Why don't you try and make the game instead? Why don't you learn to code in Linux instead? How about if you acually convert the game engine to Linux? ID didn't release it to Linux. They sent it to a company to port it. Stupid.

Yeah Doom 3 has the best graphics in the world, but I think it has one of the worst gameplays in the world. Which is where Valve comes into place. They take the incredible gameplay thay already had with Half-Life, give it a huge facelift with a great story and no repetitive gameplay (unlike Doom 3), and BAMM, it's no doubt the best game and definitly whoops Doom 3 by a land slide. Remember it's not always about the graphics, just look at all of the HL 2 reviews so far: 96%, 98%, 97%. I think you get the picture. It's not always about graphics.
no, valve is just slow. the HL2 engine is totally outclassed in speed and effects by the Doom3 engine. HL2's graphics are only better because the valve art team used higher res textures and higher poly models. HL2 does NOT have as good physics (i don't care what you say, D3 is just more realistic), does NOT have anywhere as good lighting, and when it comes to DX9 effects, the only thing I can see is water. which FarCry did without DX9 and massive frame lag. HL2's graphics aren't characteristic of the engine, they're characteristic of Valve's art department. HL2 would have been much suited to a release last year, before D3's omgawesome lighting and effects blew the Source engine out of the water.
AAAAND don't you even think about saying doom3 lags online. doom3 lags and has a 4 player cap because the multiplayer characters are very highpoly, and D3 DM uses 100% polygon based hit detection. no hitboxes, just polygons. i'm sure you can imagine the massive amount of server computation and therefore resulting lag. D3 is just better, period. I own d3 and run it at high-quality with an enhanced lighting patch with avg 60 fps on a GeForce 5700 Ultra (OC). Try doing that in CS:S. I get like 40 avg on source and 20 avg in water, with horrible input lag when it drops that low. what happened to the "extremely fast, totally scalable" engine valve touted?Comment

Man....people bitch and moan about Valve NOT releasing the damn game saying they want it now "ready or not...they can update it later".
So, they do and then the bitching is because they released and it's not ready.
Then the arguments start anew about whether one "paid for CS:S or is it a free bonus". Who gives a shit?
Personally, it's quite obvious to me that Valves been working their asses off the last few years creating a new engine (that is in high demand now from other gaming companies), HL2 and the #1 online shooting game in the world, CS.
Cut 'em some slack for fucks sake. Whatever your current gripe is, they are working on it. Or, they looked at your petty little gripe and weighed it against others opinions and worked on something more demanding of their time at the moment.
After looking at the reviews of HL2, it's obvious that was the baby they concentrated on first and foremost along with the engine to run it. Now, CS:S is demanding most of their attention....and history tells me they will have another multi-player hit on their hands when totally finished.
"But it's not like 1.6..blah blah blah hitboxes blah blah blah models" Hell yeah it's not! There is already a 1.6! Go play the damn thing and shut the fuck up!Comment

i can develop games, but it's not my area of expertise. i've participated in modding, but i code enterprise java all day as a job. you know, that thing your parents do for you so you can get money to buy your videogames. i do code in linux. the point i was trying to make was to develop the game code in linux, where it can be debugged and saved in a secure place. i said linux development, not develop for linux. idiot. i'm aware ID didn't release it to linux. however, ID did develop most of the game's hard coded shader classes and such on linux because it's just a better environment in which to code. now why do you think ID sent it to a company to port it? because they're ass rich, and they can do that. they spent time they would have used porting the game working on the expansion. now who's the idiot?

EDIT: btw, do you even know what the difference is in coding in linux vs windows? linux was designed with programming in mind. why do you think id coded so much of it using linux? and before you say they couldn't have because they had to port the game to linux, first go buy yourself an introductory programming book on C++ or something where you'll learn you can code on any platform and then compile it to a specific platform. gee, i wonder which platform the compiled it to? the reason they had to port it is that the language it was written in, probably C/C++, can do some things in windows it can't in linux, and vice versa. please bitch, learn before you speak.Comment

I don't even know what the hell you're arguing over anymore... Your argument has almost no relevance to the game itself.
Who the fuck cares if you can program? You've obviously never tried to code a great-performing game engine before -- and I sure as hell doubt you've ever had to code one with a full-fledged physics engine on the side.Comment

that's not the point. the point was to start with that valve is always slow. so slow, in fact, that it delayed what would have been an awesome engine a year to the point it's been overshadowed by D3 tech. which led to some guy saying i had no idea what i was talking about. which led to me giving yet more evidence i was right. which led to somebody misunderstanding my statement about C++ programming in linux. which lead to my last comment, which led to your equally off topic comment. i'm aware i can't code a whole engine. that's not the point. the point is valve is too slow for its own good and yes i do know what the fuck i'm talking about.Comment

