CAL will be 'Pay to Play'

In an exclusive interview with CS-Nation, CPL Owner and Founder Angel Munoz just confirmed that CAL, the Cyberathlete Amateur League, will be going to a pay to play format. The amount is unknown, although he did say it would be "something small like $5 a season." The full interview will be posted tonight on CS-Nation. Here is the relevant quote:

Angel Munoz: I'm telling this to CS-Nation because you guys have so much clout and a lot of your visitors are CAL participants, days are short of a free CAL. I mean, we are going to start charging for CAL, it's going to be a minimum amount of money, but that way we can re-invest it to major things. The gamers want all it invested into prizes. That's not fair. There are expenses to run CAL, and it's not fair to those admins who are working for free.



Even if it's just a token, even if it's just a little bit for CAL to be self-sufficient, to pay the admins who are working there, I know that they'd be happy if we told them "Hey, you get a couple hundred dollars for working there" — you know, it's better than nothing. So, when we're going to implement that we're not absolutely sure yet, it'll be very minimum, $5 a season or something like that, it's not going to be something where we just take advantage of them or something, but we want to capitalize cal so we can run better and bigger events, and that's what's going to happen.

$5 is nothing if it means a smoother league with hopefully more dedicated teams, less unprofessional teams, less forfeits, and maybe less cheaters

gg,cal said specifically on the forums for suggestions on if people would like this and that they wouldnt force people to pay to play. it would be a seperate league. nice lying.

The main effect having pay to play of ANY amount is that some people will be prevented from playing. Most will not, this is true, but some will. And those people, in the case of cs, are more likely to be younger players. Because I don't want to ramble for a full essay, essentially, this will discourage younger players and thus detriment the cs community as a whole, professionally and unprofessionally; and it will do nothing except encourage business practices to affect the computer gaming world, which have proven time and time again to do irreparable damage. meow.

exactly, it will give other free leagues a chance to shine, meanwhile making CAL the league for more serious gamers, or at worse it dies out, or they change back to the free format. It's really a win-win.
