Uhh, the Doom and Doom II storylines involved demons from hell invading Mars (and Earth in Doom II) and you have to kill them and fight your way to hell and cut it off at the source.

Doom III story is about genetic engineering gone wrong AND hell spilling over and all that shit. If it was a remake would it not have the same story and similar level layouts?
Yes, if it were a remake of the original. It's merely a "retelling of the Doom story." That's all it is.

Also, how's about laying off the whole Doom 3 debate? Not the right place for it.

ummmmmm no offense to pc gamer or anything...but does HL2 deserve a 96 without having standard dm?

i guess the single player and CS:S must've really made up for it...that or pc gamer is getting soft over the years =\

Half-Life was a cleverly retold Doom, in a way. It took the basic idea - "omg monsters!!!" - wrapped it up in a classic storytelling idiom - "Science has gone too far!" - and proceeded to bring in the element of a mysterious government presence that wants to either kill you (with troops) or watch your progress (the G-man.)

What I like about HL2 is that it's not a "retelling" of HL1 or whatever. It deals with consequences, some of which the player imagined, some of which they didn't, of what happened in HL1. The Doom 3 story isn't nearly creative enough to have that much going for it. You have to give HL credit for that.

I've said it before, but as far as cliches go, "aliens from another dimension" is infinitely better than "demons from Christian Hell."

I so don't get this. At all. The original Half-Life was CRITICIZED for not having anything other than Standard DM when it was first released. Now HL2 is being criticized for not including it?

If it wasn't intended to be in the game from the beginning, they can't justifiably take points off for not having it. Maybe if HLDM were promised then they could take points off, but in this case... It wouldn't be right.

yeah i guess so, since everybody and their brother wanted TF2 (when's that supposed to come out again ;P )

but i guess zips right, hldm wasn't promised, although i'm sure there are lot of ppl aching for physics gun action (i know i am)

guess i'm gonna have to wait for a mod, or later steam release =\

btw i actually do like hl and cs, but im an id software whore considering they have and always will make ground breaking fps games before anyone else.
Ground breaking like Quake 2 and 3? Like Doom 2 and 3?

I don't think there's really much room to left to be "ground breaking" in the FPS category. Any more games that happen to be ground breaking are all but guaranteed to not be from id. The last great game they were involved with was RTCW and last I heard they didn't even make the good part of the game(the multiplayer), correct?

Doom 3 has terrible lighting if they can't even light the facility properly without lowering your fps to its knees. Doom 3 was a long, expensive tech demo.

Not sure I catch your drift my dear anal change. Games aside, how is one cliche infinitely better than another? They both have plenty of fertile storytelling ground, it's just a matter of how good a story teller you are, isn't it? Or is it because you think aliens are more believeable than demons...?

Doom should be 40%, without the graphics that game would be the most despised sequel in video game history.
without the graphics... the graphics definately make the game and thats why i bought doom3, for the incredible graphics... i am buying HL2 for the story and the incredible physics its supposed to have (traptown video!).. anyways i agree with the 90% rating of doom3 cause of its bad AI, so hopefully i will agree with HL2 rating of 96%

The latter one, sorta. At least "aliens from another dimension" doesn't predispose that entire belief systems are wrong. Not that I'm saying that the game is proselytizing. More that it's just taking the easy way out. Where do they come from? Hell. Why are they evil? Because that's what they are, evil. It's like the people who design 80's metal album covers decided to make a game.

I think the real question we should be asking is why the hell the losers at PC Gamer have the final version of Half-Life 2.

Because they work for the biggest PC Game reviewing magazine out there. I'm sorry, that's not the real question we should be asking. You lose.

Thats like saying "ice is cold", then stating "look at that! ice WAS cold!"

                            :P

not making fun of you or anything though. I probably would have said the same thing if i almost correctly guessed the score half life 2 was going to get from a certain magazine.

Because lots of losers like you buy their magazine.

And another thing - at least you can reasonably "kill" aliens. Demons are what, some sort of animated flesh empowered by the souls of the damned, or something. You can kill that? With bullets?

And when you kill them, what, you're done? You've already established that there IS a Hell. Where are they going to go? Detroit?
