You say 1.6 will still be beta, but I am not so sure.

All 1.5 users will be forced to update as the HL engine is updated... or will CS 1.5 and CS 1.6b both be available seperately on Steam?

Oh and it will 'ship' ?

Dart id rather still have 1.6 as a beta. Much nicer with a smaller community and lack of noobs. Well at least ill temporarly own, since ive been playing 1.6b since steam was frist released.

And for the record, shieldings for pussies, famas sucks balls and the galils is all luck.

For the record, you should go back to school.

yeah, but my point is that the entire userbase will be forced into upgrading to a beta, that isn't going to be good! So:

                - There will either be 2 versions of CS, 1.5 final and 1.6

                - 1.6 will be final.

It also depends how Steam lays out the different mods.

Will each mod need a 400 meg cache and it's own HL system files etc.

I was the 52nd person to join the steam forums, this makes me big and clever.

Basically we have to wait and see as valve are being tightlipped again, so many unanswered questions!

Keep in mind that Steam does not mean Counter-Strike 1.6. CS 1.6 could still be ways off, but the content delivery program called Steam is nearing completion.
                        ...From...Steam BETA Nears End..."news for tuesday august 26th, 2003"

which means..even tho ur used to playin 1.6 on steam...you will now load up the "new" version of steam and 1.5 will be loaded on it...there will probably be an option to play 1.5 or test 1.6...just like how u choose to beta test 1.6 now or watch your HL2 movies...when u load steam right now....but we'll see

It just says Steam is going to be official. It doesn't say everyone is forced to get it yet or anything like that. You just can, and CS1.6b will still be an available game to play over Steam.

Most likely there'll be a HL update which includes Steam that everyone will end up having to get later, and at that point, the whole CS1.6 deal will go final, and a bunch of other mods will go online. I have to admit, though, I had expected CS1.6 to come out a bit earlier in light of the upcoming HL2 release...

You never know, though... theoretically the could force everyone to get Steam at this point, but oh well. What ever happened to all that news that CS1.6 would still be Steam-optional, and CS1.7 would be Steam-required? I kind of doubt everyone will have to get Steam anytime really soon, though.

                            - New version of Cobble reworked by David Johnston.

                            - Full Skin support in Steam.

                            - More detailed information regarding the cache file on your drive.

                            - Vastly more efficient use of disk space and bandwidth in Steam.

                            - New conversion wizard to make better use of existing content on your drive.

After this, we'll release an update to the entire user base that will convert them to Steam. Hopefully, the majority of the community will have converted before this. This will happen roughly two weeks from the time that the beta period of Steam has ended. Keep in mind, this does not mean we will be stopping or slowing development of Steam or our games that run upon them.
