The job isn't to catch the cheaters, there will always be cheaters no matter what. They want to stop cheating, so by telling us that VAC2 has been loaded they just stopped a weeks worth of cheating. It seems logical to me.
VAC2 is a completely different department they have over at VALvE so I do not have any information on that. You don't think they would try to sneek VAC2 and release it without telling us? I would think they would, to catch all the hackers off guard and send a clear message to the hacking community.
Not to mention, you can't sneak a whole security module past us. Someone is bound to find out if VAC2 has been uploaded. No secrets there.Comment

I know a lot of users of Garry's Mod couldn't create servers off of their own machines. I hadn't heard any other confirmed instances of it, but I would assume it would be for all mods in which the person wanted to make a non-dedicated server.

Updates to the Steam Client and the Source Engine have been released.

* Fixed a number of connection problems to the backend of VAC2 (Valve's anti-cheat technology for game servers). VAC2 currently only runs on servers in the beta group, but will be active for all servers very soon.
In other words their updating something THAT WAS ALREADY THERE !
All thats left is for them to flick the switch so to speak.
And maybe a few tweaks last minute changes / updates ?
