i believe racism is a big problem in cs, but unfortunately not much can be done about it. as was written in the article, many of those who make usage of racist terms are either young and immature or just plain ignorant.

the main reason though is probably that cs is a no risk environment to say pretty much anything you want, we can all agree noone will(can) do anything to you for what you say when you're playing on a server 1000 kilometers away from you.

those same 'racists' provided with an adequate education and public setting would never dare saying the same kinds of comments.

It's probably just you. If you use the history thing and look at all my past posts, I have a tendency to ramble. I'm like that everywhere I go. I have a tendency to speak my mind, as well as doing so clearly and (probably) wordy, so I can do so correctly, and not have any miscommunication on my part.

Also, I've noticed your posts, while always well constructed, are getting longer as well. Perhaps you're copying me? ^_^

Back on topic, I 100% agree with the idea that 'letting it slide' is almost equally as bad as being an accomplice. Just look at any 'good samaritan' laws.

Ahhh... There is so much more than being called a "joke" .. It boils down to that most of the CS Community is American based. America still a young nation, and most of us that are 13-22 (majority CS gamer age range) Are either 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Generation to this country.

Our country is a Melting Pot . I read over this unknown authors article and found flaws. Its so vague to say "OMG I hate when I play CS and someone says N*gger" — There is so much depth to it than that.

As a society if we truly want equality and change we wouldn't allow kids to become suspended for calling someone a discriminating word while they're calling them "stupid white boy"

I was on a server last night and I thought it was funny and pretty hypotcritical at the same time. Reaper151-50 said after he died: "Damn jews." Then AznThug-xxX says: "Fucking white boy, no racism or you'll be banned." I tried to explain to him that what he just said was raciest also and I don't think he understood .

Bottom line is we can't have this double standard, I think that a lot of racism that does come from White American's derives from the fact that everyone else under the sun can call them whatever racial word they want but if you slightly hint towards their race you're a horrible person.

We have to demand equality from all sides, we can't have Trent Lott going on BET (Black Entertainment Television) explaining he does not support racial segregation while he is on a clearly PRO Segregation channel BET (Black Entertainment Telivision)

        It's a good topic nonetheless...

racist jokes are very funny. and amuse me for hours on end.

without racism, there wouldnt be any racist jokes.

theres no such thing as equality, a jew views the world differently from a black, as does a chinese person compared to a white person. therefore we should treat each race differently.

everyone is different, and we should treat different people just that. differently.

Pharlap: Its not necessarily the Race that's different. Its the culture that divides us.

Good point though, but stick to making hacks.. You're not much of a theologian.

Jews, "Azns", blacks, whites... Technically, they're not even seperate races, merely different ethnic groups. Growing up on a certain part of a continent, in a different hemisphere, with a different culture... That is what divides us.

Frankly, when someone calls someone by a "racist" term, I ask them: "How is "<insert term here>" an insult?" And they promptly reply with some rather hilarious[ly stupid] stereotype. I'm sure you're all familiar with this now. Yeah, saying that you ARE <insert insult here> tends to mess them up a little. Honestly, the first time I did that, I laughed. It's hilarious.

It's not even limited to CS, either. You see total newbie hate in Gunbound, for instance. Or WC3. Or, really, any game with any sort of learning curve at all. It's sad, stupid, and completely counter-productive. You'd think it'd kill them to try and help make them into NON-newbies. (Sometimes I think it probably would.)

Funny thing is, I don't see this in certain games like, say, Diablo 2. People are (generally) friendlier to newbies in that environment than... well, actually, it kinda was the friendliest I've seen yet. But then, it's a pretty simple game....

                *ahem*

                Okay, I'll shutup now....

(Note: Ignore the SN, it's a year old.)

Diablo 2 is fairly friendly in comparison to CS, I suppose. But on it's own, it's still a lot less friendly than it could be.

Mostly because Diablo 2 has to do with trading, and you can play by yourself just as easily as with others. If you keep insulting people, you'll find that your trades won't happen as often or be in your favor.

