When the fuck is Valve going to learn how to SHUT UP?

Your shit is NOT ironclad. Hell, your email wasn't even slightly secure until recently. Your just asking for some fucked up shit to happen to you.

But it does make Valve's 'excuse time' more entertaining. You can bet your ass this intrusive Steam bullshit will bog and Valve will have to find SOMEBODY to blame. Why not? It bought them a full year from most of you by blaming hackers last time.

tbh, they couldnt get away with making steam p2p, its almost like stealing other peoples bandwidth to avoid having to buy their own bandwidth.

however, making gcf's etc. officially available via bit torrent is a good idea for people who want to do that though.

Here's the thing with using a BitTorrent-like approach: While people are downloading the game from Valve's content servers, they could also get other parts of the GCF from other people currently downloading the game that are closer to them. Enough people will be preloading the game at the same time that it won't require anyone to stay connected and "seed" the GCF like you would when using BitTorrent, because Valve's content servers will constantly be making it available. It would just initially speed things up for everyone while the number of people downloading is very high. When there are less people downloading it, the strain on Valve's content servers will be less, and thus it won't matter whether you can get some parts of it from other people.

EDIT: Of course, some people will object to having their bandwidth used to upload to others, and that's perfectly acceptable. The idea of releasing the GFC through fileshack or fileplanet so they could be distributed through BT is a good one though. People have already used BT to distribute the GFC for the CSS beta (which is, of course, useless until Wednesday, and will have to be updated anyway).

Bittorrent(BT) is just a protocol, a lot like HTTP and FTP. Why people would be whining about valves possible implementation of it annoys me. HTTP demands an HTTP server, BT demands a tracker. How are these any different?

Also the few of you mentioning your frequent use of BT for purposes not strictly legal - stop talking about this in public websites. Your business is your own especially on such a touchy subject.

Except that HTTP and FTP don't demand you provide your upload bandwidth to others.

I'm all for the P2P idea, but only for those that wish to participate in such a system.

If Valve decide to implement this, it should off by default.

Uploading shouldn't be a big deal if its only done while pre-loading or loading the game, as soon as its done recieving, uploading should stop...

You know what I think, I think Valve should just get their own damn bandwidth and not try to use mine. Steam is their idea, they need to support it, or make people go to the store and get the game on CD.

The way they should implement it in my opinion is to have the P2P component opt-out, but with the option to opt-out put in several prominent places, like the monitor, the preload status window, and the internet settings.

Then, anyone with P2P enabled is given priority access to the content servers (maybe a few content servers for people with P2P exclusivly) and the ability to download from anyone else.

That way, you don't have to use P2P, but it works a whole bunch better if you do, as an incentive to use it.

Bandwidth, WOW thats a new concept of not lagging everyone down when massive loads of happening. Finally my T1 internet is going to do something and run at its correct speed, not a lame 300K\sec on Steam Updates and other junk. But good job :-D I'll be looking forward to that. And haha expensive phone call... Hrmmm, lets see maybe around a good 100+ collars I'm guessing rofl!

I'd say that phone call would cost thousands, if not more, not $100.
