Today's Steam Thread

I very rarely post messages that are negative towards Valve or any producers of HL/CS games, but this Steam install has to be the single most buggy and disappointing software download I have had all year. My PC has been on for over 24 hours now supposedly downloading and updating Steam and CS. yet it pauses, stops working, locks up, causes critical errors in other programs, crashes, and the download rate is insignificant.



I would have been sure that with the true debacle that was the original Steam beta release, valve could have identified the issues that plagued that launch, and stopped it from happening this time. the overriding complaint of lack of bandwidth for the original beta seems to not even have been improved on. If anything it has been entirely IGNORED. A small handful of people have been able to play CS using the default 500k installer, and the rest of us have been suffering with at least 2 days of the above problems. Their response has not been to buy up as much bandwidth as Sierra's chequebook can manage, but to release a full install of CS....which basically includes everything that was in your Steam beta folder, and a hark back to the days of downloading original CS patches and updates. Something that defeats the main purpose of Steam entirely.



If they released Steam in time for everyone to download CZ and HL2 using it, then they should have been 99% SURE that everyone who wanted content on the day of release was able to get it. I shall be paying a visit to EB on the day of HL2's release, and I advise everyone else to do the same. Otherwise chances are many of us will have finished the game before the Steam users have even downloaded the obligatory intro movie

omg i started up steam and installed it and stuff buh when i lclick on a server or start up cs it jus stays at the window that says preparing to load game or somethign i cant get 1.6 to run

it's trying to connect...lol just let it sit there for the next day or two and you'll get on eventually. Oh yeah, make sure that in the cs game properties that you have "Always keep this game up to date" selected.

anyone get past 1.6 freezing up upon loading...I get past preparing to play all the way to the 1.6 background image but it just freezes...

Man i must say i was very lucky. Steam took only about an hour to be fully operational and everything. My TFC runs beautifully. Why am i playing TFC you ask? B/C THE GOD DAMN CS 1.6 FREEZES EVERYTIME AT VALIDATION!!!! Anyone else have this problem and more importantly a solution? And BTW Steam is a great idea, but it DESPERATELY needs more power.

Bit Torrent is a program that will connect to other people that are downloading the file and share the progess as everyone moves along. It's basically a peer-to-peer program that lets you get files which are in high demand. It should be perfect in this situation. Check the bit torrent page for more info (http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/index.html)



The more people who download the torrent, the faster it goes.

We can't flood the bittorrent servers, because there isn't really one. The more people downloading, the faster you download.

now that the Steam forums are down, i don't know where to report a bug. ;\



what i'm experiencing is...



when i'm dead, none of my keys work anymore, except escape / console. so basically, i cannot switch spectator modes, can't go from one person to another, can't talk or do ANYTHING! it's stuck on 1st person mode... it used to work fine 1st time i ran cs, but now it's broken. it's when i'm dead *as if* all my keys were unbound - they just won't work (but they're not unbound, really - it's a bug).



a few others were experiencing the same problem, but not a lot.



any ideas on how to fix it? i think it has something to do w/ my config or controls setup.



thanks. gets kinda annoying, especially when i'm stuck w/ spectating afks. :@

I would have to agree that the update thing is fundamentaly flawed. However, playing 1.6 through the steam beta was a pleasurable experience for me. My latency was about 5 times lower than with 1.5, which was incredibly laggy in comparison

and built in features proved very handy.

I tried to use the beta... but unsurprisingly it wouldn't work.

Going with FAF on this one. I've been working on installing Steam w/cahce on all three of my systems, and I've had nothing but lockups and program hangs. I even left them all running all night on the 'preparing to launch' prompt, and when I woke up, no change. Personally, am fed up with the updates, but it sucks now because I have to go and roll back my server so that I can at least play on that again while I wrestle with Steam.



I wish the BETA Steam was still up and running. At least that functioned properly.

I'm with FAF too, unknown soldier. Except that I've seen people say this before but steam is free. Vavle didn't have to put this out and you didn't have to download it. I do still see the point about having more bandwith if they are going to put out a major product.

yeah that was happening to me for a while, but now it just freezes up on verifying recources whenever i try to join a server
