Steam News Update - August 11th

Stop the presses, we have Counter-Strike: Source news! Enough of my rambling, read on for the news update!
Soon, we'll be releasing the first in a series of updates to Counter-Strike: Source which will be focused on moving the core Counter-Strike gameplay forward.

The first update will include an updated version of the map Train, which will feature an HDR lighting pass, some minor layout changes, and a number of small bugfixes.

The second facet of this release will be a completely reworked radar system. There will be a significant change to the aesthetics of the radar, but there are also some fairly significant gameplay ramifications to the new system. One example: when you look directly at an enemy for a long enough time for their name to appear on your screen, everyone on your team will be able to see that enemy in the radar. We're planning on releasing this first update in about two weeks.

    HDR in Train

I can't help but wonder if there will be a lot more involved in these updates besides the two changes listed. The remaining two player models seem to have disappeared. I'm sort of wondering what happened to that map of Cliffe's that he mentioned some time ago on the Steam forums. Time will tell, of course, if Valve has a few other tricks up their sleeves. However, that's enough nit-picking from me. Any CS: Source news, is good news, and I'm sure others will agree.

OMG! WE'VE FINALLY GOT OUR WISH!

I seriously hope they finish HDR on the rest of the maps :P

I'm starting to think they read CSN news comments. o.o

Yeah, this radar sounds like an interesting new gameplay tactic, but it won't show up on radar TOO long will it? I mean it kind of adds another excuse to wallhackers saying, "DUDE, I saw you on my radar..."

          He'll probably have wet dreams.

Edit: Oh yeah, another thing: VALVe is really good at hiding their news for a while. TF2, for example.

Another "lets make something while we wait for the next HL2 episode build to compile" update.

to be honest I don't mind cs:s being abandoned if their people can make TF2 a better game.

re-worked train hey spose it cant get any worse but sounds good, I'm not sure about the new radar to me it could lead to radar hackers just using it as an excuse but I dont know how it full will work yet so I wont speculate.

Wish valve would just listen to me and update sourcetv 100% already :)

anyway WOOT IM HAPPY I love css news!!!!

Least I know the games not dead and they are going to finally fix gameplay :)

Don't even start that pointless arguement here.

Sweet making the radar more usefull is always a good thing. Lets hope they are still keeping some changes secret, cause lets face it we all want more than that. :) It seems hard for them to actually change something without a backlash from people who can't handle change, but i say good for them and I hope there are more changes in the works.

How would that be an argument and not a discussion. If you are spotted and fall back now you do not have this ability that we used to have - This ability is the ability to "hide" from your enemies - This changes the game, might make it more exciting in a pub, but for any competitive league it is a huge change at the wrong time.

Improved radar sounds interesting, but only because the "one example" mentioned should pave the way for more features. I'm not too sure on the difference this radar tagging will make, the enemy isn't going to appear on the team's radar for long to be of too much help really is it? Still, it'll save a voice com shout maybe.

I like train, and I'm sure the HDR will make it look nicer. But is that all? I'd rather see new maps "moving the core counter-strike gameplay further" instead of just sexed up ones.

only problem from my POV is that they should be fixing bugs before adding.... BUGS, everytime they add something the create more problems but hey if it works im all for it and frankly who cares what cal thinks they can stick to 1.6 coz CSS is coming bigger and better.

Nobody knows how the new radar works exactly yet. It could last for as long as you have the crosshairs over someone and gone the next second. Until anyone sees it in action, why complain?

This update is going to provide me with hours of entertainment! Not from playing the game, but from reading all the posts from the angry little CAL players who think they're the be-all end-all of cs on the steam forums!
