Thing is, racism is a bad thing. However, there ARE certain minority groups (over here in the Netherlands, that is) that immediately start whining about being treated unfairly because of race issues when they get their asses kicked for something you'd kick anyone's ass for.



Example: we banned a bloke from our server, who subsequently posted at the forum that he was convinced we banned him because he was a muslim. As you well know, it's very easy to spot from the way someone's reloading that he's a muslim. Same with the way Jews switch weapons, and whites pull out their knives.



Needless to say mockery was what he got.



What I'm trying to point out is, that during a game of CS, you have no way whatsoever to tell what race/color/religion the guy you're shooting at is, UNLESS he himself gives statements that indicate he wants to be seen as a member of one group or another. Which is a good idea IRL, but irrelevant and pointless during a game of CS.

That's all true, but people will still call you hateful names for no real reasons, just because they think it to be okay or right. But it's not right, it may have been okay HUNDREDS of years ago, but it doesn't work in this day and age. We live in a pretty diverse society and need to respect one another for their relgion, race, or sexual preference. Even calling someone 'gay' or 'fag' is still dumb, it's pointless. It gets you nowhere and keeping a hateful additude will not ever help you in life.

I was playing CS the other day, and the Terrorist team was owning the CT team. One of the guys on the CT team was apparently mad that he was losing, and he kept on using the word 'jew', as shown in the log I have from my console:

gender, race, relgion... you name it and someone in cs will insult you about it. at the end of the day its just a nameless, faceless moron talking shit and trying to provoke a reaction. there may or not be a significant number of hardened racists playing cs, but most of the distasteful "banter" that occurs is just that; banter. anyone who feels threatened by it needs to take a step back, contemplate who is saying these things, and just think: "Pff. I'm better than you."

Any time someone insults someone with a racist remark, I respond with a random Seinfeld quote. Sometimes this confuses them enough to stop.

your reaction to the comments does not heal the problem, it only adds fuel to the fire, if you think what he said is ignorant, i believe he isnt. to ignore it is the most logical thing to do. the problems as well are the ppl who LIVE the stereotype. why, because for some reason or another they are seen the most by the ppl who act this way, but all in all, who are we to care for what they say, either way their opinion is as valid as ours because its a downright opinion. let ppl believe in what they believe. you cant and wont change these ppl, you can only change yourself. i personally ( i stress the I, im not speaking for any of oyu here) DO NOT care for anyone i do not know. and if thats a problem, then that is yours, not mine. so when i see racism, i shrug it off, cuz its not at me, and its not bothering me, and since i dont feel affected i feel fine.



my opinon on why so many ppl use these words btw, is because "gay" and "faggot" has lost its "extremism". ppl are always trying to find a way to go to the next "extreme" to insult someone.



and from what i heard concerning the cops comment, from black friend of mine, black cops are usually hated because they are the betrayers.



there seems to be some paranoia among minorities a lot of the times. some of them think someones after them, or so they act like its so. one of my "wardrobes" as you may call it, is similar to a neo nazis get up, but im not a right wing high school drop out shite, im just a nationalist wearing clothes that im comfortable in, and i get fucking dirt looks from ppl, obviously thats "normal" but its part of the paranoia. ( and i dont mean from evryone, obviously everyone is gonna look at me as the odd man out, but with differnt looks). i also knew a guy who got wrongfully accused of being right wing by some black guy.



now i await comments such as "youre an idiot" or "your ingorant" so be it. thats when im gonna not come back, and frankly you wont care, but thats not my concern.

instead of worrying about racism, I believe we need to think of a much larger problem on CS; n00bism. N00bs of all creeds are perpetually being persecuted, slandered and belittled by other members of the CS community. Some n00bs are even kicked from servers simply for running around and staring at the ground! These repeated insults can only be detrimental to their 12 year old psyche, discouraging them from persevering and improving their skills. If they give up, they will remain a n00b forever, doomed to eternally sand in random corners of the map, staring at a wall!



Instead, become a positive influence in their lives. Encourage them with positive commments such as 'gg', 'nt' and 'n1, you got a kill!!!' You could even choose to take them under your wing and become their mentor. You could teach them useful skills like actually following the team, firing at the enemy instead of teammates and actually moving while shooting. Think of the sense of satisfaction you will both attain when he actually hits something other than a wall!



So please, the next time you feel the urge to yell "OMFG u f4g n00b!!1", remember... you were new to the game once too.

I have to say that people forget that racism is two way, and 'people of colour' a so called pollitically correct term, means everyone, not just browns blacks and yellows. Whites a colour too.



What i find is that the education level of your average cs racist is pretty damn low.



Someone will ue a racist term, and i shall say OI thats not called for Im, <Insert explextive here>" This follows usually by a little silence and then a chorus of reluctant " yeh man stfu" from his server buddies who in normal times, would be fine to let it pass, but it suddenly seems bad to them because its being done in front of "one of them"

Doesnt matter if yoru gay, disabled, short tall or fat, people will take the piss. To some extent stereotyping/generalisation allows humanity to communicate effectivley without writing a university thesis on a subject.



The problem in counterstrike is that many young peopel dont have the capacity to approach such views with any rationality they just act bigoted and use racist terminology in a malicious manner. In order to raise their 'macho' level whilst kicking some ass.



I prefer to use anglo-saxon swear words, at the end its all expleting for lack of vocabulary.



Perhaps if people find it very stressful they can configure the amx word detection to include racist terminology thus solving the problem.



Its not easy dealing with racism, I come form mixed parentage so I have experienced it from both sides of the fence. Playing online gives an anonymity that is just a consequence of the game, nto the object. I for one would love it if there was a pro that would take someones picture that was skinned, and then texturize, skin whatever u do, the face on to your model, so we can see the person we are killing, then we could really victimize the foureyed fat spotty geeks.... (:P) lol

Anyway, a few people have said "we should all just ignore it" or similar themes. That brought another quote to mind, this time from Edmund Burke:

"...the only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing."

Throughout my life, I've been firmly convicted that if you know to do right, and don't do it, then you're guilty of whatever comes as a result of your inaction. So saying nothing and tolerating racism doesn't seem like the right move, as silence is acceptance. At the same time, however, it certainly doesn't help to get into some stupid cussing / insult slinging contest. If you're a server admin, warn or ban the player, otherwise just express disapproval and move on. Admittedly, I'll TK players for certain offenses, heh, but that's not necessarily making things better. :)



Ghengis, that was terrible, lol, but rather amusing. Zorba had a good point about the newbie persecution, which I'd say is far more extreme in CS than racism is, typically. I have several friends who I've gotten into CS, and it's been really hard for them to get broken into online play, because it's such an unfriendly place for a beginner.



Let's face it: those of us who have been playing for quite a while will kill a new player long before they have a chance to figure out where the bullets are even coming from, so they don't get much play time to practice in. The limited time they do have, they get persecuted for going the wrong way with the bomb, accidental FF, retreating from fire and thus blocking us as we rush, etc. In my experience, new players get far more persecution from the rest of the players than people get persecuted with any sort of racist remarks.



That's not to say racism isn't serious. I play on local servers though, so I don't see much racism when I play, as Oregon isn't exactly the most racist state in the USA. Whever I play with friends from other parts of the country, though (especially the more south you get, unfortunately), there's a greater chance of seeing some random ineducated jerk who can't express his frustration without using ethnic slurs.



Anyway, it's good to see that the vast majority of you guys have a pretty mature, realistic view of the problem, and don't encourage it. On a side note, is it just me, or is Thortok2000 starting to copy my manifesto style of posting?
