i dont see anything different than what a windows "box" can do. You shut the server down for 1 hour..woopie.. that's so leet.
Yeah I know that... I'm not stupid... I'm saying there are stuff to block DoS and DDoS attacks on Linux aleast... My Linux box has scripts that if a DDoS or DoS attack happens, it will take down the services or what ever it hit or attacked, shutdown the server for 1 hour, then restart it's self, its also working with Wake On LAN, thats how I keep my server running a lot better now... But still DDOS, is gay...Comment

Actually, WON is shutting down because Sierra is shutting down.
Sierra is Shutting down because Viviendi Universal doesn't find it profitible. So Sierra is shutting down. Its getting desolved. Its getting lequified. WON is part of Sierra. HL isn't the only thing going away.
SOF also and other games that are supported by WON.
But those games aren't like HL.
HL is going to Steam. Valve's own authentication servers.
The Other WON games wont go anywhere else. There Multiplayer is going bye bye.Comment

Shame there isn't a problem with Steam. A majority of the Steam haters have some other programs in conflict with Steam, or something wrong with their computers.
Maybe if some of them knew basic computer upkeep and how to keep everything configured correctly they wouldn't have a problem.Comment

Funny that. See, other popular mods that VALVe aen't making money off are being put on Steam... The Speciaalists... Counter-Life... hell, there's even a Warhammer game that's been carted from WON to Steam. If they can get a geeky battle game onto Steam, you've got no excuse to try and use WON.

6 million Steam players each month. Go figure.

I'm on a 1.7Ghz Celeron, 128mb DDR Ram, and an on-board 32mb graphic card. I struggle to get 30FPS at 640x480 res and 16-bit colour depth. Yet I'd still rather have this then WON and an extra 5FPSwith the gay AWP changes.
Ahh, a homophobe... I should have known... let me see.. my psychic powers decude that... you're 14 years old... your favourite bands are Linkin Park and Tool... you hate your parents... even though they pay out for everything for you... and you call everyone who kills you in CS a 'fucking n00b whore bitch fag'. Am I right?Comment

I beg to differ, Patch day is a problem. In the UK from the time it is released there is usualy a time frame of anything from 30mins to 3hrs of downtime. Let loose the excuses of: "Go out etc etc", thats avoiding the point. Steam is a content delivery program. It's defeating the point if it cannot do it's job when pressure is applied. Pre-loading is a diffrent barrel of fish all together which is working rather well.

Personaly I think they should adopt the same idea in to patches (unless they are unforseen problems), let them pre-load over a few days (what is a day or two after all? We've waited 5 years for Half Life 2- we are good at waiting) so a majority has the patch and the server is not hit with thousands of people all at once downloading one patch bringing on the downtime.
Friends network is a problem: It's only up 50% of the time (worked out from my logins and attempts to connect). Though it shouldn't be in the top 5 of thing that need to be looked at. How about an totaly independent server away from the content servers to handle that load only?
Sorry about the length of this post but people saying Steam is bug/problem free rubs me up the wrong way.
Edit for those who are about to flame: In no way am I saying the idea of Steam it's self is bad idea, it seems the way things are deemed to go. But the implementation of a few ideas are quite awful.Comment

That's a problem with the UK content servers then. Speak to Valve about trying for more servers there, or speak to large sites/companies in the UK so that they can offer their services to Valve for more bandwidth. Most patches have not been large at all, and there should be no reason for your slowness unless you're all on dialup.

Friends isn't a Steam necessity though. You can do with that being down as there are countless other options you can use. Think of the Friends system as more of a "benefit" then a necessary part that you have to use in Steam. I don't understand that whole arguement about Friends. It's a bonus. If it goes down, so what, use something else.Sorry about the length of this post but people saying Steam is bug/problem free rubs me up the wrong way.
For a majority of the users there have been very few problems. The UK having crappy servers isn't a Steam problem/bug. And Friends isn't some core Steam feature that has to work else the rest of Steam doesn't.Comment

ill agree with you there spookie, to an extent. it would be a good idea to preload the updates/games when people are simply on to do other things on their own time. all six million (or whatever the number is) steam users wouldnt be online at once if the updates/games werent offered in one giant helping... ...although, if the preloading time(s) were also announced, who is to say 'steamers' wouldnt simply all want to preload at the same time? i spose thats beyond this subject for the time being. though, i wonder how well the CS:S pre-load will go, for example, since everyone and their mothers im sure want to get their hands on it right away (even if there isnt as large of a community compared to all steam useres).
