A product there trying to promote? You say that as if they are going to charge people to get this game, while there not (hopefully) It's going to be free along with hl2, a game which nearly everyone shall be getting anyway. Maybe you should try promoting products yourself since you act like the expert.
Ugh, somebody needs to stab some sense into Doug Lombardi (in a friendly way, of course). While these screens are interesting, for a new product you're trying to promote they're far from impressive. They don't even have anti-aliasing turned on! This is more what I'd expect from a 'Look how far the graphics have come since our early releases' informational thingy. I thought he'd have learned from HL2 that giving out too much info too early can cause a backlash, especially if what you're promising isn't ready or isn't up to modern standards. Nobody's impressed by screenshots showing that your four-year-old machine that's filled with dust can still play it, they're impressed by shots that show new and interesting aspects of the visual experience.
And the comments about the muzzle flash were dead on...the global light shadow should fade, and a shadow should be cast backwards from the player, because there's a dynamic light source in front of them.
About the muzzle flash, you need to remember this is a port of the original, not a complete remake of the game, or the next game (cs2) That sort of lighting effect I would presume take a lot of graphics power. Look what you play now, a circle for a shadow, and you complain about this?DeAceShooter wrote..
What he said ^
Why is everyone expecting CS:Source to be Counter-Strike 2? CS:S is just a Source engine port of the current Counter-Strike, and they just threw in some new stuff like physics and new shadows. It is just a port, and everyone expects it to be better than Half-Life 2 itself.
Just remember, this is the old CS with a minor facelift, and not a completely new game built from the ground up.
I like the look of the screenshots, and the video yesterday, after playing this outdated engine for five years, that so many still love, it deserves an update such as this. I also don't like the bad hunch, it's slightly more realistic than standing straight up, but it's over done. Other than that, it's not the looks, effects i am worrying about most (I am sure they will be great) but it's the game play and the feel that cs has, that no other game has been able to replicate.Comment

Agreed. It appears as if the player model is staring straight into the ground. I prefer the current stance.

Right, now lets get a few things straight shall we. You people that are saying the models are not looking that good are wrong. CS was never intended to be the ultimate realistic tactical shooter. If you want that you can go and buy Rainbow 6. There's nothing wrong with these models/skins. They may not be the most detailed and realistic but they do have a nice look to them. And if you saw them in the video they looked a whole lot better because you could actually see them moving. They way they move looks pretty cool, very smooth.
As for the deagle, there's nothing wrong with it if you ask me, some of you are saying it's a little bland but I think that'll do just fine. Some of you just have the totally wrong idea about the game. At the end of the day, this is a nice graphical improvement with new physics. Can't wait :)Comment

The impression I've gotten from the recent tide of interviews and media is that it'll also be available as a standalone product, sort of like they've done with the original CS. I could be wrong, but even if I am, it would also be a selling point of HL2. And things like anti-aliasing are pretty basic. You want your screenshots to look as good as possible in the realistic confines of the engine, because graphics are a fair portion of any game, and especially CS:S, which seems to be pushed as an update to CS with a real physics system and improved graphics.

Err, so how is this not a complete remake? It's running on a completely different engine (custom-coded DX9 vs heavily modified Quake engine), the levels have different textures, lighting, and much more detail, all the models have been redone (or, judging by the screenies, are in the process of being redone), and while it comes free with HL2, it won't be compatible with the original. The only 'ported' aspect is the gameplay, and even that has had some changes applied (namely, physics). And the muzzle flash would be a single dynamic light...Far Cry can handle half a dozen easily, UT2004 uses them for all the weapons and weapon fire, and Doom 3 will run exclusively on them, so hopefully Source can handle one. And, if this is supposed to be a major update to a game, something that I have to pay Valve for one way or another, I'm certainly within my rights to offer my opinion about it.Comment

Yikes, didn't think i was attacking your rights! It is all opinions here, espicially considering we are judging a unreleased game, from a few screenshots. I can see how you mean with the lighting, that you would expect hl2 to have it, so then CS:S should have the same as its been ported to the same engine. I havn't seen any examples of this being in hl2 either, so maybe its something we will have to do without. Either way i am not going to let something like that make me think differently about the game, im sure theres enough nifty bits within the game to make up for it.Comment

wow, I'm surprised at the backlash the pics have received. They look very nice all things considered(just an update not CS2). We do remember what CS looks like?

come on people .... models can be changed alot quicker than some aspects ..... look at the original models of cs guns ... have they changed over the years ??? no and why??? it is the communities responsiblility to change simple aspects of the game such as astetic qualities ... contrary to hitbox size and what not
expect ALOT of skinning to come of this and i for one am glad of that....
also, for those of you complaining about the muzzle flash ... you will love it in the dark maps .... i think it may be their way of compensating for more dynamic lighting ... dont get me started on the other dynamic lighting issue ... i think you naysayers either should get over it and wait for release (instead of naming games that are already RELEASED which have said lighting) or shut your mouths and not play the game ... i could bitch about a hundred things in farcry that i despised but i find no reason for it (granted this is a forum of discussion so whatever)
oh and for you people who are whining about the "crouched running" of the terrorists and what not .... watch a game of paintball, watch a show on SWAT tactics on discovery channel, shoot a bb gun over some1's head and see how they instinctively move ... my point being it IS more realistic and those of you who dont see that dont realize that dramatic positioning of the body DO occur in nature ... hence what people call ragdoll physics .... watch one of those F*cked up video's of people getting kicked down bleachers or kicked by a horse and you can see ... that some1 has little control over their body when in that kind of a situation .... most games ARE actually realistic ... its just most people dont realize how realistic life actually is .. these ct's and t's are trying as hard as they can to aim a gun for their life's sake WHILE dodging bullets ... and i think they have achieved this allusion perfectly so blah!Comment

yeh on the aztec screenshot they look very weird, almost like a giant hunchbacked (talking about the CT on the left), and on screenshot 2 the T guy has a stupid looking head + he holds the AK as a player would hold a machine-gun in cs 1.6 (like no aiming)
Is it just me, or do the player models in CS Source look a bit... Fat?Comment
