Dear Valve,
Steam in concept, is a good idea, but as you can see in practice, it's a mess. Please please please revert back to the old patch style updating. Sure, there's alot of ppl hitting ur servers, but didn't you expect that? Should've learned from the 'first' Steam release! I can't imagine how CS 1.7 and beyond will be released, if it's Steam like (i.e. - how it is now), then I'm giving up CS.
56kers/LAN only players aren't very happy now. League players have to figure out new strats and tactics, that's coo, but I don't think you talked to them about what they would like to see. Also, no bots eh? What about non Valve mods?
Also, what was bad was the lack of communication to your audience. All you had to do was post a text page on your website saying "Steam will be available here soon." That's all. Then when released, post another text page with URLs to the download sites. Don't ever give a date/time and fail on that promise, that's the worst thing you can do to your customers. Also be prepared with a good FAQ to offset the rants that you see here.
Anyway, preparation is key to any successful program, unfortunately, I think you failed with this one.
