Could someone explain how that British rating system works? I have no idea. Is 15 the highest rating? Does a higher number mean more violence? I dont understand.
    age?

When it goes gold it means its being released.
            not necessarily.. *cough* cz...

going gold just means they've signed off on the final code that will be duplicated and distributed... final code or not, doesn't necessarily mean it'll be in your clammy hands next week.

The BBFC is the governments classifacation body. Most games either get an 18 (as in you have to be 18 to play it) or nothing at all. Maybe I'm wrong but I've never seen a game with a 15 (well the odd one) and definately not a 12 age rating, I'd say only the msot extreme games actually get rated here anyway- GTA etc. HL1 was never rated, most aren't.

If they say it's too graphic to be given an 18 certificate they wont allow it to be sold here, but it's a game and our censors are quite leniant so unless it features graphic penetrative sex...

Quoted for ridiculousness. Valve can't release HL2 through Steam until it is in stores by contract. Once it goes gold, it takes at least a couple of weeks to replicate the CDs, package everything, and ship the game. Not to mention that Vivendi gains nothing by rushing it to market. They most likely will wait for a "holiday release", somewhere between late November and mid-December. There is zero chance it will be released next week.

Ok, we'll see won't we. I don't see how everyone assumes the company has to announce their product has gone gold.

Well, given that this is one of the most anticipated games of all time, not to mention all of the delays the fans have had to deal with and the hard work that Valve has put into the production of HL2, I'm certain that they will be proud to make the gold announcement and give a release date when the game is actually final. They just delivered the fifth release candidate to Vivendi a couple of days ago, so the game isn't gold yet. They didn't secretly finish it and replicate it and hide it the the basements of EBs and Best Buys around the world to surprise everyone early.

I was wandering in the rain

                              Mask of life, feelin' insane

Swift and sudden fall from grace

                              Sunny days seem far away

                              Kremlin's shadow belittlin' me

Stalin's tomb won't let me be

On and on and on it came

Wish the rain would just let me
