I'd like to ask joolz exactly what his intention was in writing this letter. I mean, yes, he apparently has coding skills which proves him to be of intelligence in at least that department, but I found his letter rather simplistic and unrefined.



He's right about someone coming along and taking his place, cheating is everywhere, in everything humans do, but even he points out that it is time for him to focus on real life. It's a game, meant to be enjoyed, and regardless of his intentions behind his hacking, his life is obviously lacking something of true value and meaning. If hacking was that important to him, he would never give it up.

EULA's have yet to be proven in court.

Also technically, cheats are illegal under the DMCA (In the USA ONLY). Circumventing security measures makes them illegal to have, use, or create. The EULA makes them illegal to use. So in a way, it's doubly-illegal.

Circumventing encryption methods that would aid in the theft of copyrighted material is what the DMCA covers. And personally I don't think we need any other DMCA cases.

Guns cost money, aren't given away, require background checks, and have legitimate uses like security. Guns are also a neccessary part of modern society (security, police, army, etc.). I don't think cheats fall within any of these classifications.

I like how everybody bashes this guy without really knowing naything about him or what he did. He was one of the highest profile crackers. He advocated cheater-only pubs as sort of a variant of counter-strike, he worked (a little) with UA, he participated in the first Counter-Hack Mole game and I don't know what else. As long as the chalenge exists people will try to get around the CS anti-cheats. Some people are really good at it, like Joolz, and I think we need more of these people to help with anti-cheats, the same way that business hire 'former' hackers to test their security systems. Joolz doesn't deserve any respect for his programs, which ruined CS experiences for all of us, but he deserves some for even trying to help out the AC community. If we set an example of "once a hacker always a hacker" then there's no incentive for coders to come back from the dark side and tell us what they've learned.

Sorry you didn't get my point... You were talking about hurting a community, and its not the tools that hurts a community, neither the people who made the tools, but the people who uses them. Heck, you might say that he shouldn't have provided it in the first place. But cheating tools also have legitimate use such as an admin to see who's cheating.

Cheats in CS have been around since I started playing (Beta 5.0). The first cheats were lambert -1.01, who doesn't remember that or gl_zmax the first ever wall hack for Half-Life. Then there were all of these things where you could have big bars coming off the enemy and it allowed you to see when they were coming around walls. Eventually when they wouldn't allow people to alter models anymore, wall hacks came around. Who doesn't remember Chazz and all the rest. There were so many hackers before Joolz, he's not the first and not the last. Every hacker who has left HL has left their source behind, except Chazz did the best way of leaving which screwed over my friend's comp. He released a God Mode Hack which was actually a virus that would delete your whole computer, good stuff. Anyway, if Joolz was never a hack writer, there would have been someone else. So there's no reason to bash him to hell that he ruined CS with his hacks. CS has had hacks before 98% of the current CS community started to play.

If Valve had talked to me, if UA had trusted me, blah blah blah. He sure took the initiative there, didn't he? What, exactly, has he proved single-handedly? That VAC is half-assed and a 5 year-old engine based on 6 and 7 year-old engines is full of holes? Did anyone here NOT know that already? Seems to me that if he really wanted to accomplish something, he would've revolutionized anti-cheats instead of hopping on his dead steed and "proving" that current anti-cheats are primitive.
