Sometimes I wonder if these Steam haters hate Steam because of VAC...

Can't forget the Automatic Update part which just might Automatically ban them. Or maybe they just have no common sense. At least VALVe offers you games with an update service to prevent cheating, spoofing, fraud, viruses, etc. Downloading patches is quite unreliable due to searching for mirrors which may be false and end up giving you a virsus or 2. Automatic Updates come from the right place and on schedule keeping your computer and privacy safe. Complaining about a priviledge is pointless

    • Everytime I load Counter-Strike 1.6, I'm on the menu and it says I have 1 fps (Assuming it's a bug because surely my video card is good enough to handle the game menu). By the time I get into game, I still have 1-5 fps and it's not worth playing. It's only a problem with CS 1.6.
    • CS problem, not Steam.
    • Numerous times have I been disconnected due to a windows error with hl2.exe.
    • HL2 problem, not Steam.
    • Friends of course still doesn't work.
    • This isn't a bug, it's been shut down until they put it up again.
    • Just last week, when I loaded any Steam game I went right to a black screen which quickly exited.
    • Most likely a problem on your end. I'm no programmer, but it doesnt sound logical for a launching app like Steam to fuck up games that run on different engines in the same way. So either you did something really retarded to make both HL and HL2 not run, or you're just bullshitting.

      Bullshitting seems likely.

Whatever pal. The only thing I want from Valve is CS. Why should they force us to install all this other crap just to play one game? I have no choice but to install that crap so I can play it.
23mb. And if you didn't have Steam, you'd be forced to manually install a ton of other updates to play with other people. So if your complaining about having to download other things, Steam is doing you a favor.
You would rather have automatic updates? As if it was ever hard to find the patches? Real tough!
Even if it's not difficult to find the updates, automatic updates, by their nature, are definitely easier, so who wouldn't rather have them? Updates for the games I play delivered right to me without having to do any searching? FUCK THAT, it's too convenient!!
Give me a break... Personally, I like to choose what gets installed on my computer.
Then don't update your games, you don't have to. And if it's such a huge deal, hey, uninstall Steam. Problem solved.
Preloading? It takes much less time to install a game from CD's. I see no benefit.
It's for those of us that buy the games online. I had the bronze HL2 package, so preloading DoD:S was a wise choice since I bought it the day it came out. And preloading is optional, so I hardly seem how you can complain about something you're not required to do.

Sometimes they do, and we get the inconvenience of a day or two of problems once or twice a year.
How do I get this automatic thing to work? I always have to right click on steam click exit then wait, then hit steam to load again. How to a turn of this automatic thing?

Kinda of like going to a web site or p2p and doing the same thing.

The funniest part about this ongoing thing about people bitching and whining about Source or CS or HL2 or Steam is that either:

          1) cry and whine all they want, but they still continue to use Steam/HL2/CS/etc.

          2) they don't use Steam/HL2/CS/etc. - and all they can find to do with their free time is cry and whine

If you don't like it, good for you. If you have to cry and whine about it on a forum every single time some new news comes out, then realize that the OS you're using has bugs, patches, and tweaks. The car that may be sitting outside your home has its problems here and there. The streets you drive on aren't marble smooth. The air you breathe isn't 100% contaminant free. The food you eat isn't completely pure.

And all you can do in the world is bitch and whine like a baby about a game that no one is forcing you to play except yourself. Jesus, get a life. Nothing in this world is perfect, especially you =P

Ok so you're saying quiting and restarting steam is equal to trying to find a website that doesnt require registration and that doesn't require you to wait in line for public downloads for more than an hour and then waiting for that download to happen and then finally installing the update.

How the hell does that make any sense?

Steam saves the environment. Less driving to and from malls to buy games.

I've actually played CS since the time when the M4 still had its scope and cs_docks was in its heyday.

And since I'm assuming your elitist attitude means you've been playing CS at least as long as I have, I'm sure you haven't forgotten how impossible it was to download the new beta releases for CS for at least two days post release. All the CS addicts hammered the mirrors and download pages, knocking them down or dropping download speeds to painful single digits. And even if you did manage to get ahold of the client update early, good luck finding an updated server to play on right away. Nighthawk outlines this phenomenon quite nicely above, if you had taken the time to read all the comments.

So no, your arguments are completely wrong. Updates via Steam are much MUCH smoother than they were before. And the updates are automatic in the sense that everytime you boot Steam you're going to to receive an update if necessary.