I got 3/4 the way thru Doom3 and then got tired of it's tired "fight your way thru a corridor, BOO! a beastie! Kill it. Kill another or 3. Oh gee another dark corridor" BS that I just said "WTF am I doing?" and deleted it and went and had FUN with CS.
NONE of us know what Valve is going through with HL2. How the hell can you challenge them with the comment of "They are too slow" when not you, me or Adam's housecat know how involved the game is?
You are merely basing you're argument obviously that it is the engine that is taking so long when Valve's biggest strength is storyline/gameplay. That is probably where all of the time is going. For them to make the game, the engine had to be finished long ago.
Bet I don't get bored and delete HL2. Just a hunch.Comment

So stop buying their products. They don't owe you anything, and they're certainly not trying to finish the game with YOU in mind, of all people. When HL2 comes out, you'll probably spout off "where's the technology that allows Doom3 to render PITCH BLACK AREAS WHEN THERE ARE MULTIPLE LIGHTSOURCES IN THE ROOM?".
that's not the point. the point was to start with that valve is always slow.
You probably wont get it, but it amused me.Comment

yea i got it. and yea, there are a few places where the lighting is silly. it's not the engine's fault, it's the mapper. he set the light source as fully visible but the radius as something too low. der. still, does HL2 have dynamic film quality lighting and shadows and self shadowing? nope. HL2 makes like Unreal2 and uses the awesome low-processor usage of soft shadowing. whooptie freaking doo.
the point about valve being slow isn't me bitching about how they should hurry up for my sake. the point is they need to hurry up because they're kicking themselves in the ass by releasing old tech.Comment

Uhm... If you're doing nothing but bashing HL2 and CSS, why did you buy it? You can't say that you didn't know it'd be so bad. The CSS Beta lasted long enough for plenty of media to come out, you would've had the chance to say "omg that game suxxor" and never thought of it again.
As for you're complaint about CSS being to buggy and unfinished, it doesn't make sense. Are you saying all games should only be released when they're only 100% bug-free? Should all mods only be released in one version? Welcome to the glory of a thing called "patches". They allow users to have the product, and continually upgrade it, fixing problems and adding whatever content. As soon as they have a playable version of a game, it can be put into gamer's hands. I'd rather have a buggy (and being improved) game now, than wait however long it'll take to complete. And by your reasoning, as Valve is "slow", it would be a long time from now.
And what are you talking about where D3 physics are better? The physics in that game were... Boring. It was eye candy, nothing more. In HL2 physics is a part of the world. You can use it. Haven't you watched the Traptown bink? I don't care if the physics "aren't as good" as Doom 3, it how it's used that catches my attention.
Okay, I admit that technically the HL2 engine is not as strong graphics-wise as Doom 3, but... It still looks better. Although dynamic shadows are impressive, they don't look attractive. The D3 character models are look blocky and stiff.
Heh, has anyone noticed that the Doom 3 plot is the same as that of Half-Life 1? Just replace "Demons" with "Aliens" and "Hell" with "Xen" and you might see something simliar. I tried Doom, and got tired of it quickly. Linear gameplay is not my taste.
Okay, so maybe Valve is slow. I don't mind. Have you looked at the reviews HL2 has been getting? I think HL2 is going to be well worth the wait.D3 is just better, period.
Okay, go play Doom 3 and have fun. Why are you even here?

Well no-one forced you to play cs:s RC idiot. Tbh, if no-one on here doesn't like it, don't play it. Simple as ... I can't believe all this is over a bloody RC. It's not finished. If you feel you 'can't play it as it's so terrible' consider this. You must have bought at least bronze, which gives you HL2. Now can you honestly tell me you think you paid to much for HL2 on its own, taking CS:S out of the equation? Well if the answer is yes, why the f*ck did you buy it in the first place? Just stop whining and wait for November 16th.
So, CSS is not a free present for HL2 buyers. It's one of the things what we have paid for. So thats our very first right to whine about it. Noone forced Valve to release CSS when it's not ready. This is not our fault.Comment
