In response to various posts about a particular error message that says "Steam servic is down or net connection is down" - this is probably due to th servers being flooded. Just calm down and wait a bit for the feeding frenzy to calm down.



For the problem of Steam suddenly not responding - just wait and be patient. As far as I can tell, this is due to Steam trying to establish a connection and having to retry a lot.



Finally, since Steam was designed as a discreetly streaming update system, it's not quite as ideal for the initial installation, in that downloads aren't that fast or instant. Patience. If you're stuck at the "Preparing to play CS" dialog box, just click cancel and go to the monitor section. Chances are that your updates are SLOOWLY streaming away. In the meantime, you won't be able to use any of your installed games. That's normal.



Mayhaps Valve could have explained this better, especially for the rabid fire-breathing "angry internet people", the impatient instant gratification 13-year old fanboys, and just plain fanboys (myself included), or provided an alternate "instant gratification" installation with a pre-downloaded Steam cache (they've done this now, according to PHL). Steam seems to work just fine, and while the servers were initially so clogged that I got the crappy SteamID in the 60k range, it's all good. Cheers VALVe... Just release some more HL2 media soon, eh?

any1 know why my cs for steam isnt starting up it just says preparing to play counter-strike ... .. . ... .. . ... .. . for about 15 minutes now, and i know its not updating cuz ive been checking the monittor and also the little steam updating icon isnt there (u know the one that's in the taskbar)

The best thing to do is to open/close steam until you get on a good download server to update counter-strike from. i was getting 10-40kb/s on nvidias server now im getting 400-800kb/s on fileplanets.

sorry phatt dude i dunno if shack has it but even if they do your stuck with a 5 hour wait..i have 10 mb d/l topspeed adsl but its a 2 1/2 hr dl for me oh and ghengis quit promoting this site shamelessly rze does a fine job of shameless promotion on his own besides i payed for this thing 5 times on accident but left em as donations you can just be quiet....besides the question arent answered on the forums pfft

mike mike go to...erm...fileplanet..and then find the d/l for the cache the link s on one of the news thingys then just d/l from fileplanet...casue then you can install all the updates like they used to be...for now until steam is phased in better...pfft they said it would be phased in...more like totaled into our gaming heads until it fixes itself like a bad car insurance claim (shameless geico ad) lol jk geico sux

well om i did dl the cached verson and now it should boot up cs but i dunt no why it aint (btw its still doing the preparing to play cs)



EDIT: yay my steam is actually updating now halleloojah i can hear it in my eares im going mad!
