So...you've never preordered a game before, then? Valve could just as easily held off the release of any finalized form of CS:S until HL2 came out. People like to whine about how short Valve came up with the current version of Source, but they don't see that they really are getting a free port of a great game in addition to a great new game.
Dude, when HL1 came out, ITS multiplayer had more than 2 models. I thought 50 bucks bought more than a halfassed RC and an unreleased game. As for us being grateful to Valve, that's just dumb. You think they did us a favor??? I can't remember the last time I paid $50 for someone to do me a favor (I know that kinda sets itself up for a sketchy comment).
Technically, CS:S isn't really even finalized. I mean, the gameplay is, but it's not like they're gonna say "fuck it, you only get 2 models you damn ingrates" and be done with it. Though, at this point, I wouldn't blame them.
Just be patient, and go watch the Red Sox break the curse.Comment

malloc has to do with memory allocation, it probably tries to allocate a block of memory but fails for some reason. But you're right, there could be corruption issues causing the bug to appear too. So redownloading the entire gcf and all the gamefiles and the files in the "counter-strike source" folder could help...
i fucking hate valve. this is the 2nd time i've gotten the C++ compiler mallocblock error. precondition assertion fail my fist up your ass, gabe.
EDIT: it's some error in the hl2 .gcf files. thanks a fucking lot.Comment

Exactly!
Thats not true. He (we) paid for a package (bronze/silver/gold). And that package contains HL2, CS:Source, HL:Source blah blah. So, CSS is not a free present for HL2 buyers. It's one of the things what we have paid for. So thats our very first right to whine about it. Noone forced Valve to release CSS when it's not ready. This is not our fault.
BTW, if whining is no good at all, how come whining about whining makes you cool? :)
And that would make this inbred the Fonz of the CS community!entRo wrote..
If your quite happy to get ripped off then fine, enjoy it and forget all the problems that people are finding. You've got to wonder about how many wicker baskets you had to weave in order to afford CS:S and then be happy with it.
Does anyone else find it funny that in the very next line he says..
You paid for a HL2 preorder, the CS:S was extra. Be thankful they gave it to you at all and didn't leave you with de_dust for two more months.
You said something stupid, and now I'm irritated. I want my comfort back, you jerk.
I on the other hand am not happy with the quality of the product and lack of sustainable and new content is a joke! Not to mention the many performance issues users are having, (I'm not just talking about your average Joe with Ge-Force 4) People actually upgraded or got completely high-end systems, and even the folk with very high spec machines are having problems. "So it's the servers you play on d00d!" if thats the case every server in Europe must be having problems..doubt it.
So until such time as a proper version is released I will be getting my cash back. YOUR the fool if all you can do is defend a flawed game which YOU paid for. Have another Ch33s3y P00f and go lie down. How you even manage to inhale and exhale without choking to death, eludes me.Erik Johnson wrote..
Thanks for the update.....
We're working on porting some more of the classic maps right now, currently de_prodigy is in the works. We'll be releasing this as quickly as they are completed.
We're also working on one original map, which will begin internal playtesting this week. This still means we have a fair amount of work to do on it.
We're also working on two updated player models.
Most of this is scheduled to be released in the December timeframe.

ha. hl2's physics just AREN'T as good. have you played Doom3? not as many objects are physics affected, which could be your problem. doom3's polygon based detection is 100% of the lag problem. there are mods out for D3 that add hitbox based detection, which drastically lowers the lag to the same level as CS:S. D3 DM was designed for 4 highly skilled and experienced players looking for a nub-free DM experience, which is why it's polygon based. stupid? yes.
Do some research before posting. Doom 3 is OpenGL, which Geforce is strong at. HL2 is Direct3D, where ATI shines and Geforce FX series just plain suck. Wonder why Valve had to scale the graphics to DX8 for Geforce FX series? Cause their performance in DX9 suck. Worse, I haven't seen good performance from FX cards on source even on DX8. It's not Valve's fault. It's the FX's problem.
While I agree there are some hitbox issues, I don't see the difference with Doom 3's lag. Doom 3 had to reduce max players to 4 just to compensate for lag. CS:S can go up to 32 players and it can still manage quite well on a good server. Guess what I'll pick.
And don't even start on physics. HL2 totally outclasses Doom 3, contrary to what you said. Don't judge the HL2 physics after shooting a couple of barrels and objects on CS:S.
Using the FX was a bad example on my part. however, some of the guys i play against at my office have 9800 Pros and the like. guess what? their cards get eaten alive too!
and yes it is valve's problem that they couldn't design a game engine that even began to match D3's quality and level of effects using D3D, a more advanced graphics library, and match D3's speed. HL2 is using less technology but is still slower. i rest my case.
now this isn't to say that i won't LOVE hl2 for atmosphere and gameplay

