yeah i change mind and i think we should all stop bitching about this steam stuff. remember when 1.4 came out and we all bitched about that gay jumping? now we all got used to it and you dun see bitching no more. i think we should just be patient for awhile. they probably dun really have that many engineer's at vavle working at steam (probably only a team of about 2 dozen or so people) and it would be kinda hard for them to manage hundred's of thousand's of cs players all around the globe. and if you guys think bittorrent is fast, check this out (again):

Ok I feel the same as most of you towards STEAM's app. Im a CS Mapper and when I Installed the Final version of Steam. It took over ever HL app I had and changed them into a STEAM.exe. Which is frustrating when trying to test a compiled map and Steam doesnt want to open it.. So take a look at one of the individuals from Steam and look at what he had to say..

Yes, WON is still up. Feel free to ignore Steam and go play like you always have. I'm pretty sure WON will stay up until Steam is working satisfactorly.

The Steam problems boil down to three things.

          1. Content Servers

There are simply not enough of them. There should have been far more of them setup to support the initial public release to the entire net-enabled userbase. The last number I saw was over 200,000 accounts created. The solution? Add more. We are. We will be. You can count on it. 1Gbps of bandwidth is not enough. We know this.

          2. UI Response / Feedback

The server problems seem to compound, or at least expose, the problem the UI has, resulting in apparent freezes (of up to 15 minutes!). This wasn't apparent in the beta, with its limited userbase. In fact, as far as I know, the beta ended up being pretty good and pretty stable. By the end of it, it was running pretty damn well. So, UI problem, but it also goes back to the first problem.

          3. Information

I'm the first to admit, we've done a poor job of communicating. We're attempting to alleviate this. The SteamPowered.com site couldn't handle its own popularity, which is unfortunate. It being down cut off the most important sources of information - the News (which I reproduce here), the FAQ, and the forums. It's up again, mainly because we've converted it to high-usage-friendly flat HTML pages for the time being. The FAQ will be up shortly as well.

Steam is not an evil plan. In concept, it's an excellent plan. The worst problem right now is the lack of content servers which compounds all the other problems and builds up people's frustration to a breaking point.

To address a few points made so public by one of our favorite fan sites:

This technology discriminates 56k and ISDN Users, as they have to download the complete game (~500mb), which takes way too long.

Untrue. The Steam installer converts currently installed content into the cache. If there are problems with this, then that is a bug and it will be squashed.

As well, Valve forces all users to use Steam, because they are shutting down the WON Servers, which you need to play Half-Life online without Steam.

Yes. Instead of being forced to authenticate through WON, you'll be authenticating through Steam. Er... ok?

In my eyes this is complete insanity, as I paid Half Life and I don´t want to be forced to download it again....as well custom models and skins are endangered as nobody knows if it will be possible to install them again!

First part is addressed in point one. Second part has been publicly addressed already. (New content goes in the SteamApps\your@email.com\<game> folder.)

To address one other point - Steam does not contain Spyware. The technical details of what and why are included in the soon-to-be-posted FAQ.

Ok.. Now we know "They" being Steam and Valve weren't ready as they said they were.. So the best bet is to wait it out. Yes I know cs is like a Drug and most need their Fix.. But this is probably the best chance to catch up on things you havent finished.. Like Homework, Job Projects Etc ETC.. Until then play 1.5 since WON is still up

On a final note... I can't stress it enough... BittTorrent is your friend. Learn it. Use it. Love it.

Here's a link to the BitTorrent downloads. Use them and close Steam while you download, it will download much faster then through Steam.

I was under the impression that Steam was final and CS 1.6 was still beta. Was I misinformed?

Taken from the CS Nation home page:

"It is not yet decided--from what I gather--whether or not CS 1.6 final will be delivered over Steam or via traditional methods. This could have changed recently, however.

Anyway, the latest changelog update has been released for CS 1.6 BETA. This is the version we'll be playing as soon as the gold version of Steam is released for download."
