"I'm going to have to agree with the gameplay decision aspect of this. Grabbing a user mod to allow you to always have the flashlight on while criticizing the decision seems like a rather weak attempt to cover up a lack of proficiency when trying to play how the game was designed.
Sure, you might simply not appreciate the decision, but it comes across as someone who sucks trying to justify downloading a cheat. After that point, I really don't know how you can criticize the game, especially in the realm of "not being scary" or whatever."
I see where you're coming from but you miss the point. Trying to make the game "scary" or "more challenging" by artificially hampering your ability to interact logically and realistically is just lame, especially since you play some sort of "marine" who's supposed to be able to think on his feet, adopt, adapt and improve.
Far from cheating, using the common sense to strap your light to your weapon is simply rectifying the stupidity the designers apparently programmed into your character. Otherwise, what exactly, from a practical standpoint, would prevent you from doing so? No tape? It's not as if you've conjured up a light from where there was none or illuminated the entire setting with some "god_light_all" console command.
Sorry, but I won't be criticized for not playing the game "as it was designed" when the design in question is stupid, illogical and intentionally frustrating. When I spend $50 on a game I play it whatever goddamned way I want. If, however, you enjoy jumping though game designer's hoops like a trained seal, well then, more power to ya.Comment

How is Windows not Dieing? Every year their market share is being lost to Mac and Linux. Yesterday a press release came out that said Microsoft will take out all of the revolutionary features of Windows Longhorn (such as the new cool WinFS) so that they can have it out by 2006. And all Longhorn will be is a nicer Windows XP. Microsoft's claims about Mac And Linux are the funniest things ive ever heared in my life.... it makes them seem pretty desparite. And Windows users may be able to take advantage of their 64 bit chips in 2006... but Mac and Linux users can take advantage of them right now.... see where im going?Comment

nicer meaning it will use 512mb of RAM, about 10GB hard disk space and require min. 2ghz cpu to work right? but perform roughly the same functions as windows 95.

couple to that a new version of ms office, which this time will come on 5 DVDs and create word documents of a minimum size of 500kb. but perform roughly the same functions as office 95.
ive seen it happen before, and it will happen again. predicting how much micro$ofts software will bloat in size is quite easy.Comment

Yep... my point exactly. on a 14GB hard drive i was able to install Gentoo linux 2004, Steam with CS and HL, Warcraft 3 TFT, ET, Quake3, NWN, UT2004 with RO mod, MOH:AA. and its a dated machine too (seeing that it has a 14GB hard drive) and all those games have half decent FPS

WOW.
I'm here bitching because my 120gig SATA is filling up...
Of course then there's the list of installed software:
Macromedia Studio MX (complete)
Adobe CS suite
Adobe Premier
Adobe After Effects 6.5 Pro
Office '03 Pro (complete install)
Money 2005 Pro
Business Plan Pro '05 Pro
Norton IS and SW 2004 Pro
and those are just the heavy hitters - there's still all the games...
Full Steam install
Splinter Cell 1 and 2
All Unreal games
Thief series
Silent Hill series
Doom 3
Far Cry
A crapload of Sierra abandonware...
All my websites, plus 3.5 gigs of music, 8 gigs of movies, blah blah blah only to fill up about 70 gigs of that drive.
But then - it's not just a gaming rig, it's also my business machine.Comment

And what is funny about that?
I run my web design business on that same machine - not to mention that I store much of my account information on there. I am also using it to design and plan for the indoor paintball field/store that I will be opening soon.
I work for a living - I can only afford to have one computer for everything. Glad you found that amusing.Comment

not at all :) dont take it the wrong way. most of the nerds that make up the CS community dont know what "work" is. so its very strange when someone breaks the stereotypical mould.

Ahhh Pharlap, but you can use that much hard disk space all too easily! Spend a few moments on KaZaA or whatever and you'll be well on your way. If I didn't have most of my stuff burned on CDs, my 200 and 40 gigers would already be stuffed to the max with need for far more room. Ahhh, the wonderful world of DivX. :)Comment

true, videos take up enourmous amounts. but hard disks nowadays are not as reliable as they used to be. they may be massive and super fast, but imagine if that 200gb disk died...oh dear..thats a lot of data. unless raided of course...
