You, sir, are extremely pessimistic. Not all of their updates cause more problems. And you certainly can't think Steam is perfect as it is, right?
just recently they updated cs source.. and you can now see threw walls with dx7 enabled. ROFL

You guys are pretty dumb. xlokix, what bugs are you having with Steam?
Since I'm playing a non valve game at the moment, I'll give you some quick examples.

      • Everytime I load Counter-Strike 1.6, I'm on the menu and it says I have 1 fps (Assuming it's a bug because surely my video card is good enough to handle the game menu). By the time I get into game, I still have 1-5 fps and it's not worth playing. It's only a problem with CS 1.6.

      • Numerous times have I been disconnected due to a windows error with hl2.exe.

      • Friends of course still doesn't work.

      • Just last week, when I loaded any Steam game I went right to a black screen which quickly exited.

Those are the easiest ones to think of at the moment that have all happened within the last few weeks.

Odd... my friend in the same suite as me runs in DX7, and the objects in his game don't go invisible at any distance.

We've been on v2 for a while now. Actually we're already using some elements from v3 but I can't remember what all is in it.

I remember when friends worked so well. It would sign in and was so helpful for so long. It still doesnt make any sense to me how they screwed it up. Oh well I found xfire so no need for friends service in Steam. So I gather its a really complicated procedure to make a friends program /rolls eyes.

                  Thank you xfire :)

                    |azure| : Well, I'd rather have automatic updates than to manually find them and install them. It's a hassle. Plus, buying your games on Steam and then having them ready to play after preloading is a pretty good thing. If you don't like Steam, then don't play any of their games. Period. Whining doesn't get you anywhere in life.
Whatever pal. The only thing I want from Valve is CS. Why should they force us to install all this other crap just to play one game? I have no choice but to install that crap so I can play it.

You would rather have automatic updates? As if it was ever hard to find the patches? Real tough! Give me a break... Personally, I like to choose what gets installed on my computer.

Preloading? It takes much less time to install a game from CD's. I see no benefit.

Whining? I was merely posting opinions that were relevent to this news. That is what forum thread are for.

Maybe your just some fat ass basement dwelling computer nerd that is too lazy to actually go outside to a store and buy a game...

you see no benefit in having patches released bits at a time so you dont have to wait 6 months for 6 different maps? wow...

Well I guess every single person that's living on this planet that purchases products online must be a fat ass retard, right?

Thank you, though I am but a mere mortal, haha...

For the guys who like hard numbers, well, I did some checking to see just how massively bloated Steam really is. So, opening Explorer and checking out the statistics, this is what I found on my system.

                          Steam directory:

                          Size: 22.6 GB (24,337,590,566 bytes)

                          Contains: 41,468 Files, 2,752 Folders

                          SteamApps directory:

                          Size: 22.6 GB (24,313,434,383 bytes)

                          Contains: 41,034 Files, 2,715 Folders

Now, bust out calculator, do some subtraction, and this is what you get...

Net difference (ie, what everything that isn't a game is taking up):

                          Size: 23.0 MB (24,156,183 bytes)

                          Contains: 434 Files, 37 Folders

That's including a few custom skins as well. 23 megs of precious space. All of that could have been used to store... about 5 MP3s or something like that. If that doesn't make enough of a statement, let me put it like this: for my personal collection of Steam games, the actual Steam software takes up just under 1/100th of 1% of the total install.

Is it becoming clear yet why the arguments about Steam being this massively bloated horrible piece of software just sound silly to us? Under one one-hundredth of one percent!

Yeah, weekly updates have their ups and downs. Sometimes something comes out that doesn't work quite right, and they take it back (automatically, mind you) and re-release it in a couple of weeks when the bugs are worked out. The downside is that, in a sense, we play the part of the late beta testers, the final testing grounds to see if any unforeseen consequences occur. Sometimes they do, and we get the inconvenience of a day or two of problems once or twice a year.

In my mind, that's a small price to pay for regular updates, new content, fixes, etc -- all without any hassle. I wasn't a huge fan of Steam when it first came out, but it's matured to the point where I can't really make honest complaints about it.

One final thought: apparently some in our midst don't remember what update day was like when new versions of CS were coming out. Many of us often couldn't play for several days, because every server that dared host the file was instantly hammered by a mob of frustrated people trying to play. Even CSN, which was just featuring a plain text page filled with mirror links, and not the files themselves, got mercilessly pounded with hits.

Now updates go over so smoothly that we hardly take note of them much of the time. Same deal with preloading. Yes, I'll agree that loading the game from a CD is faster than pre-loading. However, preloading is far quicker than going to the local brick and mortar, trying to pick out the right game amongst all the other distractions, waiting in line to purchase the game, and bringing it back home.

It is a weak man's argument to bash convenience by calling it laziness. If everyone listened to arguments like that, nearly every technological advance that our history has seen would never have taken place. "You drive a car? Maybe you're just some fat-ass basement-dwelling computer-nerd that is too lazy to actually go outside and walk 40 miles every day..."

For those bitching about Steam, look on the bright side: at least it doesn't have ads for such a popular software *cough* Gamespy Arcade *cough*. It's simple and does the job, even though there are errors sometimes here and there.

Also, a good thing about buying games on Steam is that you don't need to worry about it being sold out. And azure, many people doesn't have a car. I don't like to take the bus for 45 minutes just to buy a game. It's a hassle. So stop thinking that people are lazy because they don't want to buy their games in stores.
