    Amendment II

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

A well regulated militia is not some child with a gun or some country dad. :/

It also says the right of "the people", not just the right of the militia body itself.

The 2nd amendment has pretty much been violated in every respect. Not just because of gun control stuff...but becase the goverment took absolute control of the states militias in early 1900s (not exactly what i'd call 'regulation')

If you would like to prove me wrong on the purpose of the 2nd amendment, then show me a list of all the federal/state laws that were passed during the late 1700s/early 1800s (that were based off the constituion) that banned the generel public from owning firearms. (and also a list of all the mass weapon seizers/criminal prosecutions that happened afterwards) There should be a plethera of them...if the intended purpose was to only allow organized militia's to own firearms

The comma after the right of the people to keep and bear arms suggest that these are all separate clauses, identifying that both the people and well-regulated militias enjoy the right to bear arms, not one or the other.

At least, that's how the Supreme Court sees it. Since it's their job to interpret the Constitution, therein all the powers lie.

Not really. Their job is to abide by and enforce the constituion, not make up their own laws by twisting the facts to fit their own personel ideas/beliefs.

If there was a part of the constitution that was in question...it was originally suppose to handled by congress. (since their elected officials = less chance of corruption)

The Second Amendment was written in an overpunctuated and fragmented fashion, but it's not too difficult to decipher in today's vernacular. Let me demonstrate:

Since a well-regulated militia is necessary for the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

Who is the militia? We the people comprise the militia, according to the Founding Fathers:

"The Militia is composed of free Citizens. There is therefore no Danger of their making use of their Power to the destruction of their own Rights, or suffering others to invade them." Samuel Adams

"It is asserted by the most respectable writers upon government, that a well regulated militia, composed of the yeomanry of the country, have ever been considered as the bulwark of a free people. Tyrants have never placed any confidence on a militia composed of freemen." John Dewitt

"A militia, when properly formed, are in fact the people themselves, and render regular troops in a great measure unnecessary. . ." Richard Henry Lee

"To preserve liberty, it is essential that the whole body of the people always possess arms, and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them." Richard Henry Lee

"No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." Thomas Jefferson

Notice how one of those I quoted advised that children be trained in the use of firearms? Some contemporary rabble rousers allege that FPSs like Counterstrike train kids to kill, and they do have a slight point since even our military's been using modified versions of Doom and Quake to train soldiers since 1995, but that serves only as supplemental instruction at most; even the most skilled CS fanatic fast-food eating fatboy would be useless out on the battlefield without any hands-on firearms training as well as the courage, resolve, and discipline instilled in him by a professional drill sergeant, not to mention the physical conditioning he would undergo in boot camp.

this is also the reason why the stereotypes of redneck, gun toting, overly 'patriotic', george-bush-supporting americans exist.

note the commas, and how they fragment a sentence that rings true both amalgamated and under scrutiny.

reads like poetry. that or porn.

I've been using PCs since I was three and I am still 10 stone. Violence is an everyday occurrence now, we are all numb to it and need a scapegoat to blame.

Perhaps you would be happier in a country WITHOUT a piece of Constitutional goodness that supports freedoms like those within the 2nd Amendment? A country like perhaps... CHINA?????

Hurry now, thanks to "terrorism", one way tickets to China are going fast! Take your last trip to "your" perfect society NOW! *sarcasm*

Given the choice between a socialist, freedom-destroying politician and a patriotic gun toting/supporting one, which do you think I am going to choose? *hint* It ain't the first one! As I have told people before, you don't like the idea of being a patriot of your own country, being proud of it and doing all you can to protecting it's freedoms? Thankfully for those of you whom this applies to, this is the land of the free so you are FREE TO GET THE HELL OUT OF IT IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, THANKS! Personally I and many other Americans who feel the same way have no use for ya!