Yeah, it's probably the trade system and the economy that helps Diablo 2 be friendly.

So basically you're saying that we should be "Nice shot Jim, want to buy me a G3/SG-1 with your spare cash?"

Wouldn't hurt. ^_^ Not to mention that Diablo 2 is mainly Player vs. Monster, where CS is purely Player vs. Player.

Well from my experience while I don't like racism, I don't see it as a greater problem then any other form of abuse. Whether you call a black man a nigger or an idiot, there both offensive - I don't think we should put any special emphasis on racism (at least in Australia and I presume America as well).

However from what I have read the rise of anti-semitism in Europe is something that is rather dire (common guys, remember Hitler?). But still as far as I know that still isn't *that* bad.

So yeah I certainly don't condone any form of discrimination - but I think we should avoid putting the spotlight on racism when we all know that the majority of the people making these comments are immature and will hopefully grow out of it.

hey, i also think its a federal offence for harrasment, and ive seen some servers have a disclaimer on the MOTD about racism and harrasment

k racism is about being scared:

british people got scared and shot some indians, made empire etc

americans got scared and shot some british and some indians and some west african slaves and some americans and some kuwaitis and some more americans and some more americans and then there was the gulf war where they were scared so they shot some people, then they shot some iranians, then they paid the iraqis to shoot them, but they got shot so america got scared again and then they shot the iraqis. then they bombed what was it.. kosovo and afghanistan and probably a few more countries that didnt have recognisable enough names to appear in the news etc etc etc.. see thats why they didnt want to get "officially" involved in the israel/palestine thingy cus tey thought people might catch on.. yeah. at least it fooled the americans.

and now they're scared again and so we're seeing a rise in people like george bush. scared people make stupid decisions, and a lot of the american public is both scared and stupid. no generalisations or anything, its a fact.

either that or they could just be scared of getting found out that they;re invading everywhere, so they just go invade more places so people forget about the others.

so.. now we have a bunch of all these middleeastern people who are scared because they've been fscked over countless times by the americans (hey come on, you americans love being number one, take note that it applies to consequences too).. and so now they're all being pissed off and blowing up like less than a hundredth of a percent of the population that've been killed by the americans over the last 10 years.

which pisses off the americans more. so they go bomb shit and blow up shit and generally revel in selfrighteousness.. ever seen anything in the american media that wasnt either in the guise of "america is the greatest" or "be scared, your toothbrush could be an iraqi/afghan/palestine()/choose_flavour_of_the_month spy".

yeah, and some other countries kinda got involved in it all and got bored and fscked off to neutrality. i mean look at spain, they voted against military action; their president kissed up to georgie, they got bombed, president got kicked out. k, now its the worst terrorist act in europe ever. how come america doesnt really say anything about it, and yet we have to put up with all of americas shit in our news, even though that's completely selfinflicted because of american greed and backstabbing throughout the ages. yeah. i mean, the americans were probably the ones who told the spanish that it was eta who did the attack, it takes the blame from alquaida and thus the whole spain-involved-in-war angle, and thus do the whole blame-shifty thing that seems so popular in politics these days

anyway, illustrates racism etc. its only a problem if youre scared of it; banning racism makes it more extremist; positive discrimination to counter it just makes it seem like the racists are right. if people weren't so uptight we wouldnt have this problem.

(yeah drifted slightly off topic, but its all valid and about racism, and besides its just an attempt to be more american! bit of lexical carpetbombing rather than just being nice. just wanted to illustrate that racism is inbuilt in this "free" society that we call the west (or america, as it likes to take all the credit so much) )

to the usual critics: yeah britain is bad, yeah they did the same kind of shit, doesnt make it right for the americans to do it, and keep doing it and when you get accused just shift the blame on the british so that people forget the americans are still doing it.

well that was a good waste of 5mins, now you all go flame me and pretend like its not true.