Ever tried testmap_boxstack?and yes it is valve's problem that they couldn't design a game engine that even began to match D3's quality and level of effects using D3D, a more advanced graphics library, and match D3's speed. HL2 is using less technology but is still slower. i rest my case.
Uh... the ignorance really shines here. If it were really so easy, you'd have seen it done by now. Frankly, the two games use of their engines (and the engines themselves) are so completely different that any comparison is completely and utterly moot.
DooM 3 has a unified lighting system with stencil shadowing and dynamic PPL. On the other hand, they have no radiosity calculations or anything of the sort, so there's a whole lot of darkness going around... But lots of 'pretty' (depending on your PoV) hard-edged shadows, besides.
On the other hand, the Source engine uses radiosity-based normal mapping with shadow maps (I believe this is the term, not so sure.) While they don't have the per-light accurate shadows of DooM 3, the Source engine has far, far superior lighting in every way... unless you're not looking for a realistic game.
For the record, API has almost nothing to do with how fast it runs.HL2's graphics are only better because the valve art team used higher res textures and higher poly models
No... the textures aren't much higher-res than DooM 3's. They simply use the texture space more effectively. For that matter, while polygon count obviously has something to do with it, it's not the end-all be-all of the game's appeal.Comment

No, you're basing HL2's physics off of CS: Source. I'm pretty sure the Source physics are dumbed down for bandwidth's sake. HL2 will be much better. And the lighting is better than D3, too, as D3 uses a much more direct lighting, such as a flashlight shining through a window. HL2's lighting is actually superior as it uses technology that actually renders radiance.

I bought Doom 3, it kicked ass. Wolfenstein 3D was waaaaay better though, and HL2 will beat both, and this applies to D3 more than W3D.Comment

Look over my post.. did I say anything at all about there being other multiplayer aspects of HL2? No. CS:S is not a bonus, but it's a bonus that you can have it NOW instead of when HL2 is RELEASED. You have CS:S EARLY, and that is a bonus. You paid for a preorder of a HL2 package through Steam, and Valve rewarded you by giving you CS:S early.. a bonus! Wow!
Funny, I heard a rumor that CS:S was the only multiplayer component for HL2?
Hehe it was even more funnier when I read an interview with Doug Lombardi, the part where he said there is no HL2 DM planned.
LOL that was a knee slapper. Whew, thank god that just a rumor
IN PLAIN ENGLISH: HEY BUDDY..CS:S IS THE ONLY COMPONENT TO HL2'S MULTIPLAYER. LOL A BONUS? ROFL..WHAT A TYPICAL FAN BOY.
Hope you had fun on the floor while you were rolling, idiot.ioCS,undertaker wrote..
Again, getting CS:S early is a bonus. If CS:S still sucks when HL2 is released, then you have every right to whine about it.. and you wont sound like a fucking moron.

No one forced Valve to release CS:S early, right. But no one forced you to buy it. Logic sucks, huh?Spliffmonkey wrote..
Did I defend the game once? Nope. It runs fine on my shitty comp but I rarely play it because I don't think it's all that fun, or even good. I realize many people are having technical problems with the game, and I don't blame anyone else but Valve. I think it'll be much improved by the time HL2 comes out, or very soon after.
If your quite happy to get ripped off then fine, enjoy it and forget all the problems that people are finding. You've got to wonder about how many wicker baskets you had to weave in order to afford CS:S and then be happy with it.

Thanks for the update.....
Too many people are treating the HL2 preorder packages as CS:S packages with other goodies. Valve didn't have to give any of us anything early, but they did, and people are still angry? What the fuck? Ungrateful idiots. Your game should be locked until it's released.Comment

it's my personal opinion that valve shouldn't release any more products, even as an early "bonus", until they're damn sure they're ready for it. CS:S "1.0" is just the beta with some new maps slapped together in it. It's NOT final at all. Even if it was a bonus, CS:S's release is an embarrassment to the community. It sickens me that a company like Valve, who made the BEST FPS GAME EVAR (HL1), would release an incomplete game like Source in a piss poor attempt to drum up online support for their Steam system, which DOESN'T WORK WORTH A F00K FOR DISTRIBUTING GAMES. (don't beleive me? myself and many others have had to reinstall steam numerous times to prevent corrupted files, and it's easy as hell to make hacked software like CS:S work with steam, updates and all. oh, btw, i personally know 5 people who are using hacked steam keys. can't wait till HL2 comes out and they get it for free too!!!) You know, valve really isn't all that great. They released one good game, HL, made a so-so remake of TF, then bought rights to a few good mods (DoD, CS), released some barely acceptable expansions for HL (I personally beat OpForce and Blue Shift together in the same 7 hours), ALL ON THE SAME SHITTY ENGINE. HL AND ALL ITS BRETHEREN ARE GLORIFIED MODS. AND THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN VALVE BECAME THE OMGAWESOME UBERFANTASTIC GOD OF GAME DEVELOPMENT. Too bad 4 year old bugs in CS still exist today. I mean for God's sake, how the hell hard is it to fix map exploits in the HL1 engine? They could have fixed skywalks and stuff in ALL of CS's maps in a single day. But no. I mean what the fuck are we paying these people $50 for incomplete software for?
EDIT: oh yea, i left out the part about how they left 3/4 of their unreleased flagship save-their-financial-asses product on a windows computer (wtf, learn to code in linux) with a hardline connection to the internet and were surprised when it got leaked.Comment
