i would disagree that over 85% of the community are pubbers i would guess a figure closer to 45%KhAoS wrote..
I think people are more willing to watch other guns become more useful than changing of physics. People want more challenge, making it so 2 weapons don't make up the game brings them more challenge. Instead of thinking each round "Do I have enough for a M4?" people would be thinking "Ok, this is Prodigy, I need to use a closerange weapon, such as a MP5 if I want to do good."
If the M4/AK are nerfed expect a HUGE complaint from the CS community. Think no 1.3 nerfs+shield x 10 and you'll get an idea about the complaints that VALVe will hear.Comment

OF course there are more pubbers. It's just that it's easier to know if someone knows the ins and outs of CS if they've got verfifiable CAL experience. It pisses me off when newbs rant about how unfair the awp is on the steampowered forums and then it turns out they've only been playing for 3 weeks. I'm sure ALOT of pubbers Know CS just as well as a CAL player. But how is valve supposed to sort newb Pubber suggestions from experienced pubber suggestions? (i.e. "I've been playing for awhile and X sux"...Really? how does valve know you ur not just some immature nub?)Comment

CS needs balance, and that is part of the challenge that makes it fun. But what you'll find out when you try to balance one weapon at a time is that it doesn't work too well. You'll get things like underuseful or overpowerful auto snipers no matter what you do. What CS has needed to be done for a long time now is a complete rethinking of the weapons, and the game all together. Every weapon has to have a niche in the game that it is better at than all the other weapons. Otherwise everyone just buys the same two weapons over and over again.
For example:
Pistols should be very versatile, offering the quickest switch and reload times second only to the knife and accuracy that is least affected by movement and rapid fire, but low accuracy, range, and power.
Basically the more accurate, more powerful, longer range a weapon is, the more it's accuracy should be affected by movement and rapid fire and the slower it's switching and reload speed should be.
This works for everything except the shot guns, where I believe the spread should be affected rather than accuracy. The pump shotgun should offer the tighter spread with more pellets, and the spread becomes larger with each successive shot. Also, the knife should have a have jab and a stab. The jab should take 50% and stab would take 100% armor or not. Anyone who let's you get that close deserves a humilating death.Comment

Not everyone who plays in CAL knows CS well or is very experienced and you can't just ask CAL-I/M/IM because they represent an even smaller number of players.

What I think they should do with Steam is make a voting system on it and have multiple votes going at once. Then that lets everyone vote on an issue instead of just those who visit the forums.Comment

Dude, I don't want to have to re-learn the game every time valve "balances" the weapons. I used to be a jumping deagler in 1.3 (NERFED), I used to be a crazy sprayer in 1.5 (NERFED) I'm afraid of what's comin next. Now I won't be able to jump off of ladders to save my self in train because some guy suggests it's too difficult to lift his thumb off the spacebar before he hits the ladder.Comment

Yay, first post here.
Thortok, you're thinking about this game in the wrong way.
The excessive nerfing and movement restricting is what is causing people to dislike and stop playing this game. Instead of further diminishing the player's ability to kill with certain guns(who in their right mind would call the AK accurate in the first place? First shot maybe..), why not make those "unused" guns worth their price tag, as done with the autosnipeys.
On all the guns nobody uses (for good reason usually): Fix them up. the Glock was a start, and now its arguably better than the USP. Although it does confuse me how the Glock can get a 1 headshot kill on a helmeted player while the USP is stuck in ~50 dmg. The reason most of the "unused" pistols go unused, is well, they suck. Their recoil is nothing but random conefire, and I don't even think some of them are accurate even on the first shot, standing. How about less random conefire, more upward recoil like the USP? Just a suggestion.
On the regular crosshair: I suspect accuracy is based on a variable's value, which either increases when you shoot and decreases while not shooting, or the opposite. So get rid of the FPS-based expansion/contraction of the crosshair and base its size on this accuracy value. As many know, you cannot tell how accurate your shots will be by that crosshair, since it expands and contracts at based only on FPS. Fix that. You would be surprised how much of a difference that would make. Much more than an opaque radar in my opinion.
On the shield: get rid of it. Worst. Design. Choice. Ever. Right next to Steam (Sorry Valve, but if you can't get it working right by now, I'd just stop. We'd be on 1.8 if not for it. To be honest, were this a community of businessmen, Steam would be a joy. However, this community is made up of people ranging from pre-puberty to senior citizen, with an even wider range of backgrounds. Steam is not fun for people only know how to double-click on the Counter-Strike shortcut on their desktops.) So, either get rid of it or do what you had originally intended to do and leave a half foot to a foot uncovered by the feet.
To all of those screaming realism: go buy UT2003 (or wait for 2004, it should be out soon) and get Frag.Ops, SAS, Red Orchestra, or any of the other semi-realistic (or in RO's case, uber-realistic) games. All are still in their Alpha/Beta stage so don't expect anything fancy just yet, but they all show promise. Stop wasting your breath asking for things I hope will never see the light of day. CS was more fun when it was LESS realistic.Comment