Well, I am obiviously in the minority here. So I won't keep arguing my case. However, for those of you who keep saying uninstall steam if you don't like it. I need it to play CS. Therefore I am stuck with it.

It would be rather silly of me to uninstall it when I run a website and CS:S server...

We are thinking about switching to Q4 when it comes out, so maybe then.

For the guys who like hard numbers, well, I did some checking to see just how massively bloated Steam really is. So, opening Explorer and checking out the statistics, this is what I found on my system.

                        Steam directory:

                        Size: 22.6 GB (24,337,590,566 bytes)

                        Contains: 41,468 Files, 2,752 Folders

                        SteamApps directory:

                        Size: 22.6 GB (24,313,434,383 bytes)

                        Contains: 41,034 Files, 2,715 Folders

Now, bust out calculator, do some subtraction, and this is what you get...

Net difference (ie, what everything that isn't a game is taking up):

                        Size: 23.0 MB (24,156,183 bytes)

                        Contains: 434 Files, 37 Folders

That's including a few custom skins as well. 23 megs of precious space. All of that could have been used to store... about 5 MP3s or something like that. If that doesn't make enough of a statement, let me put it like this: for my personal collection of Steam games, the actual Steam software takes up just under 1/100th of 1% of the total install.

Is it becoming clear yet why the arguments about Steam being this massively bloated horrible piece of software just sound silly to us? Under one one-hundredth of one percent!

Yeah, weekly updates have their ups and downs. Sometimes something comes out that doesn't work quite right, and they take it back (automatically, mind you) and re-release it in a couple of weeks when the bugs are worked out. The downside is that, in a sense, we play the part of the late beta testers, the final testing grounds to see if any unforeseen consequences occur. Sometimes they do, and we get the inconvenience of a day or two of problems once or twice a year.

In my mind, that's a small price to pay for regular updates, new content, fixes, etc -- all without any hassle. I wasn't a huge fan of Steam when it first came out, but it's matured to the point where I can't really make honest complaints about it.

One final thought: apparently some in our midst don't remember what update day was like when new versions of CS were coming out. Many of us often couldn't play for several days, because every server that dared host the file was instantly hammered by a mob of frustrated people trying to play. Even CSN, which was just featuring a plain text page filled with mirror links, and not the files themselves, got mercilessly pounded with hits.

Now updates go over so smoothly that we hardly take note of them much of the time. Same deal with preloading. Yes, I'll agree that loading the game from a CD is faster than pre-loading. However, preloading is far quicker than going to the local brick and mortar, trying to pick out the right game amongst all the other distractions, waiting in line to purchase the game, and bringing it back home.

It is a weak man's argument to bash convenience by calling it laziness. If everyone listened to arguments like that, nearly every technological advance that our history has seen would never have taken place. "You drive a car? Maybe you're just some fat-ass basement-dwelling computer-nerd that is too lazy to actually go outside and walk 40 miles every day..."
I wish you'd stop... You're really starting to turn me on

Steam was an incredible idea and I applaude Valve. Steam v3.0 looks very pleasing.

steam may take 23mb of hard disk space but after leaving it on for a while it takes around 70mb of RAM...

sometimes rapes your CPU as well for no reason doing nothing

                          wheres the point in that?

and when you said we've had around 50 updates, the updating tool in steam encourages them to release stuff that isnt completed or tested because they can update it again later.

steam are using Rapid Application Development, releasing it so quick then fixing it all the time because they have access to user comments and their patching system

crappy bloated piece of software that isnt needed :)

70MB out of a Gig? And if you were truly concerned about how much memory Steam is (or isn't) using, don't leave it running all the time. Simple, no?

Play any BF2 lately? They've had two patches thus far. One of them was rolled back, and the other was a patch just to fix the first one. It's also been months waiting for the 1.03 patch to address a mile long list of complaints from the BF2 community.

Had BF2 used a Steam delivery system those updates could have been near completion already, even with a few failed patches along the way, the fixes usually come within a few days to a week. That's a far cry from having to wait months to address all of those issues.

Steam doesnt really cause any problems for me, its a neat little compact way of valve saying "play our game this way so we work on it while you play." its fine as it already is and adding more toys to it will kill the simplicity thing which i dont like. they should leave it like it is, and fix friends or something. we dont need a whole new program.
