..Or just buy half-life. Download the steamcs installer. Use that Half Life Key and bam get it all. Cause I know that when I downloaded steam from somewhere. I don't remember where ther were multiple versions. A CS one, a DoD one, and a half-life one.

Edit::BTW my friends beta Half-life Cd key worked on steam and he got all the mods free.

So what...Just go buy blue shift or some other old HL type of cd from a store and download steam w/cs cache. Use that cdkey, and it's probably cheaper.

Exactly, I Know steam still has that version up in torrent form. Other wise Use a p2p network or search the net for a CScache version.

Edit. CS Nation has links to Steam CS Cache

              you don't need any cache-files!

the only thing you need is a key that unlocks cs (which is what those retail keys do)

I wonder if this is a result of contract obligations with publishers to not undercut them or if it's really just valve screwing the pooch. Doesn't seem to make much sense.
I was thinking the same thing. But Sierra and Vivendi are gone, so surely so is the contract and Valve can do what they like with the older games.

Legally speaking Valve has done nothing wrong.

In my humble opinion Valve should have offered the market value of all its current game on Steam with the exception of CZ. (USD$5?)

Steam is supposed to facilitate the sale of software, and by cutting out the middleman the prices are supposed to be dropped. Valve has disappointed me this time.

Well I suppose the bottom line is it's kind of a strange thing for Valve to be doing, it doesn't make a lot of sense to anyone here. But if that's what they want to do I suppose they can.

I can only hope that in the future Steam purchases begin to live up to their potential, and cost less than retail versions of the game. As was stated earlier, I thought the point of Steam was to cut out publishing fees so that Valve could either (a) charge less; or (b) charge full retail but keep all the money for themselves.

That last part makes them sound greedy, but I actually support that - they deserve the cash.

Yeah because the CS comes with a key, but once they stop stocking that copy of the hl+cs package then the only way will be steam.

Basically theyre phasing out free CS.

You don't need a CS key to get access to CS - you just need a regular old Half-Life key.

                                Actually, it is.
Again, we've confirmed with Valve that if you buy or have bought any of the numerous Half-Life titles in stores, you will absolutely receive Counter-Strike once you apply your CD-KEY to your Steam account.
