hurt.

If people stopped PLAYING 1.6, and Valve became known as the worst game making company ever, known to intentionally screw over its customers whenever possible because they cared more about dollar signs than consumers, the company that ground the most-played online video game into the dirt, and their reputation turned into a black hole...

That would make them hurt. It better.

Hutz put it well. There is nobody in favor of this. There are people who don't care, who don't think it'll be that big a deal, and there's a huge amount of people who hate the idea completely.

The only people in favor of the idea are the ones reaping money from it. Notice how none of those people would qualify as consumers?

The only saving grace depends on how avoidable the ads are. If they can be avoided simply by having alternate versions of the maps and never looking at the scoreboard, then people are still going to play. If they can be avoided by installing a 'hack' that disables them, you're going to see a lot of people VAC banned, which guarantees that they stop playing CS (at least on VAC-enabled servers). If there's server-side hacks of the sort, you'll probably see a lot of that.

Again, it depends on how avoidable they are. If Valve makes an effort to make them unavoidable and intrusive, if they go so far as to make them appear on custom maps (somehow), the game is basically dead.

I'll agree CS 1.6 is past its prime, but it's nowhere near dead...unless Valve makes it so.

Valve has simply lost touch with what players want. Plain and simple. Everything is directly about the bottom line, even though fostering an active community THAT DOESN'T HATE YOU is the best for that bottom line, at least in the long run. Basically, you want the fanboys. Otherwise, you're competing on equal ground with other game developers.

They've willingly isolated themselves from a significant percentage of those fanboys. I'm also willing to bet that they've lost a significant number of future sales just by showing how greedy they are.

It's past its prime with the game-hopping mass market, but who really gives a shit about them? The game is still the most popular shooter for hardcore gamers and competitive players. Yes, it's far more popular than Source still.

It's a timeless game, like Starcraft. Just because a bunch of game hoppers have forgotten about it doesn't mean that real gamers (the ones who inevitably drive a game's popularity) have dropped it.

If they are going to have it like this at least it should be optional for servers, and they really ought to share a great % of the profit with serveradmins and perhaps players. Perhaps add points you get for watching or hosting ads, points that you later can purchase games for.

Gamers should be getting SOMETHING out of it... as it is now, Valve is making a cash grab at the expense of players and not offering anything in return.

The worst part is, Valve will be tricking naive kids into putting ads in their servers. I don't see the older players my age ready to put up with this crap.

I mean, kids are stupid right Valve? Why not turn them into advertising whore? Hell, they will prob fall sway to the tricks you are turning with them, they'll pay for what they [Valve indirectly] whore themselves! IT'S WIN WIN!!!!

(it's also pathetic, but I guess most programmers have this dream; to make a great product, earn tons of respect, create a huge community, and then DASH it all away in favor of a quick money fix! INGENIOUS!)

Keep in mind that it's not just CS 1.6 that Valve has harmed with this bizarre act of self-immolation. They have fostered distrust for all Steam games.

I know I will be very wary before I click the "purchase" button on a Steam-supplied game in the future. I will pause to reflect that I don't have a static copy of the game on my hard drive, but a bundle of dynamic content that Valve controls and updates through Steam, and can change at any time. When they have built up a community of paying customers for a game, they will happily turn on that community and exploit them as an advertising market to line their own pockets, and there is nothing I can do about it at that point. They already have my money, and the copy of the game on my computer has updated on its own, so I can't continue to use the old version. It's a done deal at that point, and the only one happy with the situation is Valve. The community won't like the ads, and the advertisers will be wasting their money.

This doesn't strike me as a very good move for the Steam platform at all. Chalk up another software delivery mechanism that looked promising on paper but was done in by greed.

I'll be okay with in-game advertisements as soon as we start getting our games for free. That's fair.

Free games mean that all of the cheating faggots out there will have hundreds of accounts at no extra cost...

So cant you back up the current default maps, rename them like de_dust2_original and bingo no ads. Or am I mistaken?

Because I cannot see how they plan to add Ad's into custom made maps.
The advertisements will not affect any custom maps, fortunately- tried and true...

and the map ads are server-side, so don't bother saving your current maps, unless you have your own server- then get rid of the ads by saving the current maps to your server now...

Just remember, Valve had no intentions to use ads in games when they had Sierra act as their publisher. (In fact, when the Subway ads came onto de_dust, they wanted them off...) However, when Valve hooked up w/ EA (very notorious for adding crap to games), let's say I'm not surprised this is happening...
