Best summary of the situation so far, a few pages ago: "this is the life, chattin with other gamers while the GAME downloads, usually you chat in game, but noooooo, not with valves super duper download system, mwa ha ha ha ha"



Teh funniest: "hmmmm i seee 12,990,442 minutes to go..... hmmmm ok sure NOT!!!!"

Humm the "Updating CS" progress, if you can call it progress, bar is halfway full, now that I'm attempting it again after giving up yesterday, I wonder if I should bail out and get the bigger install file or stick with this? I'll prolly get that anyway at some point, but right now I worry that if I try to install it on an incomplete Steam-based 1.6 install it will fuck up something. :\



Final comments on the want-it-now 13-year-olds vs. Valve apologists debate: 1) The fact that Valve is giving us free stuff right now doesn't excuse them for causing annoyances to a large group of people 2) Valve has in any case made a metric shitload of money off of Counter-Strike 3) Valve plans to make a metric shitload of money using Steam 4) If Valve manages to drop the ball wrt the most successful online FPS just because they wanted to hastily implement a new kind of delivery system, well, that's just stupid.



Anyway, this whole thing should clear up in a few days, leaving only the basic criticisms of Steam standing, and we'll have to see how those turn out. But I sure as shit am NOT going to get HL2 through Steam.

O yea, forgot: to the person who said that he got 4 bits per second, it would have been faster for you to call Valve on the phone and have them dictate the bits to you for manual input in a hex editor.

Another thing, I don't get it how some people are, or pretend to be, amazed that others want to post a lot of comments about this - this is a huge development in the CS world so OF COURSE there's going to be a lot of discussion, duh. I say enjoy the excitement!

You don't need to have 1.6 right now. You can still use 1.5, and will be able to for weeks now.

i found this VERY interesting news @ RedPhive about CS1.6 here it is



We're working on putting together a tradional installer for release today

that should get things working for people. It's going to be a fiarly large

download, but once installed should make everything work much better.

finally i got some progress i got dod to work, and played 2 maps, then i tried cs i tried to join a server, then it stopped, now i cant get back into dod or cs ;(

I've got a new issue, I got CS and HL updated(actually clicked on the 'Keep these games updated automatically' or some such button in the Properties issue and went to bed). And I even managed to GASP! Get CS started. Unfortunately, it just sits there, hangs at the first splash screen and doesn't move..ever..then just goes unresponsive. Sort of annoying, ah well.



Update, I managed to get CS to load. Got as far as Validating Game Resources on trying to connect to a server, went non-responsive again and hasn't gotten past that damn splash screen since.

i started downloading the cs part of steam at 11pm b4 i went to sleep. I just woke up and its 7:26 but it's stuck at 121 minutes and 51 seconds

ok fine but my computer is doing nothing not a damn thing i tell you i have played cs for 4 years and even the updates that they used to have never had this many problems with it, does not makes sense, and to all those peeps who just want to kiss valves ass, this is just damn stupid i do understand all the peeps trying to get it, but the program it self has many flaws and that is just bs if going gold, so stop making excuses for valve they need to speak on there own but do they no, come on they took off there forums page at there site y would they do that unless they expected this. valve you know this is bs and yet you did it anyhow, and yes if i can help it i will not be trying to get shit through steam, and thx you have just wasted 3 days of mine for troubleshooting you software, well not no more when eric come out at tells us something i might try again, but fuk cs and steam and valve, this is the worst program i have ever seen to come outa beta. good job guys

Indeed but I was worried about the period of time after said few weeks... Updates are always chaotic but Steam is new, and it has the potential to fuck things up. Well hopefully it'll work out.