What is this jumping off the ladder at train that you speak of?
In any case, change it so that a new jump command has to be issued, that a current depress doesn't push you off. Or something.
Like I said, if someone can argue a use for it, I'll listen, I just figure there's no reason to disconnect from a ladder except at the top or bottom of it. If you really wanted to, you could strafe off it, or perhaps hit the 'backwards' key while facing it. I dunno. I just thought jumping off ladders was pointless.
As far as the AK getting headshots at long range, no other non-scoped gun can do it as easily as the AK.
As far as not nerfing things, and just increasing the power of other things, that may be a sensible idea. To me, that's just another way of nerfing things.
However, the thing you'll have to understand is that when you increase the power of the weapons overall, the game becomes a simple matter of aiming and shooting, with reaction time governing all. A game of skill, in other words.
The number one reason I like to play CS is to out-think my enemy. If I predict that the majority of the CT team will go A, I suggest that our team go B. If there's too many, call for a retreat and go short A. Send the majority to pin the CT at A while having the bomb carrier and maybe two others go plant at B. You know, strategy.
In my opinion, a newbie with a brain should 'own' someone who only knows how to kill what's right in front of him and just goes randomly running around trying to find people to be in front of him. And obviously, a skilled person with a brain would be the top player of all.
It's the simple things like taking a good 50 seconds to circle around the map, making sure to walk up behind them, aiming for a headshot and missing (because of the weird hitboxes from behind or something, dunno, it's actually easier to get a headshot from the side than behind) and they turn around and pop a headshot on you in 0.012 seconds.
See, I personally excel at objectives. In a one-on-one game, I can normally do well as the 'offensive' team. The same when I'm the 'leader' of a cooperating team. I may not get the kills, but I usually can predict where the enemy is going to be and what he's going to be doing (I'm wrong sometimes of course). I'm great on a team (or so I would like to think). However, the only time I can line up the kills and get significantly above a 1:1 ratio is when there's nobody really skilled on the other team. I can't even line up a 1:1 ratio if my team is uncooperative, I simply can't frag without backup.
So, to me, the idea of CS is objectives, the idea that being out-thought can get you killed in the blink of an eye, to watch your back or have it covered by allies, etc. So, when I get an autosniper, and make sure that I am a very long distance from my enemy, I don't expect to die from a single bullet to the head from a gun without a scope.
As far as 'changing the accuracy' of the AK, I was referring to something similar to a shotgun. After 40, maybe 50 yards or so (something to be decided upon by VALVe or whatever), the AK simply can't get a headshot (it'll be a chest shot or a miss instead). You'll have to get closer (again, the element of strategy--how do you get closer to an autosniper who knows you're there? Use your brain and out-think him). Also, at a farther range (say 60-70), you do half damage if you hit at all. That kind of thing is what I would suggest to get rid of the AK long-distant headshot cheese.
I agree with the idea that each gun be powerful in certain circumstances. Perhaps have a gun that's good for accuracy while jumping (for coming from out of corners). Perhaps a gun that's good for ruining the accuracy of who you hit (so you can run up to them shooting and they can't hit you). A gun that's good at killing at a long distance when they don't know you're there (the scout). For long narrow corridors with no cover (like in italy-the awp). For large groups of people or in a spread-out area (the auto-sniper). Etc.
And in my opinion, the AK is good enough in close quarters that it does not need the 'bonus' of the long-distance one-bullet headshot.Comment

GUNS:
Last time I checked real bullets were still pretty lethal at 300 yards. The military has trained soldiers to be accurate with any weapon the fire for years. I had to earn my expert qualification with the M16 - and that's not point blank range. If your a capable shooter and know your gun, it's totally possible to accurately hit targets repeatedly at what would be considered very long ranges.
And for your comments regarding the AK's range and accuracy - tell that to my friend who has a Purple Heart after being hit by one in Iraq at long range.
GAME:
The changes you are asking for a little over the edge. Most people are asking for changes in weapons that have never been really effective - like the glock, auto-snipers, and the upcoming changes to the dualies. I do agree, however, that some changes do need to be made.
An effective, fair change for the sheild would be to disable it on de maps, but have it enabled on cs and as maps.
Frankly, if I can aim at someone's head and they are halfway across the map (dust2) and get a headshot - I deserve it.
CLANS:
Oh - the comments about percentages of pubbers vs pro. It's pretty simple: in 1.5 there were as many as 40,000 servers running at any given time, about 3,000-4,000 of which were private/clan servers (by clan I mean an active team in some league - not some 7 year old who decided that he's in "a clan") - you do the math. Using ASE it is very easy to see exactly how many servers/players are online.Comment

Here's a good reason to jump down a ladder. In train when you're a T, run up the stairs on your right and find that hole in the floor next to the stairs down on the other side. If I'm rushing or being chased I jump down the hole.... to avoid being dinged a bit of health I grab the ladder just long enough to kick off again. I use Rizzuh's jump-duck bind instead of regular jump and it still works fine.Comment
